How Can Art Inform Change? Using Political Art to Teach Media Literacy Grade 8 Justin Riner John Muir Middle School, Burbank INTRODUCTION: My students will begin this unit after their study of The Diary of Anne Frank and their writing of a This I Believe essay. Those two units address overarching themes of individuality, citizenship, and belief systems. This unit puts those themes into action by giving students an opportunity to investigate concerns that they have about their community and a forum for which they will use their individual skills to speak out about those concerns. COMPELLING QUESTION: How can art inform change? SUPPORTING QUESTIONS: What is art and why is it important? What makes something political? How do people use tools other than words to make a statement? How has art been used in the past to inform the public and inform change? Why is the first amendment vital? What is the purpose of political art? How can an artist make one image represent many ideas in one piece of art? How do artists use detail in order to convey a message? Can visual arts be more powerful than words? Why are songs a good way to express protest? How may art make things real to citizens in a way that a newspaper can t? Who are some people that have used their unique talents in order to inform change? What skills do you have that can make an impact in your community? What are important images/feelings related to your topic and how can you include those in the piece? Why does a student s point of view matter? How is art used to reflect modern conditions/concerns/priorities? EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1

Art has the potential to ignite just as much change as a law or a war. Through this unit, students will become aware of the power of art to educate, enlighten, and persuade. This awareness will be influenced by observing various examples of protest art: propaganda, music, sculpture, murals, and photography, among others. They will learn how modern issues are being confronted through art and how those pieces are part of a long history of such work. They will then select an issue in their community that concerns them and work to represent it through their own art. The final project will show that students are aware of the world around them including problems and possible solutions. ELA/LITERACY COMMON CORE STANDARDS: W.8.7- Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self- generated question) drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration. RI.8.7- Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using different mediums to present a topic or idea. RI.8.3- Analyze how a text makes connections among and distinctions between individuals, ideas, or events RI.8.4- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone W.8.1- Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence W.8.2- Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic, convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection and analysis of relevant content. W.8.5- With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, and rewriting W.8.6- Use technology, including the internet to produce and present the relationships between information and ideas as well as collaborate with others. Other standards addressed in various lessons in the unit include: RI.8.1 (and RL.8.1)- Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what a text says explicit as well as inferences. RI.8.6- Determine an author s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author acknowledges and responds to conflicting evidence or viewpoints RI.8.9- Analyze a case in which two or more texts provide conflicting information on the same topic and identify where the texts disagree ASSESSMENT/PERFORMANCE TASK: The culminating project will be a piece of art created in a small group that reflects a problem that the students have identified in their community. To create this piece, students will incorporate the research they ve done on the topic and the artistic techniques studied in order to make a statement about their concerns. GRADED ASSIGNMENTS AND STANDARDS: 1. History detective summary (group writing of what they found) and presentation to the class (W.8.5 and RI.8.3). 2. Worksheet on Armenian Genocide and First Amendment (General- Reading Informational Text). 3. Polish Cowboy Movie Posters (comparing and contrasting posters. RI.8.9). 4. Protest art research (looking for context, meaning, creator. RL.8.1 and RI.8.3 and RI.8.4 and RI.8.6 and RI.8.7 and W.8.1 and W.8.2 and W.8.6 and W.8.7). 2

5. Group presentation on an art piece they were given (W.8.5). 6. Project proposal: background on the topic, sketch of project idea, each group member s role (RI.8.1 andri.8.4 and W.8.1 and W.8.2 and W.8.5 and W.8.6 and W.8. 7). 7. Final project and exhibition. ACADEMIC VOCABULARY: In addition to some new terms, students will be discussing deeper meanings of words that they are already familiar with. Note: this is a preliminary list and more terms will be added as the unit is implemented for the first time. 1. Curator 2. Inquiry 3. Mixed media 4. Art 5. Inform 6. Social issues 7. Historical context 8. Perspective PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS: Post- WWII Polish and American movie posters Objects for the History Detective activity: art tools, Spanish- English dictionary, gardening tools, old cameras, etc. The pieces on exhibition in the Autry Museum observed during field trip Prints of political art from around the world (including envelopes from the Autry s Civil War exhibit) MOTIVATION: Beyond the excitement that comes with displaying work in a museum, the opportunity to analyze and discuss their feelings about making their world better will be a huge motivator. All too often, students are told that they are too young to understand their surroundings- let alone have an impact on it. This project gives them a platform to express their artistic and political voices. MAKING CONNECTIONS: This unit combines many aspects of the student s recent studies of The Diary of Anne Frank and their writing of a This I Believe essay. An integral aspect of understanding WWII is the use of visual cues to influence thought and spread ideas. This makes a unit on visual literacy particularly relevant. Additionally, the two previous units make students consider the role of individuals within a community. During this project, students will examine examples of political art and consider how the artists reflected their times; bringing attention to concerns that they had. Students will be exposed to many types of art including painting, songwriting, photography, and sculpture and analyzing how those mediums are specifically effective in expressing ideas. More specific connections to the study of WWII include the topic of 3

propaganda as well as the inclusion of Toyo Miyatake and Manzinar in the history detective activity. LESSON ACTIVITIES: Day 1- Representatives from the Autry Classroom Curator project comes in to introduce the unit. Day 2-3- History Detective Trunk Activity. 1) Each group gets a pack of artifacts 2) They fill out a worksheet to make guesses about who this person is and what clues the artifacts give about their owner. Their responses will be basic jobs: painter, musician, gardener. Then, they will be asked, How can these be used to create change? 3) Give secondary source of a newspaper or bio to each group that informs them about how a person used their artifacts to make change. People reflected include: Toyo Miyatake, Ron Finley, Judy Baca, Woody Guthrie, Dolores Huerta, Ida B Wells. 4) Do a guided writing of who this person is and present it to class. Day 4- Autry Museum visit. In addition to being exposed to the exhibits in the museum, students will attend workshops with historians, museum educators, and a working artist to learn about various media, how artists use details to convey messages in their art, how audiences receive art, and how to perform research on topics beyond the first Google result. The work that they are observing will not all be protest art at this point. Day 5- Lesson on mood and tone using Mood For Mary demonstration. Day 6- Activity on Polish cowboy movie posters. Analyze the way that movie Westerns were advertised in post- WWII Poland as opposed to their American advertisements. Discuss how those depictions of the same material reflect the tone and mood of the cultural context. This activity was developed with assistance by Marva Felchlin (Director of Libraries and Archives) at the Autry Museum. Day 7- First Amendment worksheet/reading/discussion. The day will also include a reading and discussion of Red Sunday, which was the first major event of the Armenian Holocaust. On this day, The Ottoman Empire deported and killed Armenian leaders including publishers and various types of artists. These two topics will be joined together to show the value of free speech as well as the power of art in a society. Possible inclusion: discussion on recent Charlie Hebdo attacks. Day 8- Watch portions of the PBS Documentary Art21: Protest. Day 9, 10, and 11- In the same groups as the history detective activity, students will be given a piece of protest art. Write a list of terms to search for in order to learn about the piece. They research the piece, the issue (write ten things they learned and then another question 4

where they narrow it down), techniques used and write an explanation. If a group gets done early, have a worksheet that applies to all- what community is the person a part of, etc). Present the work and explain. Additionally on Day 10- For the class warm- up, we will do our weekly Tune Up Song activity using a protest song by Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan. Emphasizing points about the simplicity of the song and singer s voice as a good way to get the idea across to an audience and include them. The following week, I will play Mr. Landlord or Mr. Wendel by Arrested Development. Day 12- As a class, brainstorm current issues in the American West. Discuss them, etc. Break into groups based on which is biggest concern to address. After grouping them together, do story circle with timer to share a story- not explanation- about why this is something they are concerned about. Brainstorm ideas about the problem (a guiding handout may help): what are the reasons for concern, who is affected, what are aspects of the topic that people may overlook, what are some results of the problem existing, what are some solutions? Day 13- Give them the project to create their own work of protest art (poetry, sculpture, song, photography, painting, short play) for exhibition. This day is spent coming up with ideas about how to present their ideas. Picking their media should happen as well. Day 14- Guest artist comes in to help the students fine- tune their ideas before starting. Day 15- Continue to sketch idea and bring proposal to teacher for approval. Day 16- Work on final product Day 17- Labeling workshop with Autry Classroom Curator Day 18- Guest artist returns to guide students as they work on their final result. Day 19- Continue work and finish labels. Day 20- Finish final product! Day 21- Exhibition at the Autry CROSS CURRICULAR CONNECTIONS: This project- based unit is tied in with the students ELA studies and learning literacy through different media, but it is equally applicable to the disciplines of art studies and social studies. Skills developed and practiced through the duration of this include but are not limited to: artistic creation, quality research, observation, summary, literacy in various media, self- expression, persuasive writing, project planning, and understanding cultural context. 5
