1 Grade 5 Curriculum Reading Treasures, Houghton Mifflin McGraw Hill, 2007 This year we will concentrate on the following units and skills. These topics will be taught through whole group instruction and small group reading. Reading Comprehension Skills summarizing, inferring, understanding word meanings, identifying the main idea, cause and effect and drawing conclusions. Genres/Story Elements Novel Units Monthly Book Projects Religion We Believe, Saldier 2012 Call to Faith, Our Sunday Visitior 200 This year in Religion we will focus on the following topics. Fr. Mark McKercher will come in once a week to our classes to elaborate on each of these topics as well. Circle of Grace Rosary Church calendar Parts of mass Sacraments Benziger Family Life (this is taught at the end of the year with the help of the Creighton Nursing staff) An Archdiocesan assessment will be given over the Sacraments in the 2 nd semester Grammar Voyages, Loyola Press, 2011 The students will strengthen their grammar skills through many different lessons & hands-on activities in large and small groups. The students will continue learning the different parts of grammar which includes sentences; statements, questions, demands, compound and run-on sentences, and exclamations. The students will identify the different parts of speech which includes noun, pronoun, adjective, determiner, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. The students will continue using other parts of grammar including punctuation, prepositions, and other misc. skills Writing

2 This year the students will enhance their writing skills and abilities by using the Six Traits of Writing. During this writing time we will do large and small group discussions and learn more about the four different types of writing. Also, the students will be working on a poetry project. Throughout the year the students will also be working on a poetry project. Each month the students will be given a type of poem to write. They will write and illustrate this poem in their sketch book each month. Science The students will learn more about and use the Six Traits of Writing which includes, ideas, organization, fluency, voice, word choice, and conventions. The students will continue to use the writing process which includes prewriting, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing. The students will work on the four types of writing- descriptive, narrative, persuasive, and expository writing. The students will learn about and how to write different types of poems. Interactive Science, Pierson Prentice Hall, 2012 In 5 th grade, the students will be learning in a hands-on environment; which includes experiments and activities.. This textbook we are using includes an online part that we will be utilizing to further the student s knowledge in the Science topics we will cover this year. In May we will take a field trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo. There we will see a variety of animals and their habitats. The students will learn about the different human body systems. These include; Circulatory System, Respiratory System, Nervous System, and the Skeletal & Muscular Systems. The students will learn about the water cycle and how it works. The students will learn about forces and motion including gravity and energy. The students will learn about the ecosystems Social Studies United States History, Harcourt Horizons, 2010 Your students in Social Studies this year will learn about the history of the United States. The fifth grade students will engage and participate through small group discussion, class projects, and independent work. The students will learn about the different people and events that happened in the United States from the 1500 s to the 1960 s. Native Americans Explorers Colonies/American Revolution Civil War Vietnam War Civil Rights Movement Units

3 Vocabulary: Vocabulary Workshop, Sadlier-Oxford, 2011Students will receive vocabulary instruction with a new unit beginning every two weeks. Students will learn definitions, parts of speech, synonyms, and antonyms. Students will use vocabulary words properly in a sentence. Students will demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary words through tests which occur every two weeks. These words are different from their spelling list. Spelling: Treasures, Houghton Mifflin McGraw Hill, 2007 Students will learn weekly spelling patterns and concepts in accordance with our reading skills from Treasures, our Reading series. Students will receive a word list of approximately 25 words. Students also have an opportunity to be on a challenge list. (15 harder words) Students will be pre-tested over this list on Mondays. Students will complete various activities throughout the week to reinforce words. Students will take a final test on Fridays. Math: My Math, McGraw-Hill, 2014 Students will continue to build on math skills throughout the year. In 5 th grade math, we have a new math series this year, My Math by McGraw-Hill, I am excited to use this series to help your child reach his / her full potential in math. In order to meet individual needs, we will be pre-testing over each chapter and grouping the students. The groups will be changing every chapter throughout the year. This grouping will enable me to meet your child s specific needs in math. Students will usually have homework in math. It should not take more than minutes to complete assignments unless studying for a test. We will also take 1 or 2 quizzes and one test per chapter. These will be announced in advance so the students will have time to study and prepare.

4 Parents are asked not to over help their children with homework. The assignments are given to give the students practice in a skill. If a parent corrects and has the child fix mistakes before I see the work, I am not able to analyze the errors to better help the child. If you notice your child is struggling please don t hesitate to contact me at d.haack@stephen.org Continuing this year is a program called Fasttmath. It is required for your child to complete 3 Fasttmath lessons each week. The students will be able to work on Fasttmath each time they go to the computer lab here at school, which is twice a week. The third lesson will need to be completed at home. This expectation will be monitored and rewards and or consequences will be given based on completion. In 5 th grade, we also have an assessment: Party Time. Students will learn what skills are needed to plan a party. Our assessment will take place during the second semester. Please know that I will continue to share information with you throughout the school year. Students will learn the concepts of how to add/subtract/multiply/divide whole numbers & decimals Students will the concepts of place value through the millions. Students will learn customary units of measurement. Students will learn geometry, including polygons, triangle, and quadrilaterals. Students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. Assessment for fifth grade include: Teacher observation Class discussions Daily work

Checkmark charts/demerit card Individual classroom reward system 5 demerit=visit with Dr. Williby/Mr. Lebeda New demerit cards are issued each QUARTER Marble Jars to earn classroom rewards\ Homework is given to practice skills learned in class. If a student has a mission assignment they have 2 options: stay after school with the teacher of the class in which the assignment was missed until 3:45 OR receive a demerit. A deduction of 10% will be taken regardless of whether the child chooses to take the demerit or stay afterschool. Both options impact the earned free dress day. 5 th grade Syllabus
