Includes study and application of team communication and use of technology to facilitate the communication process. Prerequisites: 6 hours from English 131, 132, 133, or 235 and basic keyboarding skills. Textbooks and Materials Lehman, C.M., & DuFrene, D.D. ( ). BCOM2. South-Western, Cengage Learning. ISBN-13: or ISBN-10: This is a required softback hard copy text. References to text by page number will be provided. The book includes review cards and a code for access to a web site with some electronic materials. You will only have access to these electronic materials if you purchase a new student textbook. Other textbooks by these authors will not have the same arrangement and will cause confusion for students. USB Flash drive, 2 gig or higher. To use for storage of documents and when working with teams. Software to Be Used in the Course For this course all documents and assignments will be completed using Microsoft Word. Assignments submitted in Microsoft Works, WordPerfect, or as pdf or graphics files will not be accepted your score on those assignments will be zero. In addition, there will be several assignments using Microsoft Powerpoint. You will also need software to read Powerpoint slides if you do not have the software. If you do not have Microsoft Word or Microsoft Powerpoint on your computer, you should

3 plan to use the software in an on-campus computer lab or some other location where you have access to such software. You will need to download Acrobat Reader to review some graded assignments. If you prefer to purchase software for your computer instead, contact the bookstore. In order to do the Chats, you may need to upload some software. If you have any difficulties, click on the icon I Need Techno Help for assistance. Equipment for the Course You will need easy and reliable access to the Internet as you should check in to the course on a daily basis. You will need easy access to the software mentioned above. You will need to post your oral video presentation on You-Tube, so you will need appropriate equipment to video your presentation such as a webcam, a cell phone, a video camera in a format that can be loaded to You-Tube. FINAL EXAM Final exam will be available on at 6 a.m. on Sunday, May 8. You must finish the exam (it will be timed) by 11 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10. To participate effectively in groups with emphasis on listening, critical and reflective thinking, and responding. To understand and apply basic principles of critical thinking, problem solving, and technical proficiency in the development of exposition and argument. To develop the ability to research and write a documented paper and/or to give an oral presentation. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Apply business communication strategies and principles to prepare effective communication for domestic and international business situations. 2. Identify ethical, legal, cultural, and global issues affecting business communication.

4 3. Utilize analytical and problem solving skills typical in business communication. 4. Select appropriate organizational formats and channels used in developing and presenting business messages. 5. Create and revise accurate business documents using computer technology. 6. Communicate electronically (i.e., , chat, messenger, discussion boards, other). 7. Deliver an effective oral business presentation. 8. Access and utilize business information obtained from electronic and/or printed sources. 9. Apply effective teamwork and collaboration skills. Course Methods: The following methods may be used in the course: chats, discussions, journals, online assignments, online exams, online quizzes, creating and editing documents, team report, individual oral presentation, and electronic mail. Students will use Blackboard to check progress in course grades as well as for all other course aspects. Class Procedures Teams. Students will be randomly assigned to teams by Blackboard.. Teams will have three or four members depending on class enrollment. Your involvement in the team is important. Your individual oral presentation on YouTube will be evaluated by your team members as well as yourself. You will also be involved in preparation of a team written research report. Participation in a team is not an option, it is a requirement. The official channel of communication for your team will be the on Blackboard. Use this approach to send attachments and communicate with each other. You should not make your team chase you around. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to keep in touch with your team about your activities. You should record at least TWO interactions per week on your. An interaction can be a question, answering another team member s question, or providing information for your team. A team member who is not performing effectively in the team may be FIRED from the team with consultation from the instructor. The team member may be fired by the team or by the instructor. The primary causes for firing include invisibility (no one has communicated with or heard from the person) or nonperformance (person does not do his/her work in a timely manner). The discussion board will be examined to see what contributions the team member has made to the team. To institute the firing, the team should write a memo to the instructor with a copy to the team member. The instructor will make

5 the final decision. A fired team member is required to complete all team assignments alone in order to pass the course and will not earn any team points. A fired team member will not earn a higher score than the team on the project. For example, if the team earned a C on the written report, the highest grade the fired individual could earn would be a C. Your goal is to work with your team so that you are not fired. Oral Presentation You will be creating a four minute individual oral presentation and uploading it to YouTube so that your team members and instructor can see and evaluate the video. More details will follow. Chats The course will have five online CHATS. In the past most of the chats have lasted between 30 and 45 minutes although we can chat longer if we need to. You are required to participate in two of the five chat (Ten points each for two required chats).. You can earn bonus points for each additional chat you participate in (5 bonus points). If you are unable to attend the chat, a record of the chat will be posted online so you can view the discussion. I suggest you review the discussion as questions about pertinent course subjects are often discussed. The chats are scheduled on different days of the week and at different times so that you can find chats that you will be able to attend.. Professional courtesy. This class will be conducted in a professional manner. This means 1) submit work on TIME no excuses, 2) avoid profanity and/or offensive language in your communication, and 3) participate fully and courteously with your team members. In reference to courtesy to team members, do not send harassing s, texts, or messages using offensive language to team members. Such s may result in a reduction to the sender s grade. Joke assignments, using inappropriate or questionable content for oral presentations or written assignments may result in NO CREDIT or reduced credit for that assignment. If you have questions about what might be professional conduct, please contact me BEFORE you choose your approach to class assignments. In order to receive a passing grade, the student MUST complete a written formal report and must make the oral presentation as well as earning sufficient points to pass the course. Figuring Your Grade Go to MyGrades in Blackboard and see how many points you earned for each of the assignments indicated. Add up your points and divide them by the total number of points available at that time. For example, if your assigned points were 500 based on a total of 600 points completed at a certain point, you would have an average of 83.3%. Look at the scale below to determine that would be a grade of B.

Reports returned by this date Program learning outcomes define the knowledge, skills, and abilities students are expected to demonstrate upon completion of an academic program. These learning outcomes are regularly assessed to determine student learning and to evaluate overall program effectiveness. You may access the program learning outcomes for your major and particular courses at General Student Policies: Academic Integrity (A-9.1) Academic integrity is a responsibility of all university faculty and students. Faculty members promote academic integrity in multiple ways including instruction on the components of academic honesty, as well as abiding by university policy on penalties for cheating and plagiarism. Definition of Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes both cheating and plagiarism. Cheating includes but is not limited to (1) using or attempting to use unauthorized materials to aid in achieving a better grade on a component of a class; (2) the falsification or invention of any information, including citations, on an assigned exercise; and/or (3) helping or attempting to help another in an act of cheating or plagiarism. Plagiarism is presenting the words or ideas of another person as if they were your own. Examples of plagiarism are (1) submitting an assignment as if it were one's own work when, in fact, it is at least partly the work of another; (2) submitting a work that has been purchased or otherwise obtained from an Internet source or another source; and (3) incorporating the words or ideas of an author into one's paper without giving the author due credit. 10 Ordinarily, at the discretion of the instructor of record and with the approval of the academic chair/director, a grade of WH will be assigned only if the student cannot complete the course work because of unavoidable circumstances. Students must complete the work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which they receive a WH, or the grade automatically becomes an F. If students register for the same course in future terms the WH will automatically become an F and will be counted as a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point average. Students with Disabilities To obtain disability related accommodations, alternate formats and/or auxiliary aids, students with disabilities must contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS), Human Services Building, and Room 325, / (TDD) as early as possible in the semester. Once verified, ODS will notify the course instructor and outline the accommodation and/or auxiliary aids to be provided. Failure to request services in a timely manner may delay your accommodations. For additional information, go to Acceptable Student Behavior Classroom behavior should not interfere with the instructor s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to learn from the instructional program (see the Student Conduct Code, policy D-34.1). Unacceptable or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students who disrupt the learning environment may be asked to leave class and may be subject to judicial, academic, or other penalties. This prohibition applies to all instructional forums, including electronic, classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The instructor shall have full discretion over what behavior is appropriate/inappropriate in the classroom. Students who do not attend class regularly or who perform poorly on class projects/exams may be referred to the Early Alert Program.
