2 Welcome! 2nd grade is such an exciting year. This is a year of building and perfecting skills that have been introduced in kindergarten and first grade. Our biggest job this year will be learning to work independently and taking charge of our learning..

3 September 02, 2016 Switching classes... Why are we doing it, and how does it work? A lot thought and planning went into switching classes among 2nd graders this year. Switching for reading/writing and math/science gives teachers the chance to plan deeper, more meaningful lessons in the areas they feel strongest. During Personalization time, students may be pulled into different flexible groups.

4 Reader's Workshop include elements in the following: Phonics-understand the relationship between letters and sounds Fluency- ability to read text accurately and quickly Vocabulary- knowledge of the words within a text Comprehension - ability to understand and gain meaning from what you read. Our Reading Curriculum includes: * Phonics instruction and mini lessons~ shared literature/or read aloud by the teacher that focuses of units of study. * Guided Reading~ small group reading lessons based on your child s instructional reading level. * Independent Reading~ Each child will choose a trade book and read silently to him/herself. We will strive for fluency and stamina. * Reading focus on comprehension of text. This will be done through questions, discussions, written responses, and peer conversations. Second graders will move from "learning to read" to "reading to learn."

6 Words Their Way~ This is a program that was adopted by Cabarrus County. Students will be given individual list of words to meet their needs. Spelling check points will be given periodically. Spelling Homework is encouraged, but not required ~ Students will be given time in the mornings and during Personalization to practice sorting and spelling their words. We will begin in October after we complete our launching units.

7 * Lucy Calkins~ Writer's Workshop model. Student centered with teacher conferencing. Units include: narrative, short stories, persuasive, informative, opinion, authors as mentors, and fantasy writing. * Shared/ Interactive Writing~ class discusses, brainstorms ideas, note booking in science, or writing facts in Social Studies.

8 Math instruction is developed using the Units by Design and the resources provided. Teachers use a workshop model. This allows for hands-on" using manipulatives, games, small group with teacher, and independent practice. The concepts will become more challenging as we progress..

10 September 02, 2016 Second graders will learn about the roles and responsibilities of good citizens. Social Studies~ Global Education 1. How to research the past 2. Geographic representations and terms. 3. Basic economic concepts 4. Purpose of government 5. Technology

11 How do we know what they know? Pre-tests and post tests are given to determine mastery in math skills. Writing samples are reviewed to assess mastered writing skills. Rubrics, conference notes, and student work is used to determine mastery of reading skills as well as iready and Reading 3D reports. This information is reported on Report Cards which will go home four times during the year. Benchmark (Discovery Ed and Reading 3D) assessments also occur three or four times during the year. This data drives instruction. We will meet for a conference at the end of the first quarter and again as needed throughout the year. Progress reports will also go home in the middle of each quarter.

17 Agendas signed daily. Behavior is noted here daily. Reading- Reading Comprehension sheets will be sent home Mondays and are due Fridays. Your child should also read each night for minutes (record in Agenda). Math- Math homework will sent home on Mondays and will be due Friday. Test and quizzes will be sent home in Data Binders to sign and return. bedtimemath.com will be encouraged for at home practice. Spelling- Practice at home as needed.

18 Teachers do our best each day to provide individual positive reinforcement to each student. Students receive positive "above the line" marks throughout the day. Several rule reminders and redirection of a student is done before a child is asked to mark a "below the line" letter. Parents should initial student agendas daily. Each and every day is a new beginning, with new choices for the child to make about behavior. Everyone can have a tough day. (Even teachers!) 19 September 02, 2016 We will eat lunch each day for 25 minutes. If you pack your child's lunch, please pack a healthy lunch. No soda or candy. Teachers cannot stop students from purchasing "extras" in the cafeteria. Please call the cafeteria manager to address this. Remember that CCS is does not allow fast food items. You are able to add money to your child's lunch account via the Internet or you may send money with your child to school. You may come to eat lunch with your child, however we ask that you please meet us in the cafeteria. Once in the cafeteria you can eat at a parent table with your child. Store bought items can be brought in and shared for Birthday treats. It is always best to let your child's teacher know in advance if you are planning on coming or sending in a treat.

20 September 02, 2016 We love to have volunteers to help in the classroom and with clerical. We have parents who help with copies, cutting, etc. and volunteers who help with working with small groups of students in reading and math. Any person who volunteers MUST have a clear background check completed. Background checks are good for two years. Please be sure that yours is updated.

21 September 02, 2016 Attendance/Tardy Policy *Cabarrus County is stressing the importance of attendance, tardiness and early dismissals. *If your child is absent, please fill out the absent excuse form online. Send a doctor's excuse when your child returns to school. *10th tardy = conference with principal or assistant principal *10th early checkout = conference with principal or assistant principal
