With the new BTEC Tech Award in Travel and Tourism, your students get the chance to develop valuable skills and knowledge in one of the UK s fastest growing sectors employing nearly 3 million people, and explore potential careers in this exciting industry. 2

3 How the course works The BTEC Tech Award in Travel and Tourism is a practical introduction to life and work in the industry. Your students can explore this exciting sector, including: a stimulating introduction to the world of travel and tourism the importance of travel and tourism to the UK and world economies an insight into key areas such tourism development, trends and much more. The course has two internally assessed components, and one that s externally assessed: These components build on each other to motivate your students by helping them put what they ve learned into practice and grow in confidence. 3

4 Component 1: Travel and Tourism Organisations and Destinations Weighting 30% Aim: examine the types and aims of travel and tourism organisations and different travel destinations Assessment: internally assessed assignments During Component 1 your students will learn about: the travel and tourism sector and tourist destinations the importance of travel and tourism to the UK the type and purpose of different travel and tourism organisations different types of holidays and reasons for travel 4

5 Component 2: Influences on Global Travel and Tourism Weighting 30% Aim: investigate global travel and tourism and its impact on global destinations Assessment: externally assessed written paper that requires learners to apply their knowledge and understanding of the factors influencing tourism and the impact of tourism on destinations and destination management. During Component 2 your students will investigate: factors influencing the travel and tourism industry sustainability and destination management the impact of global tourism on local communities, the economy and the environment tourism development 5

6 Component 3: Customer Needs in Travel and Tourism Weighting 40% Aim: understand how organisations use market research within the travel and tourism industry Assessment: internally assessed assignments* During Component 3 your students will: investigate how travel and tourism organisations use research to identify customer needs explore the range of products offered by travel and tourism organisations consider how organisations respond to market trends to meet customer needs plan a holiday to meet customer needs and preferences *synoptic assessment 6

7 Where the course can lead... With a BTEC Tech Award in Travel and Tourism, your students are able to explore, challenge and realise their potential. During the course: Students can see whether the Travel and Tourism industry is one they want to work in, where they could go, and gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their next steps. After completing the course: Your students can continue on to further vocational and academic study at Level 2 and Level 3, as well as apprenticeships and traineeships. What s more: The transferable skills your students master during their studies such as selfreflection, communication, teamwork and problem solving will also support their progress. 7
