All assignments will be corrected and returned, but only 2-4 of the ten daily lessons will be recorded in the grade book. Daily work is to be a learning experience without undue pressure.

2 Shurley English Level 3 Topics to be covered and skills mastered The 50 states: names, locations, capitals, postal codes, year admitted to Union, and state nickname. The 8 parts of speech and how to properly classify and label a sentence. Continual vocabulary improvement with a Definition Book containing synonyms and antonyms. When to use a/an, when to say the as thee or thuh, finding simple/complete subjects and predicates, ending punctuation, capitalization and punctuation rules, the 4 types of sentences, synonyms and antonyms, common and proper nouns, subject/verb agreement, singular and plural, making nouns possessive, homonyms, irregular verbs, editing a checklist, identify complete sentences and sentence fragments, simple sentence with compound parts, run-on sentence, linking verbs, similes and metaphors, quotations, verb tenses, double negatives, and alphabetizing. Writing Journaling, revising and editing, expository writing, writing definitions, two- and three-point paragraphs, changing plural categories to singular points, standard and time-order forms, topic sentence, essay, 3 paragraph essay, persuasive essay, friendly letter, business letter, parts of an envelope, narrative, writing with dialogue and without dialogue, and descriptive writing. Classwork Tests There will be a test each week on Friday, which will contain sections on classifying sentences, the vocabulary words that have been covered that week and previous weeks, sections containing the main skill learned that week, and a journal entry. There will be several classwork assignments each week, along with several writing assignments. Anything that is not completed in class will be homework. Grading Procedures Because Shurley English builds concepts very gradually, the tests provide a very accurate assessment of how your child is grasping the concepts. Effectively studying for the test includes looking over graded homework and studying vocabulary words and state notecards. The most effective way, though, is to work hard to understand in class. There will be 4-5 grades taken per week: 1 test grade taken on Friday, 1 writing grade once we get to Chapter 4 (based on final draft), and 2-3 workbook grades.

3 Bible Text Used God s Great Covenant: A Bible Course for Children Old Testament 2: 1 Samuel to Malachi Hymns Praise Him! Praise Him! O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go Praise to the Lord, The Almighty Hark, the Herald Angels Sing All Hail the Power of Jesus Name Grace Greater than All Our Sin Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed? There is a Fountain Scripture Memory Each chapter of the textbook contains a portion of scripture to be memorized for the week. Memorization of these verses and/or passages will be graded weekly on Wednesday morning. At various times during the year we will also memorize a chapter at a time. Catechism Using the Westminster Shorter Catechism, we will cover and memorize the first 40 questions, beginning with What is the chief end of man? and ending with, What did God at first reveal to man for the rule of his obedience? Memorization of the Catechism will be graded on Wednesday morning as well. Chapel Every Thursday morning, a pastor or minister will come and share God s truth with us during Chapel. During this time the class will also recite the catechism and scripture memory that they memorized for the week. A behavior grade will be taken at this time. Weekly Structure Friday Weekend Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Our new chapter each week will begin on Friday. This day we will read the portion of scripture from the Bible that our chapter is over. We will read over the catechism question for the first time and discuss it. Afterwards we will pray together. Over the weekend the student will have their binder at home, so if you would like to have them read the chapter Story Time to you, that would be wonderful. This would also be a great time to practice scripture memory & catechism with them. No homework for Bible over the weekend. During class Monday we will read the Story Time section of the chapter, sing our hymn, practice reciting our catechism and memory verse, and pray together. The chapter worksheet will be homework on Monday night. Chapter worksheet is due Tuesday morning. During Bible time we will go over the worksheet together, practice our scripture memory and catechism, sing our hymn, and pray together. I will grade the worksheet during PE that afternoon and return the graded worksheet for your child to study. On Wednesday the students will be assessed over the week s chapter. They will take the end-of-chapter quiz, and I will assess the each student s recitation of the memory verse and catechism. Chapel is from 8:30-9:00. A behavior grade will be taken, with a 10/10 being the best. Homework & Tests Five grades will be taken each week: two memorization grades, one behavior grade, one homework grade, and one assessment/quiz grade.

4 History Text Used The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child Volume 2: The Middle Ages From the Fall of Rome to the Rise of the Renaissance Weekly Structure New chapters will be introduced on Thursday of each week. Each chapter has 1-4 sections that will be read and covered in totality by Monday. Each Tuesday will be a review day prior to the test. Worksheets and activities will be done Thursday through the following Tuesday. Grading There will be 3-5 grades per week, with 1 grade being the assessment each Wednesday. There will typically be 1 participation grade for the week, and 1 or 2 grades for the quality of work on activities. Books Read throughout the year: Reading The Hobbit (read aloud) Homer Price Encyclopedia Brown Pilgrim s Progress (read aloud) Because of Winn Dixie (read aloud) Treasure Island (read aloud) The Whipping Boy Pippi Longstocking Adam of the Road (read aloud) Prince Caspian Farmer Boy Robin Hood (read aloud) Sarah, Plain and Tall The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe A large portion of time each student s day will be reading or being read to. Each book will take several weeks to finish in class. There will be many activities that will accompany the reading each day that will help solidify understanding. Each week a small assessment will be given to gauge understanding. At the conclusion of each book there will also be a cumulative assessment. Spelling We will be using "A Reason For Spelling curriculum. A placement test will be give the first week of school, and then your student will be put with the appropriate level. There will be 11 short activities for each week of spelling words. Tests will be given each Friday.

5 Classical Writing Aesop 3 rd Grade: Student workbook A 4 th Grade: Student Workbook B Theory All the grammar needed at this level is taught in the Aesop text. Using a gentle, sequential approach, your students will cover capitalization and punctuation, sentence classification, and direct and indirect quotations. They will be introduced to the parts of speech and learn the elementary rules of correct usage. Analysis and Imitation In Aesop, we teach a four day routine for analysis and imitation. Each day we work with the weekly model (a fable or story) practice writing. Day 1: Reading and Comprehension Day 2: Spelling and Vocabulary Day 3: Grammar Day 4: Copywork and Dictation One of our main goals in using this method is to help your students begin to develop copia a variety of ways to express the same thought. Practice (Writing Projects) Each week, students will write a retelling of the weekly model. They will learn to retell a story in chronological order, and to amplify it by adding dialogue and descriptive details. From the beginning, they will learn that writing is a process, and that editing is part of that process. Editing routines are taught step-by-step to make this process easy. Our student workbooks include editing checklists for each week s writing project. These lists also help teachers evaluate their students' progress.

Unit assessments will be held once the whole unit has been completed. If there is a unit assessment, it will be held on a Tuesday or Friday as well.
