After a brief review of file management, we delve into creating, editing and formatting Word documents, including business letters, newsletters and reports. Next, we will work with Excel spreadsheets, creating professional looking charts and tables, and learning common functions and formulas. We will create databases with Access and learn to extract data and create queries. Then, after learning the basic principles of PowerPoint presentations, each student will design and present a unique slide show. Between each section of the course, we will explore how each program of the Office Suite integrates with the previous applications we have studied. (Prerequisites: CABT 110A and CABT 106 or equivalent skills.) Text/Materials: Required Text: Hunt/Clemens (2016) Illustrated Microsoft Office 2016 & Office 365 Fundamentals ISBN- 13: The textbook is available for sale at the Cabrillo College Bookstore. Copies of the text are available for check out at the Watsonville and Aptos CTCs. Required Software: Microsoft Office Professional 2016 for PC (A student discount is available at collegebuys.org.) Please note that older versions of Office may not perform all functions required for the course. Also note, the Mac version of Office 2016 does not contain the same features as the PC version. Plan to come to the CTC on campus to complete assigned work on a PC. Canvas Account: Canvas will be used to access course information, assignments, and data files. Go to to access your Canvas account. Use the same username/password as WebAdvisor. You will also be able to log into the CTCs in Aptos and Watsonville using these same credentials. Once you are logged in, select this course. Page 1

2 Online Access and Technical Assistance: To access this course, you will need regular and continuous access to a PC computer and a high-speed Internet connection. System Requirements: Operating System: PC - Windows 7 or greater / Mac - OS X 10.8 or greater. Graphics Card: SVGA and Modern DirectX compatible CPU: Intel Pentium 4 or higher RAM: 2GB or greater. Hard Drive: 4 GB available space or greater. Current version of Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Reader Keyboard and Mouse. Teaching, Learning and Evaluation Methods: 1. Assigned Readings: Material from the text and other outside sources will be covered in this course. Concepts, skills and practice tutorials from the text will be demonstrated during online meetings. 2. Discussion Questions: Discussion Questions posted in a Discussion Forum on Canvas may be in the form of textbook based questions, practical application of tasks, or feedback on assignments. Student participation will be evaluated based on the activity level demonstrated in these Discussion Forums. Professional posts are expected at all times. 3. Textbook Assignments: Textbook assignments are assigned each week. Some tasks related to Textbook Assignments can be reviewed during office hours or via Zoom. Questions pertaining to all assignments may be asked during office hours or by appointment. 4. Tests: Four tests will be given based on assignments, readings, and Office skills reviewed in the form of two methods; a Written Exam (30 pts.) and a Practical Exam (70 pts.). No makeup Tests will be given, however, the lowest combined test score will be dropped from the overall grade at the end of the semester. The final exam will not be comprehensive in nature. Student Learning Outcomes: Use the Microsoft Office Suite of applications (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) to design and produce effective professional quality documents and presentations of moderate complexity. 3 Tests (Best 3 out of 100 pts.) 300 Total 600 Actual points vary depending upon changes to assignments as they may be removed, added, or substituted. Grades will be calculated as a percentage of the maximum possible points for the course: A % B % C % ( Pass is 70% and above) D % ( No Pass is 69.9% and below) F 59.9% and below Important Note: This syllabus, along with course assignments and due dates, are subject to change. It is the student s responsibility to check Canvas for corrections or updates to the syllabus. Course Policies: PARTICIPATION: Students are expected to participate in discussion forums, complete assignments by due dates and contact instructor when help is needed. If you find that you have any trouble keeping up with assignments or other aspects of the course, make sure you let your instructor know as early as possible. Any student who has not had regular contact for more than 2 consecutive weeks or has substantial incomplete work by April 27th will be dropped from the class. Logging into Canvas does not qualify as regular contact. It is defined by the submission of assignments and discussion posts. ASSIGNMENTS: While you are encouraged to discuss the assignments with classmates, all work must be your own your hands on the keyboard creating the work. All assignments are due on or before the date due unless stated otherwise. Late submission of textbook assignments will be assessed a penalty of 50%, and may not be turned in after they are two weeks late. Tests and discussion assignments will not be accepted late and will close after the due date/time. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may be punished by failure on exam, paper or project; failure in course; and or expulsion from the college. For more information refer to the Cabrillo College Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook. In this class, it is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques. General advice and interaction are encouraged. Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, and tasks. In other words, students may not "work together" on graded assignments. (Summary: Don t cheat do your own work.) ACCOMMODATIONS: This class uses universal design principles and is designed to be as inclusive as possible. As small changes can make the difference between frustration and success, please let the instructor know if you are having difficulty with materials or in class. If you have an accommodations letter, please give the instructor a copy and meet with the instructor and discuss any accommodations you need to be successful in this class. Therefore, this course encourages respectful, professional interactions online via discussion forums, virtual meetings and in the CTC. Disrespectful or disruptive behavior will not be permitted. INCOMPLETE POLICY: Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and documented evidence as described in the Student Handbook. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing and must have completed 70% of the course.
