2 Functional Vocational Training and Research Society (FVTRS) is a Non-Pro t Organisation promoting vocational skill training since We are based in Bangalore and operating all over the country through our partner organisations. The focus group has been the school dropout and illiterate youth as their number is huge in India. They do not have any scope for further education or skill training. Vision: To promote a just and humane society and to enhance and enrich the quality of lives of all vulnerable and needy people, with a special focus on young people. Mission: To empower the non-school goers and early school leavers, from among the marginalised and vulnerable communities, with limited or no access to formal channels of learning, an opportunity to improve the quality of their lives and to make them become self-reliant, by the provision of appropriate services and programmes, designed to enhance their vocational, technical and livelihood skills. Strategies and achievements Project Support: FVTRS provides project support to non-pro t organisations for implementing vocational skill training projects. So far FVTRS supported 1088 projects and trained youth with an employment rate of 70%. Out of the total youth trained (42%) are men, (58%) are women and 15 are transgenders. Among the trained youth (32%) are SC, (25%) are ST and (43%) belongs to OBC and General. SCOPE: SKILLING-COMMUNITY OWNED PROMOTION AND ENHANCEMENT (SCOPE) is a community based and community owned approach to skill development promoted by FVTRS for continuity and sustainability of its interventions. This has evolved due to a perspective that skill training is not a one time activity but a process of skill development. In this approach we encourage participation of the community in selecting the training, trade, selection of trainees, organising training, forming and mentoring collectives of trainees, employment, continuous education and enhancement of skills and livelihood.
3 Skill Net: Skill Net is the association of skilled workers promoted by FVTRS so that they will create internal resource for investment through regular savings, locally accessible training mechanisms, enterprise development, enhancement of skills and effective use of applicable government schemes. This also works as a platform for regular accompaniment of the trained youth and providing, EDP and Life Skills on a regular basis. At present we have 1708 such associations with a membership of skilled workers having a savings of Rs and started 61 new enterprises. EDP Centre: A team of master trainers who can train trainers on entrepreneurship development anchored by FVTRS. This is to facilitate and ensure regular EDP training for the trainees of vocational skill during and even after skill training. At present EDP Centre has 63 certi ed master trainers and 35 are undergoing training in different phases and they can conduct training in nine different languages. We have our own module also. Life Skill Club: FVTRS is promoting a team of trainers on Life Skills called Life Skill Club. This is to facilitate and ensure regular Life Skills training for the trainees of vocational skill during and even after skill training. At present FVTRS has 52 certi ed trainers and 28 are undergoing different phases of the courses who can conduct training in nine languages. We are developing our own module for this training. Open Schooling: FVTRS is primarily working with school drop out youth we want them to enhance their educational level also rather than remaining as drop outs. Hence we encourage partners to enrol them with open schools so that they can pass 10th standard directly. Since last eight years, we have enrolled trainees. Out of these enrolled youths so far 3939 has been successful in the examinations of the successful youths have opted for higher studies.
4 Research and Development: We have supported six researches. We have completed one research on Skilling and Employability of tribals. An impact study has been conducted with Seba Jagat, Rampur, Orissa on skill development. An action research on SCOPE is going on. We are now initiated a study of women and skill training. Another study on focussing on skill training possibilities in primary sector is being planned. Conferences and Consultations: FVTRS organises several regional/national level Consultations, Meetings, Conferences, Youth and Entrepreneurs' Conventions, Regional Market Fairs and Job Fairs and sensitised various stakeholders on skill training related issues. Resource Material Development: We periodically developed and published resource materials and promotional IEC materials like brochures, souvenirs, reports etc which are useful for skill providers to make the skill training more effective. Documentary lms on Life Skills, Facilitators guide for trainers of EDP, Green skill Skills in organic farming are some examples. We are working on more such materials. Partners Consortium: Partners' Consortium is a National Level association of skill training providers in India. Over the last 25 years FVTRS felt that there has to be a collective intervention by all the skill providers with a uniform approach and strategy looking for a similar result across the country. This will make skill development a movement by the skilled workers. Hence, we need to build a partnership which is beyond projects. It is also important for becoming relevant to the periodic changes in the skill ecosystem. Hence there is need for a constant dialogue among us and other stakeholders including the government. The collective existence of the skill providers will be an effective mechanism for constant interaction which will be re ecting and in uencing the emerging needs, approaches and policies. As a beginning we start this with our partners. Organisations who are interested to join this consortium may contact FVTRS.
5 Skill Support Mission: This is an annual campaign on skill development for promoting awareness among the civil society on skill development and to mobilise resources for skill development. This also aims to create a social responsibility for the trained youth and the communities. We hope that thus FVTRS and partnering organisations will have internal resource for providing skill training continuously though there will not be any project support. Capacity Building: We periodically organise partner capacity building through collective review meetings special orientation for new partners and on speci c subjects so that they will become more effective and professional in their approaches. Periodic staff capacity building is a regular agenda for FVTRS. Thus FVTRS is making a movement in the country through various implementing partners, collaborators and other stakeholders to reach out to the un-reached youth from vulnerable sections of the society to tap their hidden potentials and transform them into productive human capital contributing to nation building through comprehensive skills development.
