1 Winter 2015 Program Guide Mann students can explore interests or try something new with the MannPower Enrichment Programs, administered by the MannPower Team, part of the PTO. PLEASE direct questions to Registration will open on Sunday, November 30, 2:00pm, and close on Friday, December 12, All registrations are done through our on-line registration system ( Payments are accepted online by credit card or by check or cash in the school office. o Scholarships are available, simply contact the MannPower team. Make checks payable to Mann PTO. Payments are due upon registration, and once we apply your check to your registration, you will receive an confirmation of payment. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. No refunds will be issued after the first week of classes & classes may be canceled due to insufficient enrollment. 2 Clay (K-2 nd )) Min 6/Max 15 - Due to high demand and limited spots, we ask that kids only register for Clay Club one session per school year. Fun Run and Games (3 rd 5 th ) Min 12/Max 24 By Mr. Eng & Mrs. Wyman The Winter weather will cause most classes to be held in the gym, however, weather permitting we will go outside. In this class students will learn about a healthy lifestyle, teamwork, competition, and pushing themselves to their physical limits. These goals will be accomplished through running drills, cardio moves, and active games. Monopoly Club Jr. (K 2 nd ) Min 6/Max 15 By Mr. Jerkatis Held in Mr. Jerkatis Classroom - Room 114 Improve gaming skills with others in a supportive environment. Stratego Strategy Club (3 rd -5 th ) Min 6/Max 20 By Mr. Hayward Held in Mr. Hayward s Classroom Room 216D (5 th Grade Pod) Do you enjoy a game of strategy and fun? Join the Stratego Club! Students will first agree on the Mann School Rules, and then play fun filled games of Stratego against new opponents each week! Jerkatis/Serio Variety Pack (K-2 nd ) Min 12/Max 25 By Mr. Jerkatis & Ms. Serio Held in Mr. Jerkatis Classroom Room 114 Each week we will explore a variety of activities including crafts, board games, dance, reader's theatre, and math games. It will be a fantastic time! We hope you will sign-up! 2

3 Lego Robotics (4 th -5 th ) Min 10/Max 16 By Mr. Kaegi Held in Mr. Kaegi s Classroom Room 212 Robotics is a fun, yet challenging activity. Not only do the students work as a team, problem solve, and build the robot, but they program it as well. Using the Lego MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0 program, students will be asked to build and program robots for many different tasks. Simple tasks include having the robot move in a straight line or a circle. More advanced tasks will ask students to have the robot find and pickup an object or gather items and bring them to another area of the room. Cost: $90 Let s Move, Let s Dance (2 nd -5 th ) Min 6/Max 20 By Ms. Meierhoff Held in the Auditorium Do you begin a dance party when you hear a great song on the radio? It s important to get up and move everyday and a great way to do that is through dance. Join me, as I teach you simple choreography to fun songs, Mann favorites-like the Cha Cha Slide, and others! Los Chefs! (3 rd -5 th ) Min 12/Max 16 By Ms. Muñoz & Ms. Aguirre Held in the Teachers Lounge Experience some awesome Latin American flavors and learn how to make easy and delicious recipes. You will make and taste yummy dishes from Mexico, Argentina, El Salvador, Colombia and Spain! Cost: $95 Puzzle s Galore (K-2 nd ) Min 12/Max 24 By Mr. Eng & Ms. Cairns Held in Ms. Cairns Classroom Room 108 Do you like the challenge of a puzzle? Do you try different strategies to solve problems? Do you never give up? Then we have a club for you! We will try our hand at number, word, jigsaw, and 3-D Puzzles! Fantastic way to make friends, have fun, and grow your mind and spirit! Students Involved With Technology (3 rd -5 th ) Min 6/Max 15 By Ms. Labak Held in the Computer Lab Do you love technology and like to show others what you know? Then this class is for you! This class is open to students who are interested in presenting at the Students Involved With Technology Conference in Downers Grove on Saturday, February 21, 2015 from 8a-2p. Students will use the MannPower class time to explore and create something digitally using an ipad app or a tool on the web. Students will then present their digital creation and explain how they created it to other students at the conference. Various types of technology can be explored (digital storytelling, animation, various ipad apps, and more). Students may work solo or as a team (max 4 per team) and they may even qualify to win prizes at the conference! Cost: $90 (includes $25 Conference reg fee - covers a snack, lunch, and t-shirt, as well as hands on activities & competitions) Yoga (1 st -2 nd ) Min 12/Max 26 By Mrs. Wyman & Mrs. Pecora Yoga is non-competitive and fun! We hope to foster movement, music, instruction, fitness, fun, and calming techniques, and it has great educational benefits too! Please bring your own yoga mat or beach towel to class! 3

4 After School Basketball (3 rd -5 th ) Min 10/Max 30 By 3Point Athletics Wednesdays ~ 2:00 3:00 p.m. the weeks of Jan. 7 to Mar. 11 (9 classes) No class: Wednesday, Feb. 11 Come out & play! (Now more team/game play!) Come join the knowledgeable and energetic 3Point staff as they conduct these organized basketball clinics right in the school gym for your children. Kids have fun learning the fundamentals of the game as participants are divided by age & skill level for organized team play, fun contests, and other basketball classics like dribble tag, knockout, & steal the bacon. Our instructors stress the positive rewards and feelings that come from accomplishment both on and off the court. After School Basketball is PRODUCTIVE, POSITIVE, & FUN!! Cost: $100 Board Games Galore (K-2 nd ) Min 6/Max 20 By Ms. Weck Held in Ms. Weck s Classroom Room 306 Ms Weck are bonkers for board games! Join us on Thursday afternoons for some fun times while getting to know other Mustangs from Mann School. Chess Club Beginners - Max 20 By Mr. Kaegi Held in Mr. Kaegi s Classroom Room 212 This class is ideal for students who are new to chess or who are still beginners. Learn the basic rules and play games with others at your own level in a non-competitive environment Chess Club Intermediate/Advanced Min 15/Max 50 Mr. Hayward & Mr. Eng Held in the 5 th Grade Pod on 2 nd Floor Hayward & Eng s Classrooms For those who already understand the rules of chess, Int. and Adv. Chess offers students the opportunity to learn more about the game of chess and improve skills and strategy, while playing friendly games and competing at an ability-appropriate level. Sign up now to start preparing for the opportunity to compete with the Mann Chess team in the District Chess tournament this Spring. Chinese for Beginners (1 st -2 nd ) Min 6/Max 10 By Jenny Chen Held in Mrs. Domalick s Classroom - Room 116B Learn about the Chinese language and culture. Students do not need to have any experience in Chinese, just an interest in learning to speak and understand basic phrases and be introduced to the Chinese Culture. Girls Basketball (3 rd -5 th ) Min 6/Max 15 By Diana Lanza Girls will explore fundamentals of basketball skills through games and fun drills. Skills include ball-handling, shooting, and defense. After drills the girls will engage in 3 on 3 or 5 on 5 games!! 4

5 Math Mustangs (K 1 st ) Min 6/Max 15 By Ms. Serio Held in Ms Serio s Classroom Room 114 For those students who love playing math games! We will play games using dice and playing cards. This program will give students an opportunity to practice their addition and subtraction skills. We will even use ipads (not every session). Mega Monopoly Club (3 rd -5 th ) Min 6/Max 20 By Mr. Jerkatis Held in Mr. Jerkatis Classroom Room 114 Get your game on with others in a relaxed, fun environment. Petits French Artistes (1 st -2 nd ) Min 6/Max 10 By Anne Catherine Delmelle Room TBD Each week, we will discover a French Artist, and create various art projects while learning some basic French. It s a great way to be artistically inspired while enjoying the French language. Recycled Art (K-2 nd ) Min 6/Max 10 By Annie Rath Students will make fun and exciting things using items found around the house, creating beautiful art!
