1 CA Spanish 1 Pre-AP Dear parents/guardians, I am very excited about the year ahead of us. I hope together we can help your student succeed in this class. In this packet you will have some information about the classroom procedures and the class. Sincerely, Leonel Longoria-Montiel CA Spanish 1 Pre-AP Spanish I Description and Goals This course focuses on the communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will learn vocabulary and grammar structures to give students tools for communication. An introduction to cultures of various Spanish speaking countries is integrated into the curriculum. Students become aware of the influence of Spanish on the English language and compare their own culture and language with those of the Spanish speaking countries studied. Guidelines for Success Students should fully participate in class; this includes oral speaking exercises, classwork, and homework. Students should review vocabulary, grammar, and verbs on a daily basis to excel in class. The more the student is exposed to the language the faster the student will be proficient. Students should be open minded to new ideas to better learn the Spanish language. Classroom Rules 1. Arrive on time with appropriate materials. 2. Follow all classroom expectations & Code of Conduct. 3. Food and drinks are not allowed, with the EXCEPTION of bottled water. 4. Keep hands, feet, objects, and inappropriate comments to yourself. 5. Stay actively involved. Consequences 1. Verbal warning. 2. Student conference. 3. Parent/guardian phone call. 4. Parent/guardian conference. 5. Referral. (Please note that certain offenses may warrant an immediate referral.) 1

2 Classroom Activities The following are some of the instructional strategies that will be used in class. These are some examples; others will also be used. Teacher-led instruction Group work Exit tickets Independent work Presentations Required daily materials o Pen and pencil Optional: Spanish-English Dictionary o Paper Optional: 501 Spanish Verbs o 1 clear view binder with 3 dividers (for warm-ups, notes, and vocabulary) Cell Phone Policy o Cell phones should be put away in backpacks unless you have been given specific permission to use them for classroom. Students do not have permission to charge electronic devices in this classroom. Failure to follow the cell phone policy will result in confiscation. Teacher will turn in cell phones to the student s assistant principal. Homework and Classwork Policy o Homework is due in homework basket as soon as student enters into the classroom. Submissions after warm up begins, are late. o Classwork is due in class. Any classwork not completed in class will be considered late unless otherwise specified by teacher. o Academic Honesty is expected, (copying another student s work or allowing your work to be copied). The student will receive a zero on the assignment, including tests, and will not be allowed to make it up. *Note: Plagiarism and use of electronic translation sites count as cheating. Make-up Work Policy o Student will only be able to make-up work for full credit if student had an excused absence. The students will have one week to make-up daily work, tests and quizzes. After that, the missing work will be considered late. o Work will be posted on the back board for a period of two weeks. If a student is absent it is their responsibility to find out what work they missed. o For late work, the student will have one week to turn in the missing assignment for a maximum 75% of the credit. The second week, student can turn in the missing assignment for a maximum of 50% of the credit. o Students will be able to make corrections to assignments and re-take tests and quizzes. Students have one week to earn 75% of the credit back. o If there are extenuating circumstances, other arrangements can be made. Parental or guardian contact if that is the case. 3 Classroom procedures Entering the classroom As you enter the class you should collect a book and your binder and turn in your homework. Go directly to your seat, place your belongings beneath your desk, and start your warm-up. Tardy to class You are tardy to class if you walk in once the bell has rung. Please come in quietly, place your pass on my desk, quickly collect needed materials, have a seat and start your warm-up. Turning in assignments / graded assignments Homework should be turned in at the beginning of class to the appropriate tray on the teacher s desk. Homework should be in the tray before the warm-up is completed. Classwork should be turned into the assigned tray once you have completed your work. Graded work will be passed back to you periodically. It will be your responsibility to save your work in case a question arises about your grade. I recommend you keep graded work in your binder until at least the end of each nine weeks. Finding out your grades You should be able to track your grades online on a daily basis. If you would like to know your grade you will have to ask the teacher at the end of class once you have completed your work. Progress reports will be handed out during the nine weeks. Ending class You must pick up your work area. Put away any materials that belong in the classroom. Organize and clean up the classroom, including textbooks. This must be done before the bell rings. The teacher will make final announcements and dismiss you once the bell rings. The class will not be dismissed until the class is clean and everyone is in their assigned seat. 3
