1 Lake-Sumter State College Course Syllabus Course / Prefix Number MAC 1114 Course Title: Trigonometry CRN: Credit: 3 Term: Spring 2014 Course Catalog Description: Instructor: This is a calculus preparatory course in trigonometry that, in conjunction with MAC 1140 (Precalculus Algebra), is designed to provide the student with the trigonometric skills necessary for MAC 2311 (Calculus with Analytic Geometry 1). Major topics include: trigonometric functions, their properties and graphs; inverse trigonometric functions, their properties and graphs; right triangle trigonometry; trigonometric identities; trigonometric equations; the law of sines and the law of cosines; polar coordinates; vectors; and parametric equations. Prerequisites: Textbook and Other Course Materials: Technology and Online Computer Access Requirements: Course Objectives: (what the course will do) C or higher in MAC 1105 or appropriate placement score Precalculus: Functions and Graphs, 4 nd Ed. Mark Dugopolski A Graphing Calculator is required. The TI-83 or 84 are recommended but any graphing calculator that does not perform symbolic manipulation may be used. To give the student a solid algebraic and trigonometric foundation for successful completion of the calculus sequence. 1

2 1. The student will demonstrate and apply knowledge of the six trigonometric functions. a. Define degree and radian measure and how to convert between them, relate radian measure, arc length, and radius, and apply these ideas to linear and angular velocity. b. Develop the six trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent) over the set of real numbers and evaluate these functions at special values using reference angles and by using technology. c. Graph the sine and cosine functions with and without technology, including scale changes and translations, and determine the amplitude, phase shift, and period from an equation or graph. d. Define, graph (including scale changes and translations), apply, and evaluate the tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent functions. e. Define, graph, apply, and evaluate the inverses of the six trigonometric functions. f. Apply trigonometry to solve right triangles, including real-world applications. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Assessed in this Course: (what the students take with them beyond this course) 2. The student will demonstrate and apply knowledge of trigonometric identities and conditional equations. a. Develop and apply basic trigonometric identities, including definitions, reciprocals, Pythagorean identities, and odd and even identities. b. Prove (or disprove) trigonometric identities. c. Determine and apply sum, difference, cofunction, double-angle, and half-angle identities d. Solve conditional trigonometric equations. 3. The student will apply trigonometry to the solution of problems, including real-world applications. Academic Integrity: Important Information for Students with a. Develop and apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines to help solve triangles, find the area of a triangle, and solve real-world applications. b. Define, graph, and apply vectors, including vector multiplication and addition, scalar multiplication, the dot product, the component form of a vector, the angle between two vectors, and real-world applications using vectors. c. Determine products, quotients, powers, and roots of complex numbers in trigonometric form, including the use of DeMoivre s Theorem for finding roots. d. Graph polar equations with and without technology and convert between polar and rectangular form. e. Define, graph, and apply parametric equations, including the parametric equation of a line segment. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. 1232g; 34 CFR Part99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a student s education records. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office. Regular attendance is essential to your success in this course. Attendance will be taken daily in some form. Those who miss a substantial amount of classes will receive an F. If you must miss a class, you should contact a fellow student to find out what was covered, copy notes, etc. because you are responsible for what was covered during your absence, not mine. If you wish to withdraw from this course, it is your responsibility to go to the Admissions Office and do so officially by the deadline listed in the College Catalog. If you miss a test for any reason, you will receive a zero on it. If you miss a test I will replace the zero with your final exam score (see methods of evaluation for more details). If you miss a second test accommodations will be made only in extreme cases. Withdrawal Deadline: Methods of Evaluation: Grading Scale: Course Calendar: The deadline for withdrawing from this course this semester is Friday March 21, There will be four tests and a cumulative Final Exam. The 4 regular tests will count as 80% of your course grade and the Final will count at 20% of your course grade. Your lowest test grade will not be dropped but it will be replaced with your final exam grade if your final exam grade is higher than your lowest test grade. **A missed test will automatically become your lowest test score. If you are disruptive, then I will ask you to leave and you will be counted as absent and receive a zero if it is during a test. 2. Silent all cell phones and other electronic devices before class. Testing Policies 1. On test days, the test starts when I walk in the door. Please do not have textbooks and notes out. Study outside the classroom and come in when you are prepared to start. 2. All items must be off the table/desk except for a writing utensil (Calculator if permitted). There may be tests or portions of tests in which calculators will not be permitted. 3. You may not use your own scrap paper. I will provide you with paper if it is needed. 4. All answers must be in simplified form. For this class, this means simplify fractions, complex fractions, and radicals and rationalize denominators. 5. Turn in everything including any scrap paper. 6. Only your actual test paper will be graded therefore all of your final solutions and answers must be on the test paper. I will not grade anything on scrap paper. 7. If you are using a calculator not approved by the instructor or when calculators are not permitted you will receive an automatic zero. 8. If you arrive late then you have the remainder of the test time to complete the test, as do students who were on time. 9. You may not leave the room until you submit your test. Use the restroom before you come to the test! If you leave the room I will collect your test and grade it as is. 10. If you leave the room with your test under any circumstances you will automatically receive a zero. 11. If you are caught cheating or letting someone else cheat you will receive a zero or fail the course, at the discretion of the instructor.
