2 CHOICE

3 A choice activity is very simple the teacher asks a question and specifies a choice of multiple responses. It can be useful as a quick poll to stimulate thinking about a topic; to allow the class to vote on a direction for the course; or to gather research consent. Choice requires some preparation time for creating your activity and thinking about what results you would like to achieve, but your participation with activity itself is likely to be minimal. CHOICE FEATURES

4 Only one question or Choice allowed. Many answers possible. Limits may be set on each answer. Can select whether to publish results to students or not and when to publish. Choose whether results are anonymous or not. Choose whether to have a column for unanswered. Can allow choice to be updated. CHOICE FEATURES

5 CREATIVE USES OF CHOICE A simple question to answer, to kick start an in-class discussion. A question left unanswered from a lesson - that needs an answer. Now students can answer it after class.

6 CREATIVE USES OF CHOICE As assessment about a lesson ask a short question to test for comprehension. Poll students on aspects of class (did you like the new seating arrangement? Do you like the notes in PowerPoint or Word format?)

7 CREATIVE USES OF CHOICE Planning a class trip? Use Choice to find out information such as initial commitment from students to attend, and then later their their bus choices and hotel roommates, t-shirt sizes, etc. VOTING (mock or real) Students can participate in elections. Use anonymous publishing after the close of the choice. Automatic results no ballot counting Can also be used for mock elections.

8 CREATIVE USES OF CHOICE Ask a question that might help in forming groups for projects. (example: Have you been to a foreign country? Do you have experience with the topic?) Research Project Task List List the steps for a project as choices in a CHOICE activity. Students can update the choice as they complete each step. Fast and easy monitoring for teacher and students.

9 CREATIVE USES OF CHOICE Register for a group If you are having a group project and want the students to choose which group they want to be in, make a choice activity. The teacher can decide to limit the number that can register in each group. (for example, if you are having a debate, students can choose to be pro or con) AGREEMENT User agreements, assignment criteria, anything that students need to take responsibility for reading and understanding Choice allows teachers to track who have said they read and understand. For instance, to make sure they ve read the syllabus or that they will abide by the Honor Code.

10 QUIZZES

11 The Quiz activity module allows the teacher to design and build quizzes consisting of a large variety of Question types, including multiple choice, true-false, and short answer questions. These questions are kept in the Question bank and can be reused in different quizzes. QUIZ FEATURES

12 Uses a question bank that allows sharing of questions across the course or the Moodle site. Allows manual grading (or grade overrides) Permits question and answers to be shuffled Item analysis QUIZ FEATURES

13 CREATIVE USES OF QUIZ CHECKLISTS Checklists for projects, teaching units, program skills. The teacher can make it so the students can re-take the quiz an unlimited number of times. Building Speed Teacher builds a quiz of knowledge in course. (could be vocabulary, basic skills, etc.) Practice test is timed with unlimited retakes. Students practice the test with teacher checking their time. (Competing against self)

14 CREATIVE USES OF QUIZ RANDOM QUESTIONS To use random selected question, must put the questions into the same category. Different question will be selected each time a student takes the quiz. Will not allow the same question twice in the same quiz. SHUFFLE QUESTIONS Shuffles the questions for a quiz each student gets a different order of questions (same questions).

16 Allows participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary. Glossary can be used in many ways. The entries can be searched or browsed in different formats. A glossary can be a collaborative activity or be restricted to entries made by the teacher. Entries can be put in categories. The auto-linking feature will highlight any word in the course which is located in the glossary. GLOSSARY FEATURES

17 Two main types: Main and Secondary Can be teacher only or students Upload of files or pictures allowed only Encyclopedia format shows pictures in the entry. Searchable in several ways May restrict duplicate entries Comments may be allowed Easily shareable with import/export feature Can use the random glossary entry block to show one entry on the course home page (changes at a time increment sent by teacher) GLOSSARY FEATURES

20 CREATIVE USES OF GLOSSARY COLLABORATIVE WORK Set up the Glossary. Click on the Locally Assign Roles at the top of the set up screen. Assign students the teacher role so they can go in and edit the entries. Use Encyclopedia format if you want students to be able to upload a picture and show it in the entry. Make sure the edit always is set to yes. When the project is completed, you can reset the glossary settings to edit always: no and take the students out of the locally assigned roles as teachers.

Overview of Topic Community Directory WHAT HAPPENED IN THE YEAR Students pick a year and enter important events in history for that year. No duplicate entries are allowed. May enter events forgotten by another student with comments.

23 WIKI

24 A wiki is a collection of collaboratively authored web pages. A wiki starts with one front page. Students can edit the page or add more pages to the wiki by creating links to new pages that don t yet exist. In Moodle, wikis can be a powerful tool for collaborative work. The entire class can edit a document together, or you can create group wikis which are only editable by group members. WIKI FEATURES

25 CREATIVE USES OF WIKIS BRAINSTORMING When a student adds new links to a wiki, new pages are created. If a student is working on a page and wants to explore a different topic later, by adding a link and creating a new page, that topic can be explored or added to at a later date by that student or another student in the group similar to a big white sheet and a marker pen. GROUP LECTURE NOTES It is easy to miss important points in a lecture so using a wiki is a good way to share information with each other. Students can also combine all their notes from different lectures and create a good resource for revision. You can also engage with the content to make sure that students have understood the key points.

26 CREATIVE USES OF WIKIS GROUP PROJECT A wiki is a space for students to record research and create outlines for group projects. CLASS NOTES REVISION The teacher sets up the wiki and makes links for each chapter of the course and the name of a student(s) after it. Each student takes a section of the course and summarizes it, generating an entire set of course notes. The teacher will probably have to monitor and edit the entries.

27 CHAT

28 The chat activity module allows participants to have a real-time synchronous discussion in a Moodle course. This is a useful way to get a different understanding of each other and the topic being discussed the mode of using a chat room is quite different from the asynchronous forums. The Chat module contains a number of features for managing and reviewing chat discussions. CHAT FEATURES

29 CREATIVE USES OF CHAT Using the live chat function of Moodle in the classroom will allow learners to communicate about a classroom-based task, share ideas, links and together solve problems. (groups can schedule times to chat about their project) The chat can be "saved" and "recorded" can be used as evidence for portfolios or similar.

30 ONLINE ASSIGNMENT

31 This assignment type asks users to compose and edit text, using the normal editing tools. The online text assignment can be set up to allow learners to compose, revise and edit over time or such that the learner only has one opportunity to enter his or her response. Furthermore, with the online assignment, instructors can grade the work online and even edit and/or provide comments within the learner s work. ONLINE ASSIGNMENT FEATURES

32 CREATIVE USES OF ONLINE ASSIGNMENT REFLECTION An online assignment where students are allowed unlimited attempts with no opening or closing date PERSONAL LEARNING SELF- ASSESSMENT FREE spaces set up by the teacher for students to reflect at moments of their own choosing within a course. It is perfectly acceptable to make use of the online text assignment as a private space for personal learning and reflection in some instances (ie. No teacher feedback) and as a collaborative space between teacher and student in others (ie. teacher feedback, comments and/or short discussions)

33 LESSON

34 The lesson module presents a series of HTML pages to the student, who is usually asked to make some sort of choice underneath the content area. The choice will send them to a specific page in the Lesson. In a Lesson page's simplest form, the student can select a continue button at the bottom of the page, which will send them to the next page in the Lesson. The significant difference between a Lesson and other activity modules available in Moodle comes from its adaptive ability. With this tool, each choice the students makes, can show a different teacher response/comment and send the student to a different page in the lesson. Thus with planning, the Lesson module can customize the presentation of content and questions to each student, with no further action required by the teacher. LESSON FEATURES

35 Very structured. Allows the delivery of content and questions that are answered to show learning. Complicated to set up, but once finished can be very helpful as the content and questions go together. LESSON FEATURES

36 CREATIVE USES OF A LESSON Test for understanding as they go and can send them back to slides if they get an answer wrong. Adaptable students can proceed at their own rate
