3 Longview High School International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Course Syllabus for Year 1 Student: Grade: Course: English A1, Higher Level (HL) Teacher: Christy Triece Course Description: The English A1 Higher Level course aims to develop an appreciation of literature, both classic and modern, and to develop an understanding of the techniques involved in literary study and criticism. To promote an international perspective, students will undergo comparative study of works from their own culture and those of other cultures. Throughout the course, students will study works from a variety of genres with the aim to develop the ability to engage in independent literary criticism and commentary on both familiar and unfamiliar texts. The course strives to advance a command of the language appropriate for literary criticism and an ability to express ideas with clarity, coherence, conciseness, precision and fluency. Opportunities to develop the student s power of expression, both in written and oral communication, will be provided through practice in writing and speaking in a variety of styles and situations. Course Topics: Course Outcomes: This process of instruction and assessment is intended to promote strong critical thinking and communication skills that will produce competent, informed, and reflective world citizens who can appreciate diversity and value tolerance. 4 Course Assessment: Course Resources: Teaching Time: A thorough knowledge both of the individual works studied and of the relationships between groups of works studied An appreciation of the similarities and differences between literary works from different ages and/or cultures An ability to engage in independent textual commentary on both familiar and unfamiliar pieces of writing A wide-ranging appreciation of structure, technique and style as employed by authors, and of their effects on the reader An ability to structure ideas and arguments, both orally and in writing, in a logical, sustained and persuasive way, and to support them with precise and relevant examples EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT : World Literature Assignment INTERNAL ASSESSMENT : Individual Oral Presentation Non-IB Assessments (Local Policies) These assessments will be graded in accordance with Longview ISD guidelines. Daily grades and quizzes will be weighted 50% and major grades and tests will be weighted 50%. Open-ended examination over the three summer reading books. Summer reading assignments may be used for the test. Assignments: 8/25 (2 nd class meeting) Examination: 8/30 (4 th class meeting) Personal experience essay Oct. 29, 2010 (approximate) See description below Student Choice of Dates from Dec. 6-13, 2010 Library research from variety of sources culminating with multimedia presentation Presentations: Jan , 2011 Individual Oral Presentation Presentation of a topic, chosen by the candidate, based on Part 4 works. Student presentation is recorded on audio for internal assessment and external moderation Student presents their analysis within a minute period during class. Scoring criteria will be distributed and discussed in preparation for each individual presentation Oral presentation will be given during the Spring semester of Year One Student Choice of Dates from Feb. 24, 2011-Mar. 4, 2011 World Literature Assignment Comparative Study of at least two world literature texts, written during the course and externally assessed, of words. Students will compose this paper during the Spring semester of Year One.
