1 The Cheddar Letter June, 2018 President s Message: It is hard to believe that we are at the end of another Chapter year. With the end of May comes the end of my Presidency. It has been an honor to lead our Chapter for the last two years. During those two years, I have grown as a leader and also had the opportunity to meet many great auditors! These last two years would not have been possible without the hard working board members. I would like to say a big thank you to all of our Officers and Governors! All of our events would not be possible without their work and dedication. It is with great pleasure that I introduce our new President, Melissa Simonis. Melissa has held many roles within our Chapter, most recently as Vice President. I know that she will continue to look for ways to improve our Chapter. Highlights of the presentation included discussing what internal auditors do, how to become an internal auditor and what students can do while in college to prepare for a career or internship in internal audit. The presentation was followed by networking with students and facility with the goal of reinforcing the IIA s presence in colleagues throughout our chapter s footprint. 7 IIA Leadership Academy Submitted by Melissa Simonis LEADERS TAKE ALL was the game show-like theme of the 2018 IIA Leadership Academy held April in Orlando, Florida. Matt Rotter, 1st Vice President-elect and Melissa Simonis, President-elect attended this year to learn about building a better Chapter, IIA best practices, strengthening leadership skills and networking with other IIA leaders. The conference included an engaging keynote speaker, author Justin Jones-Fosu, sharing his perspective on The 4 Traits of High Impact Leaders. At the close of the event, Justin encouraged and motivated all of us to re-energize our leadership passion by reflecting on our WHY WHY did you get involved? - WHY do you volunteer? WHY is the IIA, the Chapter or Internal Auditing important to you? What s your WHY, or WHY NOT? Young Professionals Committee It is with great pleasure that we announce a new committee as part of our chapter the IIA Young Professionals Committee. This is part of a cross country effort by the IIA to help recruit and encourage young professionals to consider audit as a desired career choice. 10 Tell Us Your Story Dr. Jennifer Jordan is an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. Jennifer has been an Internal Auditor for four years and her background includes experience in the Public Health, Health Care, and Environmental Health and Safety fields. Her experience working with state and federal regulations has helped Jennifer to grow in her position. Jennifer s future auditing plan includes securing the Certified Professional Environmental Auditor specialty certification from the IIA. Jennifer joined the Fox Valley Chapter Board in April, 2018 and is the current editor of the Chapter Cheddar Letter. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her five year old daughter Xiomara and Bichon Honey. She also enjoys beading, attending pow wows and Green Bay Packer games. 11 Tell Us Your Story Continued... Travis Wouters is a Consultant in Risk Advisory Services with Wipfli, LLP, and an IT consultant for 15 years prior to joining the IT examination group. Over the past 4 years performing risk-based general IT controls audits, Travis has added Service Organization Controls (SOC) and HITRUST testing in addition to attest security services such as vulnerability assessment and social engineering. When not working, Travis enjoys time with his wife Sara, and 10 year old daughter Ella. Photo submitted by Travis Wouters Looking to Network? You can use this time to share audit techniques, discover resources for continuing education, or get everyone s thoughts on audit topics in the news. In addition, pie charts are the easiest charts to read and are a great visual for audiences of all reading levels. For example, I took a survey of favorite ice cream flavors of the audit staff in my office: Favorite Ice Cream Flavors 2 4 Chocolate 2 Vanilla 2 Strawberry None of the Above The key to using pie charts, or any chart is to know your audience. Keeping the information as simple as possible will enable you to display your results so that the data is comprehended by all. 14
