3 Our School At Menston Primary School we aim to provide the children with a high quality education and pride ourselves on a team ethos, promoting the highest standards of care, learning and achievement for all of our children. As a team we work to promote a lifelong love for learning. Everything we do is centred around the children and their right to be encouraged, to achieve, to find their talents, to enjoy learning and to succeed in whatever they choose. We strive to create an environment that allows children to enjoy learning within a happy and caring environment. Our History There has been a village School on our site since Victorian times. In the 1960 s a new infant school was added to the site and in 2004 a third building was converted for classroom use and now houses our three year 3 classes and our before and after school Care Club. Our Environment Menston Primary now consists of three main buildings set in extensive grounds, comprising of a woodland area along with a school garden and pond; this promotes a healthy attitude to nature which we, as a school, greatly value. All our children have regular, planned outdoor learning experiences and we run four different residential trips each year in Key Stage 2. As well as teaching the importance of nature, we also ensure that children engage in team work and exercise. We have very large playing fields, as well as three playgrounds, which really help our children to explore a range of sporting activities and have fun. We participate in friendly, but serious, competition within our local schools sports leagues based at Ilkley Grammar School. We also have many talented musicians and we have been developing musical opportunities steadily for several years. We are proud of our warm and positive learning environment. Our classrooms are well equipped and our teachers are innovative and creative. They love to inspire our children. Our Ethos We believe that teaching children how best to learn in different situations is as important as the subject specific knowledge they all need to acquire. Because of this we encourage our children to take increasing control over their own learning, to coach each other and to peer and self-assess where this is appropriate. As a result, each day our children grow more confident and more independent and they are able to take on more responsibility for their own learning.

4 Why has this role become available? Menston Primary School has been growing. We have 100 more pupils than we had 5 years ago. We have a Phase Leader for LKS2 and a Phase Leader of UKS2 and we now need someone to work with these two leaders and their teams, to develop consistently good teaching across the whole Key Stage. 5 Job Description - Assistant Headteacher (Teaching and Learning Lead for KS2) Salary Scale L2-6 Visit Date Thursday 1 st February pm Closing Date Thursday 15 th February noon Interview Date Thursday 22 nd and Friday 23 rd February 2018 Job Start Monday 16 th April 2018 The appointment is subject to the current conditions of employment for members of the Leadership Team contained in the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document, the 1998 School Standards and Framework Act, the required standards for Qualified Teacher Status and other current legislation. The postholder is required to carry out under the reasonable direction of the Head Teacher the professional duties of a teacher which are set out in the relevant paragraphs of the School Teachers Pay and Conditions document and any subsequent amendments. This job description outlines main duties and responsibilities, but does not direct the particular amount of time to be spent carrying them out. The teaching duties listed will qualify for non-contact time for Preparation, Planning and Assessment, in line with your teaching time (10%). Further regular and discreet Leadership and Management time will be negotiated and identified to ensure that you are well placed to make significant contributions to managing and improving provision. Overall Job Purpose To work closely with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team on the strategic direction and accountability of the school. The post holder will be a strategic and supportive lead member of the Senior Leadership Team. The postholder will play a key lead role in the development of staff expertise and the acceleration of pupil progress for all groups in KS2. The post holder will play a key role in ensuring both the effective and efficient operation of the day to day business and the overall strategic direction of the Key Stage. In addition to carrying out the professional duties of an Assistant Headteacher, in accordance with the safeguarding of children and Pay and Conditions document, the post holder shall, in consultation with the Headteacher and Deputy, play the following part: Strategic Direction and Development Take the lead strategic oversight for specified areas of improvement and development and to also make a significant contribution to the strategic development of other areas of the school (with a particular focus on KS2). Help to develop and maintain progressive school policies and practices which promote high achievement and inclusion through effective teaching and learning across the school. Play a key role in creating and sharing the vision for school improvement over the medium and longer term. Liaise effectively with all stakeholders including parents, governors, partner primary schools, partner secondary schools and the wider community and network with innovative and high achieving schools.

6 Leadership and Management Role Teaching and Learning Other Responsibilities Line manage designated teaching areas/support staff, working collaboratively to raise pupil achievement and attainment and to provide effective support, guidance, challenge and information for all staff including NQT and ITT colleagues within designated areas of responsibilities. Take a major role in developing staff by applying the School s appraisal policy in addition to promoting and providing Continuous Professional Development opportunities. Ensure the professional effectiveness of teaching and support staff colleagues, maintaining clear expectations, high standards of professionalism and collaboration. Take the lead co-ordination for key aspects of School organisation and management as required. Support the SLT in the creation and implementation of the Self-Evaluation Form (SEF) and School Improvement Plan (SIP) within the national and local context, and to take responsibility for appropriately delegated aspects of it. Effectively support and challenge all staff in achieving the priorities and targets which the school sets for itself. Work with SLT to ensure that parents are well informed about the school curriculum, its targets, children s attainment/progress and their part in the process of improvement. Support the Headteacher in the appointment, deployment and development of staff to make most effective use of their skills, expertise and experience and to ensure that all staff have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities. Contribute to the management and organisation of relevant groupings of children to ensure effective teaching and learning takes place that impacts positively on progress and children s personal development. Have a highly visible presence in the school in order to support the maintenance of a positive school ethos. Be responsible for leading teams of adults, and their morale management. Support the vision, ethos and policies of the school and promote high levels of achievement. Sustain an effective, aesthetic, stimulating and inclusive learning environment in KS2 and deploy accommodation to effectively meet the teaching and learning/pupil needs across the Key Stage. Ensure a safe working and learning environment through application of appropriate risk assessments and adherence to current Health & Safety regulations. Model the highest standards in classroom teaching. Secure and sustain effective teaching through structured monitoring, evaluation and review processes. Make major contributions to the leadership and development of the curriculum to best reflect the school s curricular aims and to meet the needs of all pupils. Promote enrichment activities and events which motivate and inspire children and staff. Seek opportunities to collaborate with other innovative and high achieving schools or networks to share and develop best practice. Act at all times as an ambassador for the school in a manner which upholds its values and ethos and to model behaviour consistent with the school s standards and aspirations. Take an active lead role in the school s pastoral care of pupils. Foster good relationships with parents and the wider community. Demonstrate a firm commitment to personal professional development.

7 General Act as a critical friend and provide effective professional challenge and support to the Headteacher and other SLT members. Provide information and advice to the Headteacher and governing body and support proper accountability processes throughout the school. Take on specific tasks related to the day to day administration and organisation of the school. To model the behaviours of a leading professional in challenging under performance in all its guises. This job description may be amended at any time following discussion between the Headteacher and member of staff, and will be reviewed annually. In addition to the requirements of a class teacher and areas of responsibility, the Assistant Head teacher will support the Headteacher and strategically lead on key school improvement priorities. 8 Person Specification - Assistant Headteacher EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE Strong degree with Qualified Teacher Status. Evidence of continuous professional development. Written application. QUALITIES AND KNOWLEDGE A proven track record of high quality teaching within the primary phase. A clear understanding of what constitutes quality teaching and learning especially for vulnerable children, including those in receipt of the Pupil Premium. Knowledge of a range of approaches and strategies to engage all pupils and raise standards/pupil achievement. Experience of developing a high quality learning environment. Can demonstrate vision and positive, strategic leadership of an aspect of the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Experience of leading a major aspect of the whole school s work with a proven positive impact. Experience of delivering school based professional development with demonstrable impact. Experience and training related to an aspect of leadership and management. Experience as an appraiser who enjoys developing staff expertise. Experience of observing lessons and giving accurate and constructive feedback to colleagues. Some experience in monitoring and evaluating curriculum delivery. Proven success in raising standards at a year group, phase or key stage level. A thorough understanding of safeguarding children. Evidence of a deep interest in educational innovation which has led to action and innovation. A well-constructed application showing clear thinking about primary education and ideas to meet the post requirements.
