1 WORLD HISTORY - HERRING AUGUST 3, 2017 Course Information World History Syllabus Things You Need To Know About This Class! Look back over the past, with its changing empires that rose and fell, and you can foresee the future, too ~ Marcus Aurelius Welcome to World History! In this class, we will study roughly 500 years+ of world history. We will being by doing a crash course of what you already learned in 7th grade about ancient world history up to the Age of Exploration. After the crash course we will jump to learning about the Age of Enlightenment and Revolution in the 16th century, and we will end as close to present day as we can possibly get without a fortune teller! We will be covering all regions of the world that are regularly inhabited by human beings. Therefore, be prepared to cover multiple chapters per unit! Also, be prepared for a lot of reading and writing, but also for some fun educational moments. 1 TEACHER Mr. Herring hunter.herring@dcsms.org Remind & 3 INDEPENDENT READING You will be required to do independent reading outside of class. Quizzes will be given to prove mastery! 5 LATE WORK #aintnobodygottimeforthat. No late work will be accepted! 2 TESTS Test may contain up to 100 questions and contain multiple choice, short answer, and essay portions 4 HOMEWORK See point 3! Most of your homework will be independent reading/ studying. Your main homework assignment will be your Scrapbook Project. 6 TUTORING Tuesday and Thursdays after school Before School is by appointment 1

2 H-Points: H-Points are system used in the classroom to reward excellence in behavior and in academics. You can earn these by following rules and procedures; positively participating in class; and going beyond what is expected of you. You may cash in H-Points for 5 points on a test. (One per test) Charger Champions: Students may vote on who they would like to be named Charger Champion for my classes weekly. You can vote by scanning the QR Code on the bulletin board. You may not vote for yourself. Submissions are due by end of day on Wednesdays. Class Rules: Rule 1: Be prepared and ready to learn everyday. Rule 2: Raise your hand to speak or get out of your seat. Rule 3: Respect all who enter this room! Treat people with kindness. (Including yourself) Rule 4: Take responsibility for your education! Rule 5: Follow all other classroom procedures. POSITIVE CONSEQUENCES: Recognition/Verbal Praise H-Points Charger Champion End of Semester Block Party Earned by the block that has the highest class average in both behavior and academics. NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES: 1st Offense: Documented Warning 2nd Offense: Documented Student-Teacher Conference; change seat if deemed necessary 3rd Offense: Parent phone call and/or silent lunch detention 4th Offense: Office Referral *All negative behaviors are documented in a log. ELECTRONIC DEVICES: All devices must be kept on silent at all times! We will follow the Red Light-Green Light System. The teacher reserves the right to revoke all personal electronic privileges from any individual or block for inappropriate actions. The sign can be found near the bulletin board at the front of the room. Your device can still be taken if you are using your device for inappropriate reasons while the sign is on green. Red Sign: No Devices Whatsoever! Green Sign: Must be used for what granted permission for. Music at a low volume No sharing devices. Safety reasons. 3 Make Up Work: This class will follow the district policy for make up work due dates. For every day you are absent you will get a day to make up work for a maximum of five days. Any absences after five consecutive days will result in all work being due five days from returning to class. All make up work will can be found in the days of the week folders on the front bulletin board. Any make up work that you have will have your name on it. Do not take 1 Day Absent = 1 Day to Make Up 2 Days Absent = 2 Days to Make Up 3 Days Absent = 3 Days to Make Up 4 Days Absent = 4 Days to Make Up 5 or More Days Absent = 5 Days to Make Up other people s work! If you lost your copy of something, look in the folder marked Weekend. Extra copies will be on a first come-first serve basis. If there is nothing in the folder see me immediately! Entering the Room and Bellwork: You will need to follow the following procedures every day that you come to World History: 1. Greet Mr. H at the door. 2. Read the Bellwork Instructions on the side white board. 3. Get any papers that the bellwork instructs you to pick up from the front bookshelf. 4. Once you have your papers you will go to your assigned seat and begin working immediately. Quietness, as close to silence, is the key! 5. A timer will be set once the bell rings and will be displayed on the front white board. Once this timer goes off bellwork will be collected. 6. Once the bell has rung, I will take roll. If you are not actively working on bellwork or sitting in your assigned seat you will be marked tardy. Acknowledge when your name is being called for roll or you may be marked absent. Cheating: If you are caught cheating you will receive an automatic 0 on the assignment and your parent will be notified. If there are any other incidents, after the first, then you will receive 0s on those assignments and you will be written up. Grade Breakdown: Daily Work & Quizzes: 35% Tests: 30% Classroom Technology You will be required to use technology for this class. I have a class site that you will need to familiarize yourself with. I often post things related to the class there. If there is something that you would like posted there let me know. You will have a semester long nine weeks test project that will require you to use a computer, the internet, and your school issued Google Classroom account. You will learn more about this at a later date. You must have regular and consistent access to working technology. I will not accept any excuses about broken technology when due dates roll around. 9 Weeks Test/Project: 15% Final Exam: 20% (Exemption Policy: 85 and above; no more than 2 absences) Leaving the Room: In order to leave the room you must have a current Southaven High School Planner signed by the teacher. You will need to fill out the time, location, and date boxes before I will sign anything! (I would suggest using a pencil for this.) Please handle any bathroom needs before the bell rings. If you need to go, let me know so you will not be marked absent/tardy. Suspicion of cheating is cheating! 3

4 Testing Policies and Procedures: Test Day Bellwork: Study Test will begin after I have taken roll. You will place all personal belongings at the front! You will be required to turn in all electronic devices to me. You will put a sticky note on your phone to ensure I know whose is whose. This now includes smart, wearable, technology. Ladies: You may keep your purse behind my desk if that makes you feel more comfortable. You must either wear your hoodie/jacket/coat or put it up at the front with the rest of your belongings. On test days there will be no break. You may not leave to go the restroom until you have finished your test. Plan accordingly! Once you have turned in your test you will not be allowed to get it back. If you miss the review day, but show up for the test you will be expected to take the test the same day as everyone else. If you miss the test you have one week to make it up (preferably after school). Schedule: First Block: Second Block: 15 Min. Break: When snack cart gets to the door Third Block: 4th Lunch: Fourth Block: Graded Papers: Graded papers can be found in the graded papers box near the door. If there are papers there 1-2 student volunteers may get them and pass them back out to the class. Turing in Work: You will always pass work, when asked for, to the person that is sitting close to my desk. The person that is sitting next to my desk will paper clip the papers together, and place it in the appropriate black turn in box behind my desk. These boxes are labeled by block. (Paperclips are next to the black boxes) If you somehow forget to turn in work when it is passed over, hold it until the end of class and give it to me on the way out. Once you are out of the class it will be considered late work which is not accepted. Getting Your Attention: If the class gets too loud or you are working with groups and I need the entire classes attention, I will clap a rhythm. You will be expected to immediately turn to me, get quiet, and then clap the same rhythm back. I will not continue with class until all eyes are on me and everyone is quiet. No Go Zones: The following things are off limits to all students in the classroom unless express permission is given. This is your only warning! Teacher Desk and Computer Chair (including the table behind my desk. Podium and Chair Rolling Cabinet Red Light-Green Light Sign for Electronics Teacher Computers and Projector Dismissing: The bell does not dismiss you. Mr. Herring is the only person who has the authority to dismiss the class. If anyone is standing or if there is trash/a textbook on the floor the entire class will be held until the situation is corrected. Do not pack up unless given permission to do so. 4

HERRING WORLD HISTORY SUPPLY LIST AUGUST 3, 2017 STUDENT KEPT SUPPLIES: World History Supply List Fall The following supplies are mandatory to have in your possession everyday that you are in class. 1.5 inch Binder. (NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS) 5 Tabbed Dividers (Unit 1: Ancient World; Unit 2: Revolution and Enlightenment; Unit 3: Imperialism; Unit 4: World Wars and 20th Century; Unit 5: Modern Day) Loose leaf paper (College ruled is preferred; NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS) Pens or Pencils (No gel pens; blue or black ink only; mechanical pencils are preferred) Highlighters (for note taking) Post-it Notes (for note taking) OUTSIDE OF CLASS SUPPLIES: The following supplies all relate to the semester long project that you will turn in for both 9 weeks test grades. All of these are mandatory to have. If you cannot get one of these particular items please speak to me ASAP! Access to a computer and internet Account that you know and can remember the password to. (Preferably a Google Account) CLASSROOM SUPPLIES THAT ARE TO BE TURNED IN: These supplies are optional to buy but will be greatly appreciated. Most of these supplies will be used in order to do more interactive and engaging actives in the classroom or to make the classroom as comfortable for everyone as possible. Color Pencils or Markers Construction Paper or Colored Printer Paper Glue sticks Hand Sanitizer Clorox Wipes Bandaids Tissue ******** (Tissue is the most important thing on this optional list! The school year and Flu season go hand in hand. This means that it is always in demand and usually in short supply.) 5
