MTH 116 MATHEMATICAL APPLICATIONS - 3 Semester Hours II. Course Description A. This course provides practical applications of mathematics and includes selected topics from consumer math and algebra. Some types included are integers, percent, interest, ratio and proportion, metric system, probability, linear equations, and problem solving. This is a terminal course designed for students seeking an AAS degree and does not meet the general core requirement for mathematics. III. The student will demonstrate mastery of algebraic algorithms relative to the subsets of the rational numbers, numerical expressions, algebraic expressions, linear equations, or formulas, by being able to apply the necessary algebraic manipulations in order to simplify. IX. Course Objectives Stated in Performance Terms A. He/She should be able to: 1. Identify polynomials and their degree. 2. Apply the rules of exponents to quantities involving exponents. 3. Add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. 4. Use the properties of equations to solve equations. 5. Use procedures for problem solving and the properties of equations to set up and solve problems involving equations. 6. Use the properties of inequalities and comparison to solve inequalities. a. Solve the inequality. b. Graph the solution set. D. The student will demonstrate mastery of algebraic algorithms relative to numerical expressions, and equations by being able to apply the necessary algebraic manipulations in order to use percents for problem solving. He/She should be able to: 1. Simplify ratios 2. Identity proportions 3. Use procedures for solving proportions to set up and solve problems. 4. Write percents as fractions and decimals. 5. Write decimals as percents and fractions. 6. Write fractions as decimals and percents. 7. Solve problems involving percents. E. The student will demonstrate mastery of algebraic algorithms relative to formulas for

Fundamental counting principle. XI. Attendance Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance, should withdraw from that class before poor attendance interferes with the student s ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid. XII.
