3 Longview High School International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Course Syllabus for Year 1 Student: Grade: Course: English A1, Higher Level (HL) Teacher: Christy Triece Course Description: The English A1 Higher Level course aims to develop an appreciation of literature, both classic and modern, and to develop an understanding of the techniques involved in literary study and criticism. To promote an international perspective, students will undergo comparative study of works from their own culture and those of other cultures. Throughout the course, students will study works from a variety of genres with the aim to develop the ability to engage in independent literary criticism and commentary on both familiar and unfamiliar texts. The course strives to advance a command of the language appropriate for literary criticism and an ability to express ideas with clarity, coherence, conciseness, precision and fluency. Opportunities to develop the student s power of expression, both in written and oral communication, will be provided through practice in writing and speaking in a variety of styles and situations. Course Topics: Course Outcomes: This process of instruction and assessment is intended to promote strong critical thinking and communication skills that will produce competent, informed, and reflective world citizens who can appreciate diversity and value tolerance.
