3 Welcome to Pinpoint Math! Pinpoint Math is an intervention program that caters to individual student needs and gives you the technology to easily track student progress. Pinpoint Math has seven levels, A-G. Each level includes a Teacher s Edition and six student Volumes. Pinpoint Math provides the following features: Volume pretests to identify the Objective weaknesses for each student. Action Plans to address the Objectives students failed on their pretest. Progress Monitoring assessments for additional Objective practice. Volume posttests that measure student progress on Volume content. Group and student reports that track student progress and activity. Automatic scoring for all assessment completed online Scoring tool for students who complete assessments with a pencil and paper. 4 Logging In 1. Go to 2. Type your username and password in the provided fields. 3. Click Login and your homepage opens. a. If you forget your login details, click Forget your password?, type your address, and click Go. Your details are sent to you via . Group Builder On your initial login, click the Click here to setup your first Group link. Your Group Builder opens. Use the Group Builder to create student groups and to add students to your school and student groups. You cannot assign assessments or provide login information to your students without assigning them to a group. You can also click the Group Builder link in the top right corner of your screen at any time. 1. The Students in School list displays all registered Pinpoint Math students from your school. a. By default, the Level dropdown menu is set at All Levels. Select a level to specify the level of students you want to view on the Students in School list. Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 4 of 24

5 Creating Student Groups You cannot assign assessments to students unless they are assigned to one of your groups. To create a group: 1. Click the Add Group link beneath the Group dropdown menu. A popup box opens. 2. Type a Group Name and select a level for your group from the Level dropdown menu. Optionally, type a Description for your group. 3. Click Add Group. To close the popup window without adding a group, click Cancel. a. Create as many groups as you want. Your groups can include an entire class, or a group of students within your class. b. You can only assign a student to one group at a time. c. Although students can change groups, their data cannot. If you move a student to a new group, you must obtain new assessment data from the student. Edit a student group 1. Click Edit Group under the Group dropdown menu. An Edit Group popup opens. 2. Make your changes in the popup box and click Edit Group. Click Cancel to close the popup box without making/saving changes to your class profile. Delete a created group 1. Click Remove Group under the Group dropdown menu. 2. Click OK in the popup box. Click Cancel to close the popup box without deleting the group. *Note: Deleting a class is a permanent, irreversible action. Any students from the deleted group are moved to the Students in School list (refer to pages 6-7 for details about adding students). Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 5 of 24

6 Adding students to your school and groups To add a student from the Students in School list to one of your groups: 1. Select the name of the group you want to add the student to on the Group dropdown menu. 2. Click and drag a student s name from the Students in School box to the Student s in Group box. Use the scroll bar in your Students in School box to navigate up and down the list. *Note: Students highlighted in gray on your Students in School list are assigned to another class. You cannot alter their registered information or add them to your class. Click Show Available Only to remove students highlighted in gray from your view. To add a new student to the Students in School or Students in Group list: 1. If you are adding the student to a group, select the group you want to add the student to from the dropdown menu. 2. Click New Student and an Add Student popup box opens. 3. The student s first name, last name, and level are required. 4. To save and add student information to your school list, click Add to School Only. Click Add to Group & School to add the student to the group selected on your Group drop-down menu. *Note: The Add to Group & School button only appears if you selected a group from the dropdown menu on your Group Builder popup window. a. Click Cancel to close the popup without adding any students. b. Mouse over student names on the Students in School or Students in Group list to see a popup box with the student s name, grade, and class. c. A username and password is auto generated for students once you add them to Pinpoint Math. Use the Student Passwords section to edit or view a student s login details. 7 Edit Student Information 1. Double click a student s name in the Group Builder window and edit the appropriate student fields. 2. Click Edit Student. Click Cancel to close the popup box without making any changes. Remove a student from your group or school Click and drag their name from the Students in Group list to the Students in School list. To permanently remove a student from your school, contact Pinpoint Math Technology support at support@pinpointmath.com. To Close the Group Builder at anytime, click the red X in the top right corner. Homepage Pinpoint Math s homepage provides a quick overview of you and your student s recent activity such as: The number of assessments you ve assigned to your group. The results of your student s most recently completed assessments. Any assessments you need to complete scoring manually (this only applies to you if your students complete assessment offline with a paper and pencil. Pinpoint Math scores all assessments completed online automatically.) Along the top of your homepage screen is a Group dropdown menu and a Home, Group Builder, Student Passwords, Options, and Logout link. These links are global to all Pinpoint Math pages. 8 If you created multiple student groups, use the Group dropdown menu to select a different group at any time. Click an assessment s title in the Reporting box to view the Group Report page. Click an assessment title in the Scoring box to manually score an assessment. Click Home to return to the homepage at any time. Click Group Builder to add or edit student information and/or student groups (refer to page 4-8 for details). Click Student Passwords to access printable username and password cards for registered Pinpoint Math students, to change a student s password, or to log into a student s account (refer to page 8-9 for details). Click Options to edit your password, or to change the sort order of your student lists (refer to page 10 for details). Click Support to view the system requirements needed to run Pinpoint Math on your computer. Click Logout to safely end your Pinpoint Math session. Click Go within the Assessments, Scoring, or Reporting box to open and view the section in full detail. Once you open one of the three sections, click the tabs along the top of your page to open a different section. Student Passwords Click Student Passwords and a popup window opens: Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 8 of 24

9 Select a group and a student from the dropdown menus. By default, your first registered group is selected on the Group dropdown menu and Show All is selected on the Students dropdown menu. a. Click the Print Entire Login Cards button below the Group dropdown menu to print login cards for all students in your selected group. To print individual login cards, click the yellow card icon next to a student s name. A new window opens with the printable card(s). Click Print Student Login Cards to open your Print options popup box. Click Close Window to exit the printable cards window. b. Click the key icons next to student names to log into the student s account. Once you click the key icon, a popup box appears. Click OK to logout of your teacher account Click Cancel to stay logged into your teacher account while simultaneously logging into your student s account. c. Click Edit in a student s Reset row to change their password. The Edit button becomes a Save button and a password field box appears next to the password title. Type any alphanumeric combination in the provided password box. The password must be 3-8 characters long. Click Save. *Note: A student s username cannot be edited or changed. d. Click the right and left arrows below your student list to move forwards and backwards through your student password pages. e. Click Close Window to exit the student passwords popup window. 10 Options Click Options and a popup window appears with a Sort Order and Edit Password button. By default, the Sort Order button is selected and the sort order is set at Last Name, First Name, and the Show Middle Initial checkbox is selected. Sort Order Click the radio button next to the sort order you want for your student lists. Uncheck the Show Middle Initial box to remove middle initials from the names on your student lists. Click Save, or click Close Window to exit the popup without making/saving any changes. Edit Password Click the Edit Password button, type your Current and New password in the labeled field boxes: Click Change Password, or click Close Window to exit the Options popup window without making/saving any changes. 11 Assessments Use the assessments section to view and assign assessments. All Pinpoint Math Volumes include a pretest, posttest, and several Progress Monitoring assessments. Students cannot access assessments until you assign the assessments manually. 1. To open, click Go in the Assessment box on your homepage. From the Scoring or Reports page, click the Assessments tab. a. The Current Assignments list displays all assessments currently assigned to students in your selected group. Click the show assignment list link next to an assessment title to see the list of students currently assigned to the assessment. *Once students complete an assigned assessment, Pinpoint Math removes their name from the assignment list. 2. Beneath the Current Assessments list are two dropdown menus. Select a Volume and an Assessment Type from the labeled dropdown menus. A list populates with all of the assessments that fit your dropdown menu selections. a. Click the column labels on the blue heading of the list to rearrange the display order of your assessments. 12 3. Click assign in an assessment s row and a popup opens with assignment options. The Assign to entire group radio button is selected by default. a. If you click the Assign to radio button, all student names from your group are selected and highlighted in blue. If you click a student s name, all other student names become deselected. b. To re-select student names on the Assign to list, click and drag your mouse over the students you want to select, or hold down the Ctrl key and click specific student names. To de-select specific student names, hold down the Ctrl key and click the highlighted name(s) you want to de-select. Release the Ctrl key once you finish de-selecting and/or selecting names. c. Optionally, set a date range for your students to start and/or complete an assessment. Click the Set date range checkbox, and then click the calendar icons beneath the Start Date and End Date titles. Click the light blue arrows on the calendar to switch months and click the dark blue arrows to change the calendar year. Click the date you want to select on the calendar, and the calendar closes. Your selected date appears next to the calendar icon. Click the blue X in the right corner to close the calendar without selecting a date range. *Note: Students cannot access an assessment before or after a set date range. A red notice appears next to an expired assessment on the Current Assignments list. If a student does not complete an assessment within your assigned date range and you want to give them a zero for failing to complete the assessment, go to the Scoring page and manually score their assessment. 2. Click Save to assign the assessment to your selected group or students, or click Cancel to close the popup box without assigning anything. 3. Once you assign an assessment, the Assign button in the assessment s row becomes an Edit button. Click Edit to modify the list of students assigned to the assessment, the assessment s date range, or to remove the assignment. Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 12 of 24

13 a. Uncheck the Set date range checkbox to remove an assessment s date range. b. Click the Remove Assignment radio button to unassign students from an assessment. c. Click Save to keep your assignment modifications, or click Cancel to close the popup box without making/saving any changes. Once students complete a Volume pretest, Pinpoint Math generates an Action Plan that correlates to the objectives the student failed on their pretest. *Note: Although Pinpoint Math recommends you to assign Volume pretests before any other assessments within a Volume, and to assign a pretest only once and a posttest twice, students can take any assessment as many or as few times as you deem necessary. View Assessment Details 1. Click an assessment title on the Assessment list. A popup window opens with a Preview and Objectives tab. a. The Preview tab opens first by default and allows you to see all questions for the selected assessment. To print a copy of the selected assessment, click the Print button under the Preview tab. Your printing options popup box opens. Make your printing selections and click OK. b. Click the Objectives tab to view the list of objectives covered in the selected assessment. 2. 14 Reports and Action Plans Use the Reports to monitor or alter your student s assigned lessons and tutorials, and to view their assessment progress. Pinpoint Math uses the results of a student s Volume pretest to create Action Plans. To open the Reports section, click Go in the Reports box on your homepage. From the Assessments or Scoring page, click the Reports tab. If you registered multiple groups, use the Group dropdown menu to select a student group. Pinpoint Math provides three different reports and two action plans. The Group Report opens first by default. To open a different Report or Action Plan, click a Report or Action Plan s button along the right side of your screen. Group Report The Group Report displays an overview of your group s current assessment results: The Volume Overview displays your group s average score for the most recently completed assessment attempts within each Volume. The average scores do not necessarily include scores from all students assigned to the assessment. The average only includes scores from students in the group who completed the assessment. 15 to your Assessments page to review which students need to complete an assigned assessment. The Objectives Monitoring section lists the five top and bottom objective scores for all of the most recently completed Volume pretest and posttest attempts. a. Click the View All objectives link to view the complete list of objective scores. This link only appears if your students have covered more than ten objectives within their completed assessments. Click the Print Report button to open a printable version of the data on your screen. Student Report Click the Student Report button to see an overview of a specific student s assessment results: 1. Use the Select Student dropdown menu to select a student. *Note: If you do not see your student s name on the dropdown menu, make sure the group containing the student is selected on the group dropdown menu. a. The Volume Overview box shows the student s score for the most recent attempt of each completed assessment. b. The Objectives Monitoring lists the five top and bottom objective scores for all of their most recently completed Volume pretest and posttest attempts. Click the View all objectives link to see a complete list of their objective results. This link only appears if your students have covered more than ten objectives within their completed assessments. c. 16 Item Analysis Report Click the Item Analysis Report button to view student pretest and posttest results by objective scores: 1. Use the Select Student dropdown menu to select your student. *Note: If you do not see your student s name on the dropdown menu, make sure the group containing the student is selected on the group dropdown menu. 2. Select a Volume, Assessment, and Attempt from the dropdown menus. a. The percentage to the right of the Select Volume dropdown menu represents the student s average score for all of their most recently completed assessment attempts within the selected Volume. b. The percentage to the right of the Select Assessment dropdown menu represents the student s score for their most recent attempt on the selected assessment c. The percentage to the right of the Attempt dropdown menus represents the student s score for the selected assessment and attempt. 3. Click the Print Report button to open a printable version of the data on your screen. The Topic Objectives list below the dropdown menu divides the questions from the selected assessment into rows with their correlated objective. Each row displays the number of questions from the assessment that correlated to the objective, and the student s average score for the correlated question(s). 17 Group Action Plan Click the Group Action Plan button on the right side of the screen to see an overview of your group s assigned assessments and objectives. Pinpoint Math automatically assigns lessons and tutorials that correlate to the objectives students failed on their pretest. The Group Action Plan displays their assigned pretests, posttests, and objectives: 1. Select a Volume from the dropdown menu. The action plan displays a complete list of the students from your selected group and their assigned assessments and objectives. a. A blue dot in a student s pretest, posttest, or objective column denotes that the assessment or objective is assigned to the student. The blue dots disappear once students complete the assigned assessment or objective. b. Click Export to transfer the action plan s data to an excel spreadsheet. c. Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the action plan to view all assignments within a row. Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 17 of 24

18 Student Action Plan Click Student Action Plan on the right side of your screen to view and/or assign lessons and tutorials that correlate to your student s completed Volume pretests. Lesson and tutorial assignments vary and depend on each student s Volume pretest results. Students have automatic access to all lessons and tutorials that correlate to the objectives that were covered in their completed Volume pretests. 1. Select a student name and a Volume from the drop-down menus. a. The score next to the Select Volume dropdown menu represents the combined average of the student s most recently completed pretest and posttest scores for the selected Volume. b. There are three sections to the Student Action Plan: Lessons and Tutorials Assigned: Correlates to the objectives your selected student failed on the pretest. Lessons and Tutorial Completed: Lessons and Tutorials from the assigned list that your selected student completed. Lessons and Tutorials Optional for Review: Correlates to objectives your selected student passed on the pretest. Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 18 of 24

19 2. Click the arrow next to a Volume s title within any of the three sections to expand or collapse the Volume s list of correlated assignments. All objectives that your selected student missed are displayed beneath their correlated lesson and/or tutorials. a. When students open an assigned tutorial online, the tutorial automatically moves to the Completed list. Completed lessons and tutorials from the Optional list do not move to the Completed list. b. Each Lesson and Tutorial has an Assign and Completed checkbox. If your student completes a tutorial using the CD-ROM edition, you must click the Completed checkbox manually to move the title to the Completed list. Uncheck the Assign checkbox for a lesson or tutorial on the Assigned or Completed list to move the assignment to the Optional list. Uncheck the Completed checkbox for a lesson or tutorial on the Completed list to move the assessment to the Assigned list. Click the Assign checkbox for a lesson or tutorial on the Optional list to move the assignment to the Assigned list. c. Lessons are represented with a book icon and tutorials are represented with a blue computer icon. d. Click the Tutorial links to open and view a tutorial. Click the Help in the tutorial popup window for details about the function of each button in the tutorial. Click the Red X in the upper right corner to close the tutorial. e. The date of the assignment s most recent status change is posted to the left of the assignment s checkboxes. This includes changes and activity made by you or your selected student. 20 Scoring Pinpoint Math automatically scores all assessments that your students complete online. You only need to use the scoring tool if your students complete assessments using a pencil and paper. To open the scoring section, click Go in the Scoring box on your homepage. From the Assessments or Reports page, click the Scoring tab. 1. Select a Volume and Assessment from the dropdown menus. The correct letter bubbles for the selected assessment are highlighted blue. 2. Select the group with the student(s) you want to grade from the Group dropdown menu. A list of the students from your selected class appears along the right side of your screen. Each student name has a Start Scoring, Continue, or View Test icon next to their name to alert you of your grading progress: 3. Click a student s name on the list to grade their assessment. An arrow icon appears next to the selected student s name. 4. Click the letter bubble in each question row that corresponds to the student s answer. a. Optionally click Set all answers to correct to quicken the grading process. Pinpoint Math selects the correct letter bubbles for each question. Go through and change any answers on the assessment that the student answered incorrectly. 5. If you finish grading an assessment, click finish now: save scores. If you want to continue grading later, click finish later: set marker. A thin yellow line appears to mark the last question you manually graded. Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 20 of 24

21 If you try to leave the scoring page, or if you try to select a new student or Volume without saving the current assessment open on your page, a popup box alerts you that your data will be lost. Click Cancel in the popup and then click finish later: set marker or finish now: save scores to save your grading progress. Any questions left blank count as incorrect for the student. 6. Once you save an assessment, click the Create New Attempt button that appears if you need to grade a student s new assessment attempt. Use the Item Analysis Report to view the results of all assessment attempts. Students and Pinpoint Math Logging In Students share your login page at and use the login details from their login cards. Students cannot use the password retrieval link. They must refer to their teacher for forgotten login details. Home Page The student homepage displays a My Assessments list and a My Action Plan list: The My Assessment side of their home page displays a To Do list for their assigned Volume pretests, posttests, and Progress Monitoring assessments. Students click the Start Assessments button, or an assessment s link on the To Do list to open and begin the assessment. If they click Start Assessments, the assessment that you assigned to them first opens. All of the student s finished assessments appear on the Completed list under the Start Assessments button with their final score. Students have a clickable View All Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 21 of 24

22 Completed Assessments link if their completed list includes more than three assessments. Once students complete an assessment, they click Go to My Student Action Plan on the right side of their page to access all of the lessons and tutorials that correlate to the objectives covered in their completed assessment(s). a. The lessons and tutorial titles that appear on the homepage under the Student Action Plan To Do list are not clickable. They represent the first five lessons and tutorials that are assigned to the student from their most recently completed assessment. b. Lessons have a book icon and tutorials have a blue computer icon. Assessments Students click an assessment s link or the Start Assessments button on their homepage to open an assessment. The Start Assessments button opens the longest assigned assessment first. The numbers across the top of a student s assessment page represent each question of their selected assessment. a. All assessment questions are multiple choice. Students click the letter bubble that represents the answer they believe is correct. b. Students click the left and right arrows at the top of their page to move backwards and forwards through each question. To jump to a specific question, students click the question s number. c. The question number highlighted yellow is the question open on the student s screen. d. Questions highlighted in dark blue are the questions the student has answered. e. Students click Save Assessment to complete an assessment at another time. Their progress is saved and they can continue to access their assessment from their homepage. 23 Students can continue to make changes to their answer choices until they submit the assessment. f. Students click Submit Assessment once they complete all of the questions and are satisfied with their answer choices. Student Action Plan Students click Go to My Action Plan to access and view their complete list of assigned lessons and tutorials: Action plans are organized by Volume. If a student completes assessments for multiple Volumes, they must click and select the Volume button along the left side of their action plan page. The selected Volume is highlighted blue. Students click the triangle next to a Volume title on their TO DO, COMPLETED, or OPTIONAL lists to expand each section s list of lessons and tutorials. To open and begin a tutorial, students click the tutorial s title. A tutorial popup window opens. Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 23 of 24

24 Pinpoint Math provides lesson titles and page numbers, but students must use their student booklet to access lessons. When students finish a lesson in the TO DO list, they must click the lesson s Completed checkbox to move its title to the COMPLETED list. All of the lessons and tutorials in a student s TO DO list correlate to the objectives that they failed in their pretest. All lessons and tutorials that students complete from their TO DO list move to the COMPLETED list. The lessons and tutorials in a student s OPTIONAL list correspond to the objectives that they passed in their pretest. a. If a student completes an Optional tutorial, the tutorial remains in the OPTIONAL list. b. Lessons in the OPTIONAL list do not have a Completed checkbox. Students click Back to Home Page if they want to access or complete an assessment. Students click LOGOUT to end their Pinpoint Math session. Tutorial Navigation When students click a tutorial title, a new popup window opens. The bottom of the tutorial page provides students with navigational buttons. Students click Try It at any time to try sample questions that correlate to the material taught in the presented tutorial. Students click Model It to return to the tutorial demonstration. Students click the Home button or the red X in the upper right corner to close the tutorial and return to the Action Plan page. Students click Glossary to see a list of definitions for the keywords used in the tutorial review. Students click Help for navigational instructions. Students click Start Over to restart the tutorial demonstration. Students click the orange play/pause button to start or pause the tutorial. Pinpoint Math s User Guide Page 24 of 24
