Authority of Teacher Account Teachers can use this account to: Add assignments as curricula homework or extra exercises for students Form students groups for the ease of assigning tasks Develop their own teaching materials using a variety of authoring tools Assess and monitor student progress with rubrics Communicate with students with the communication tools Send gifts to students using the Awarding System Some functions are NOT available for teachers, including: Building/modifying/copying curricula User account management 3

5 5. Focus of the Week To check the materials/assignments available in a given week Including a link to check submission status of students assignments Including a route to check and monitor the discussion thread of the current week Step 1. This is the first page seen after English subject is chosen. Choose a class to view the materials available in the week. In this case, class 1A is chosen for demonstration. Step 2. These are the materials found in a particular curriculum. The materials available in the week are tabulated in the corresponding categories. Click on the titles to expand the list. Check the materials by clicking on the links. The following steps will show the way to update curriculum schedule in the in order for the materials to be displayed in Focus of the Week. 4

6 Step 3. Place mouse over Curriculum ; click Curriculum Management. Choose a curriculum to manage e.g. the curriculum in the red rectangle. Step 4. Choose a class to edit e.g. Pick Class 1A Step 5. This is the unexpanded curriculum tree. Click on the plus button to expand the tree and choose a branch to update schedule to Focus of the Week. 5

7 Step 6. To update the branch, click on the calendar (Box ONE) and choose a date in Box TWO. Click Update to confirm (Box THREE). A yellow box with The lesson information has been updated will be seen on the top right hand corner of the page. (Box FOUR) Step 8. Repeat Step 1 and 2. (Click Focus of the Week ; Choose Class 1A ) You will see the materials in the curriculum branch of which the date has been updated is shown here (Box ONE). 6

Checking and Assigning Homework Assign homework from the curriculum tree (Section 6.1) OR directly in Homework (Section 6.2) Check and grade the homework submitted by students 6.1 Assigning Homework from the Curriculum Tree This applies to the case in which the homework is already in the curriculum and ready to be assigned Step 1. Place mouse over Curriculum ; click Curriculum Management. Choose a curriculum to manage e.g. the curriculum in the red rectangle. Step 2. Choose a class to edit e.g. Pick Class 1A 7

9 Step 3. Click on the plus button to expand the tree and choose a branch where there are assignments available. Check the tick box and click Assign as Homework. Step 4. Upon clicking Assign as Homework, users are directed to this page. Assign the start and end date for the display of the material; choose the class(es) and click on the button in box THREE. Particular groups can also be selected to be assigned homework or materials. The assigned homework will be seen in Homework. (See Section 3 in this manual) 8

10 6.2 Assigning Homework Directly from Homework This is done when teachers wish to assign extra materials to students Step 1. Click Homework and choose Assign Homework. Select the assignment date by click on the calendar; then choose the class(es) you wish to add. When finished, click Add. Step 2. The materials can be found by keying in the key words, choosing the level and/or the material type. The match(es) will be shown in the table. Select the material(s) by checking the tick box, then click Select. Step 3. Currently the selected material is assigned to 1A. Check the tick box in Box ONE if you wish to assign the material to the all the Primary One classes. Remove material(s) by clicking Box TWO; change the passing score for submission. (Box THREE) Click Box FOUR to confirm. (Note: You can select other materials by search and keep all of them in the table Selected Homework before assigning to students.) 9

11 6.3 Checking homework Teachers can check the submission status of a certain assignment Teachers can give scores to some of the assignments, e.g. writing, story creator etc. Step 1. Click Homework, and Check Homework. Either type the homework name, choose the class and date. Then click Search. Click on the homework name in the table to view the material. Click on the number under Submission to check students submission. Teachers can print the report of the homework assigned in the specified period. Step 2. Click Submission name list to show the students who have handed in their assignments. Check the box next to Hide submitted students if you wish to hide the students who have submitted their homework. Step 3. In the submission name list, students having submitted assignments are displayed in the table with the scores gained in the exercise. Click on the score to check the answers the student has chosen in the exercise. 10

12 Note: If students handed in Writing or Story creator assignments (as shown in this picture), teachers have to assign scores for them. Extra tip: You can have a quick review on the assigned homework in Assign Homework. Check Ordered by Start Date and click on the Class Name (e.g. 1A). Then you will have a list of the homework you have assigned * By clicking Print Report, you get a list of the assigned homework in PDF format. 7. Curriculum Management Scheduling personal teaching tasks Adding personalized content Adding or amending curriculum trees are school admin functions only Step 1. Place mouse over Curriculum ; click Curriculum Management. 11

13 Step 2. Choose a curriculum to manage e.g. the curriculum in the red box. Step 3. Choose a class to edit e.g. Pick Class 1A Step 4. This is a part of the curriculum tree. Click on a branch on the left, then click Add to add materials. 12

14 Step 5. Choose the level of the materials; click on the checkbox to indicate material type; uncheck Search own materials only and click Search. (Use Key Word search if material names are known; Click Back to return to the curriculum tree) Step 6. Click on the tick box to choose the exercise; click Add to add the checked materials to the curriculum. To preview materials, click on the link (Box TWO). A new page with the exercise will pop up. 8. Content Management Teachers can search for materials for review and modification Teachers can use the authoring tools to create their own exercises 13

15 8.1 Searching for Materials Step 1. Type in the keywords of the resources, select Material Type, uncheck the tick box next to Search own materials only. Then click Advanced Search. Step 2. There are more detailed search criteria in Advanced Search. Here Resources is used as an example. Select Category and then click Search. Note: different material types have different search criteria in Advanced Search. Step 3. Click on the resource name to review; Click on the cross or the notepad icons (as seen in the cell next to the resource name) to delete or edit the resource respectively. Note: teachers can only modify the materials of their own. 14

16 8.2 Adding materials with Authoring Tools This section covers 7 types of materials generally used in curricula: 1. Resources 2. Exercise 3. Test 4. Polling 5. Link 6. Phrasal Verb 7. Idiom The following are the common features shared in the materials when information about the materials are input: Name, Description, Level and Sharing Level Fields with asterisks (*) are required fields. For more input instructions, place mouse over the blue icon. Click Submit ; or click Reset to start over Uploading Resources Teachers can upload materials like worksheets for students to download Resources include MS Office files, pictures, short audio and video clips etc. 15

17 Step 1. Click Content Management ; then click Add Material. Step 2. In this page, click Resources to enter the uploading interface. Step 3. Fill in all the information as required. Note that the items with asterisks (*) are the required fields. Place mouse over the blue information icon (Box ONE) for more instructions. Click on the folder in Box TWO to upload resources. 16

18 Step 4. Choose Upload Resources File then click Browse (Box ONE) to open the dialog box as seen in the picture. Choose the file you wish to upload; then click Open. Click Upload to confirm your choice. Note: You can only upload ONE file under each resource. Step 5. If uploading is successful, a message Already uploaded is shown. Select the sharing level. In this demonstration, Not share is chosen, meaning the resource is not shared with other schools. Click Submit to confirm the upload procedures. Step 6. Having finished uploading, you are redirected to the Material Management search interface for checking and editing the uploaded resources Uploading Exercise Exercise question types: Fill in the blanks and Multiple Choice Skill-based categories: General, Cloze, Comprehension 17

19 Phonics, Listening and Proofreading are out of the scope of this workshop This is the information page for all kinds of exercises. Fill the fields as detailed as possible to facilitate searching. Teachers can upload pictures or select pictures from Graphic Gallery as exercise covers. Draft is checked as the exercise is not yet made available for students access. The information page as seen in Add Exercise 18

20 General exercises ( N/A ) Step 1. Choose N/A in Skill Based Category in the information page. Choose either Fill in the Blanks or Multiple Choice Fill the fields, choose the sharing level and (un)check Self Learn Material. Then click Next. You can either add questions from the question pool (Box ONE) or add questions directly. Step 2. (Adding questions from pool) Type the keywords to search for suitable questions. (Un)check Show my questions only then click Search. Check the boxes of the questions you wish to add to the exercise, and then click on Select. 19

21 Step 3. You can repeat Step 2 to add more questions. Click Remove to discard the unwanted questions. Click Confirm to finish. Step 4. (Adding questions directly) Upload images for the questions (if any). Choose the number of possible answers, check the radio box (MC) or type the correct answer(s)(fib). Click Submit. Step 5. When adding questions is finished, click Submit at the bottom of the page 20

22 Step 6. The exercise will immediately appear in Material Management for edit and review Cloze Passage ( Cloze ) Step 1 Choose Cloze in Skill Based Category in the information page. Choose either Fill in the Blanks or Multiple Choice Fill the fields, choose the sharing level and (un)check Self Learn Material. Then click Next. Click Add questions directly if you do not have any cloze passages in the pool. Otherwise, choose a cloze from the pool and edit it in Step 2. Then you will see a page where you can copy your cloze passage to the blank space as shown in the next page: Step 2. (Adding questions directly) Upload the image file (if any) Copy the passage. Provide the title for the cloze passage, and follow the instruction to add question markers to the cloze. Click Confirm to fill/edit questions. Click on the question marker to modify the answer(s). When finished editing the passage, click Complete at the bottom of the page. 21

23 Step 3. When there are no other changes, click Submit and the exercise will appear in Material Management for viewing and modification Comprehension Step 1 Choose Comprehension in Skill Based Category in the information page. Choose either Fill in the Blanks or Multiple Choice Fill the fields, choose the sharing level and (un)check Self Learn Material. Then click Next. Click Add questions directly if you do not have any comprehension exercises in the pool. Otherwise, choose a passage from the pool and edit it in Step 2. Then you will see a page where you can copy your passage to the blank space as shown in the next page: (Page Turned Over) 22

24 Step 2. (Adding questions directly) Upload the image file (if any) Copy the passage. Provide the title for the passage. Step 3. When you finished adding the passage, click Add questions.. 23

25 Step 4. Upload images for the questions (if any). Choose the number of possible answers, check the radio box (MC) or type the correct answer(s)(fib). Click Submit. Step 5. Add more questions accordingly, and click Complete to go to the next page. Step 6. When there are no other changes, click Submit and the exercise will appear in Material Management for viewing and modification. 24

26 8.2.3 Uploading Tests Teachers can devise tests including sections of multiple exercise and skill-based types The test is timed and can only be done once Step 1. Type the name of the test. Here you can set how many sections there would be in the test. Set the timer, and (un)check Ready for assignment, and then click Submit. Step 2. Choose to add questions directly or from the pool, then click Go. Perform the steps of adding exercises as instructed in When all the test materials are added, click Submit. Step 3. This page will be shown to indicate the test being created successfully. Click on the line to modify or review the test in Content Management. 25

27 8.2.4 Uploading Polling Enhancing interaction among teachers and students and/or parents In the polling page, fill in the fields as detailed as possible. You can add more options in the polling by clicking Add Option. Set the relevant topic type. Restrain voters right by choosing the question type and vote right. Then choose the class(es) having the right to vote. Select the sharing level and click Submit. 26

28 After the polling being created successfully, you can check the polling in Polling Management, where you can click View to view the polling results. You can also delete the polling by checking the box in red, and clicking Delete selected Uploading Book Links To provide external links for content enrichment Each book link includes multiple choice or fill in the blanks questions to consolidate knowledge Step 1. Fill in all the fields to facilitate search. Please note that Name is the title of the website, not the hyperlink. Put the hyperlink in URL. If you do not have any image file as cover, check No Cover. When finished, click Submit. 27

29 Step 2. After Submit, you need to input 5 MC or FIB questions to finish the procedure. You can hint at the answer by typing the hints in Hints. Click Submit. Step 3. After inputting 5 questions, you have finished uploading a link. You can search for the link in Content Management for modification. Choose Book Link Questions in Content Management to add more questions. You are then directed to Book Link Exercise Management. Click 1. Step 4. Search the book link by filling in the fields as provided. Click on the URL Name to edit questions (Box ONE). Go to Step 5. You can also review the book link and questions by clicking View (Box TWO). 28

30 Step 5. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the link Add a new question. Repeat the procedure in Step 2 to add questions. Click Back to return to Step 4. Step 6. You can continue to add questions, or return to the book (the screen dump in Step 5) to review the questions. 29

31 8.2.6 Uploading Phrasal Verbs and Idioms Adding phrasal verbs Step 1. Input the meaning of the phrasal verb in Description. Click Submit to finish uploading. Step 2. Add additional English and Chinese explanations with examples, audio and image files if necessary. Click Update at the bottom of the page to finish. Phrasal verbs can be assigned to students as tasks (For assigning tasks and readings, please see Section 4.) Adding idioms Step 1. Add the English idiom along with the Chinese equivalent (if there is not any, briefly describe the idiom). Click Submit to finish. Idioms are shown on the student account interface at random. 30

32 9. Assessment and Report Teachers can check students usage of the system and their progress They can also generate reports on their classes homework statistics 10. Communications Including Polling, Bulletin Board, Sharing, Private Message, News Polling You can utilize, create and manage polling materials in one page (Box ONE to THREE) In the table as shown in the screen dump, note the icons under the column Participants show who can take part in the polling. Click on the topics to check the polling results Bulletin Board Step 1. There are four bulletin boards for different levels: Homework, School, Public and Teacher. Click on the class in Homework to see and take part in the discussion threads. 31

33 Step 2. In the bulletin board, you can click on the title to enter the discussion thread. You can click Add Message to start a new discussion topic. Click Back to return to Step 1. Step 3. In the discussion thread, you can perform either of the following actions: Quick Reply: reply to the discussion topic Response: response to the reply threads to the topic Comment: commenting on students response. Available for teachers only. PM: sending a private message to a particular student. Or you can simply reply to the thread at the bottom of the page, and click Reply to send your message. 32

34 Sharing Select a form (Primary 1 in this example). This screen dump shows the main sharing page. As a teacher, you have the authority to approve students sharing. Click on Go to sharing approval menu to approve pending sharings. Private Message This feature allows you to send private messages to individual students or specific groups you assign. News This shows the news updates you and your school have published. You can add news in Content Management. The End of the Manual Thank you very much! 33
