3 Student Signature Date Parent Signature Date Longview High School International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Syllabus for One Year Math SL Student: Grade: : Mathematics Standard Level 1 Year Teacher: Larry Cunningham Description: The IB Mathematics Standard Level is designed to educate students with a sound mathematical background that will prepare them to study university subjects which incorporate mathematics to a moderate level such as chemistry, economics, psychology, or business. The pace of the one year course will be demanding. The course will expose students to a wide variety of mathematical concepts and ask them to put those concepts together using logical methods. The course will demonstrate links between different areas of mathematics as well as show how math can be used as a tool to our understanding of events in the natural world. Students will explore how mathematics can be applied in different situations, construct appropriate models, and offer suitable solutions. Students will be asked to explain and thoroughly justify their observations using words, charts, and graphs. Topics: Outcomes: Students in the Mathematics SL One Year Class will study functions and the algebra related to them. There will be detailed study of rational, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, including the unit circle and radian measure. Students will also study arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, the binomial expansion, matrices, and vectors in both 2 and 3 dimensions. Students will then study concepts of statistics, probability, and calculus. Upon completion of the Mathematics SL course, students will be able to: 1. Think logically, critically, and creatively 2. Appreciate the elegance, usefulness, and power of mathematics 3. Demonstrate patience and persistence in solving problems 4. Appreciate the multicultural and historical perspectives of mathematics 5. Read, interpret and solve problems using appropriate mathematical terminology 6. Organize and present information and data in tabular, graphical, written, and/or diagrammatic forms 7. Know and use appropriate mathematical notation and terminology. Formulate a mathematical argument and communicate it clearly 9. Select and use appropriate mathematical strategies and techniques 10. Demonstrate an understanding of both the significance and the reasonableness of results 11. Recognize patterns and structures in a variety of situations and make generalizations 12. 4 Assessment: 13. Use appropriate technological devices as mathematical tools 14. Demonstrate an understanding of and the appropriate use of mathematical modeling IB Assessment 20% - Internal Assessment A collection of two pieces of work assigned by the teacher and completed by the student during the course. The pieces of work must be based on different areas of the syllabus and represent the two types of tasks: mathematical investigation mathematical modeling. The portfolio is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IBO. This assessment will be practiced during year one and will be assessed in year two. 0% - External Assessment This assessment will be given at the end of the second year and will be externally graded by the IBO. Paper 1 40% (no calculator) Section A 20% Short response questions based on the whole syllabus Section B 20% Extended response questions based on the whole syllabus Paper 2 40% (Graphing Calculator Required) Section A 20% Short response questions based on the whole syllabus Section B 20% Extended response questions based on the whole syllabus Throughout the course there will be an emphasis on IB strategies and IB marking schemes. Grades may include quizzes, tests, homework, projects, research and presentations. The course will be designed so that students will have the best opportunity to be successful on the IB exam.
