3 Number Sense Day 1 1. Prior to this lesson, your students must know odd and even numbers and multiplication and division of factors 0 10; and they must have a basic understanding of money (e.g., 10 nickels equals 50 cents, half a dollar is 50 cents). 2. Make an overhead transparency and copies of the organizer on page 10. Obtain clear number tiles (or cut out the ones on your transparency) to use on the overhead. 3. Have your students cut out the individual number tiles on the page. 4. Have your students glue their tile boards to a piece of poster board and store their number tiles in a zipper bag. 5. Tell the students to place the tiles, moving from top to bottom. Working as a class, solve the first two problems. Then have one student come up and display the correct answer on the overhead. 6. Say, Now we are going to use each tile once. I will ask the question, and you will place the tiles. Do not shout out the answer. If you don t know one, skip it. We ll go over it. 7. Ask these questions: How many eggs are in a dozen? (12) How many days in 7 weeks? (49) What odd number is a factor of 6? (3) How many cents in half a dollar? (50 ) What is 42 divided by 6? (7) What is the even number between 66 and 70? (68) The answers to these problems are shown on the completed graphic organizer on page Go over the answers, asking individual students to explain how they determined the right answer. Day 2 2. Ask these questions: What is 48 divided by 8? (6) How many hours are in a day? (24) I have three quarters. How many cents do I have? (75 ) In counting, after the number one, what is the next odd number? (3) What is the value of nine dimes? (90 ) Name an odd number that is the product of 9. (81 can t be 18 because that s an even number product of 9) Days Repeat the activity above using a variety of questions you have prepared in advance. Next Week 2. Pair the students. They must place all 10 digits in any order and then write appropriate number sentences or questions next to each number. This is challenging because the children must generate the questions and can use each digit only once. 3. Have each pair write their number sentences and answers on a piece of paper to turn in. 4.
