We will continue to work on proper pronunciation, formation and usage of spoken as well as written French. Our focus will remain the four fundamental skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. We will work on increasing vocabulary and grammatical structures that are necessary for communicating in real-world situations. We will review basic structures from second year French and continue to increase our understanding and use of French. We ll learn new verb tenses and grammatical forms and we ll grow our vocabulary to improve our overall fluency. My Philosophy: I love French, learning languages and exploring other cultures and peoples. Learning another language is an essential part of everyone s education. Sadly, others have not always shared this view, especially in the United States. We can change this! It s normal for students in Europe to take at least two foreign languages in school, beginning as early as the age of 6!! Not only are they able to communicate with other people and share in other cultures more fully, but they are also better prepared for their studies in general. Learning another language, French, Music. Math, etc., stimulates your brain in new and exciting ways. French is not just a requirement to graduate or to get into a good college; it s a tool for unlocking new ideas, cultures and points of view. Information: Organization is one of the keys to success in life! Please have a separate, notebook for all of your French work: warm-up activities, notes, homework and study guides. This will help you when it s time to review and prepare for quizzes and tests, and it will help me when I grade your work. You may also store and organize this work electronically and then share it with me. In the event of an absence YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for the materials that you missed. Check with a classmate, send me an , come see me, check my WEBPAGE and/or POWERSCHOOL, RETURN to class PREPARED! Grading: I will follow the letter grade/percentage breakdowns and the semester grade calculations found in the Marist Catholic High School Student Handbook: I will base your grade on the following categories:

2 30% In-class participation (In-class, on time, with required materials, attentive, on task, answering, asking questions, participating in group activities, speaking French!) 20% Homework, Frequent, smaller practice, 2 points if complete at the start of class, 1 point if partially complete at the start of class, 0 points for zero work 20% Quizzes, smaller vocabulary, verb quizzes or small lesson quizzes, points possible will vary 20% Tests, Larger, chapter or unit tests covering more material, points possible will vary 10% Projects, Group Work, in-class dialogues, mini-scenes, individual/group research projects/presentations, points possible will vary We will have homework almost every day in this class. Practice outside of class is an important way for you to improve your skills. I know your lives are busy, but for now, school is priority #1. You can find your assignments online and if you have a question or a problem send me an or come and talk to me BEFORE class. Show me that you are making an effort and I will make an effort to help you. Late assignments will not be accepted! Do your work on time, when it s called for! If you have an excused absence homework must be made up within the same number of days you were gone and exams must be completed within one week. When you are ABSENT I enter a ZERO for your score and a note that full credit may be earned when the work is made up on time. Phones and electronic devices are NOT TO BE USED WITHOUT PERMISSION. You MAY drink water. You may NOT eat. You MAY interact kindly in an UPlifting way with your classmates and teachers. You may NOT put people down or make fun of them. You MAY use appropriate, respectful language. You MAY do your own best work and NOT use someone else s as your own. You MAY use wordreference.com or the app, you may NOT use google translate or other online translators, that s not your work and it teaches you nothing! 3 Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Talk about sports and activities using Faire de 2. Use adjectives of frequency to talk about how often someone does something 3. Talk about health and fitness and describe physical and mental states 4. Correctly use the pronouns Y and EN 5. Express everyday and reciprocal actions using reflexive and pronominal verbs in the present, passé composé, imperative and infinitive forms 6. Describe past events using the passé composé 7. Describe where they live, what kind of house or apartment, how many rooms, what kind of rooms, etc. 8. Correctly use the relative pronouns qui and que 9. Describe recurring and ongoing events using the imparfait 10. Describe the time, weather, feelings, physical and mental states using the imparfait 11. Compare and contrast the use of the passé compose and the imparfait 12. Talk about the future using regular and irregular verbs 13. Use the future tense with If clauses 14. Use the future tense with quand/lorsque, aussitôt que/dès que 15. Talk about what people would or wouldn t do using the conditional 16. 4 Essay and Error Correction Guide Rédactions: (essays) 1. You may either write or type your rough draft, (brouillon), of your rédaction. Final drafts should always be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font. Use French spelling and grammar help available with your word-processing software. 2. Always double (or triple) space to leave room for corrections. 3. Try as much as possible to think in French. Please don't write something in English and then try to translate it. Your French is not at the same level as your English. Besides, translation is a very difficult and sophisticated skill! 4. Do not use online translators! They don t work and I ll know it s not your work! Use the French you already know, focusing on the verbs and vocabulary that we have been learning in class. 5. Use to find words that you don t know. Make sure to use the right form or meaning of the word. You can also check verb conjugations here. Error Correction Guide 1. You will receive your rédaction with errors highlighted. Do your best to figure out what you need to change. I will give you some notes to help. If you are not sure how to correct a mistake come and see me and we will go over your work together. 2. In order to learn from your mistakes, for each rédaction you will note down 3-5 mistakes that you made and how to correct them. This will serve you well on future rédactions. KEY TO ABBREVIATION? I don t understand. o. orthographe=spelling p.q.p. =use plus-que-parfait m. masculine c.p. =use conditionnel passé f. feminine f.p. =use futur passé pl. plural syn. syntax-word order incorrect v. verb conjugation incorrect subj. = subjonctif voc. vocabulary, use a different word? = español! art. article missing or wrong form something is missing être use être with this verb in the past ex. art.= missing article avoir use avoir with this verb in the past not needed, eliminate vt. verb tense incorrect cond. = use conditionnel fut. = use futur imp. = use imparfait ind. = use indicatif p.c. = passé composé prés. = présent

5 Les Rédactions en Français La notation des rédactions: each redaction will receive a grade from 0-25 for the content and 0-25 for the form, for a total score of 50 points. I will use the following rubric to grade your written essays. Contenu: (content) Superb! Original ideas, well developed and well supported, good use of varied and appropriate vocabulary Very interesting and fairly original. The argument/story is well presented but there are a few things that could be better developed Interesting, but there are several aspects that need to be better developed. The argument or story lacks force and may be too short. 4-9 Superficial, lacks ideas and development, the directions for the assignment were not followed! 0-3 Very superficial, minimal or nearly zero effort or thought given, directions completely ignored! Forme: Excellent! Without comprehension problems, vocabulary and grammar studied in class has been applied very well Very good, a few errors, but they do not interfere with the overall comprehension, a few mistakes in mechanics (errors in gender, accordance, spelling, etc.) Good, but some errors interfere with comprehension, multiple mistakes in mechanics, (gender, accord, spelling, etc.), anglicized words/constructions. 4-9 Serious grammar and syntax errors that get in the way of comprehension.
