Appropriate score on CPT or minimum of C in MAT 0012C Course Description: MAT 0024C 3 Credit Hours (3, 1) Prep Math This college preparatory course is designed to prepare students for MAT 0033, Intermediate Algebra. Topics include sets; computations with decimals, percents, and integers; operations with rational and polynomial expressions; solving linear equations and expressions; plane geometry figures and applications; graphing ordered pairs and lines; and determining the intercepts of lines. A minimum grade of C is required for successful completion of this course. This course does not apply towards mathematics requirements in general education or toward any associate degree. Course Objectives: MAT 0024C is an introductory mathematics course that integrates a review of basic arithmetic skills with basic algebraic concepts. You will develop a mathematics vocabulary and will use it in communication both oral and written. You will also become an effective problem solver using algebraic techniques, graphical techniques, and technology.

2 In addition to the time you will be spending in class each week, you will spend one hour each week in a math lab. During the lab time, you will work on mathematics activities that will reinforce or expand on the material you have in your textbook. Attendance of the lab period is required for this course. Notes for Success: 1) If you miss a class meeting, chances are you will be clueless on the material missed when the time comes to take the next test. Its is to your benefit to hear and see the material first-hand, rather than digging it out of your textbook or trying to copy and decipher notes from a classmate. History shows that students with few absences attain the highest grades. 2) DON T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! Chances are you are not the only one that is confused. Don t wait until the last minute to get things cleared up. 3) Form study groups of find a study buddy. Make sure to get contact information from at least two other students in the class. Skills and Competencies: Core Competencies of a Valencia Graduate Valencia s Student Core Competencies are complex abilities that are essential to life-long success. This course will help you develop and demonstrate the abilities to: 1) Think critically and make sound reasoned choices by acquiring, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating knowledge. 2) Read, listen, write and speak effectively. 3) Make reasoned value judgments and responsible commitments. 4) Act purposefully, reflectively, and responsibly. CLAST Competencies This course (including the lab) reinforces the arithmetic CLAST competencies and teaches many of the algebra CLAST competencies. You will learn mathematics skills including arithmetic skills, geometry and measurement skills, algebra skills, statistics skills, reading skills including literal and critical comprehension skills, and English language skills including word choice and grammar, spelling, capitalizations and punctuation skills. Policies: Attendance: ON-TIME attendance is required at you assigned class and lab times. Arriving late and/or leaving early (without prior arrangements) is inconsiderable to you classmates and instructor. Please inform me if you know in advance that you will be absent. You will be responsible for all materials and any announcements made in class. Because there will be materials presented in class that is not contained in the textbook,

3 it is very important that you are in class every day. If you are habitually absent, you will be administratively withdrawn from the course. Homework: Homework will be assigned out of the textbook and/or in MyMathLab and is due by the day of the test and will not be accepted late for any reason. All problems must be completed and all pertinent work must be shown. Students who complete all homework assignments throughout the semester will have the option of dropping their lowest test score. Lab Activities: Lab attendance is mandatory. Grades will be based both on attendance and the content and quality of work. You will have 14 labs throughout the semester; the highest ten grades will be averaged. Exams: You will have seven exams during the semester. The first six exams will emphasize new material, but may include material from prior assessments. These exams will be given during the lab or normal class time. The seventh exam will be a comprehensive final exam to be given during the scheduled final exam time. A missed exam without prior arrangements will result in a grade of 0 on the exam. Academic Honest and Conduct: Each student is expected to be in compliance with the college policy on academic honesty as set forth in the admissions catalog and student handbook. Providing information to another student or receiving information concerning exam content is considered cheating. The instructor reserves the right to determine appropriate penalties within Valencia Community College s academic honesty policies. State Mandated Testing for MAT 0024C The state of Florida requires students exiting college prep mathematics to demonstrate achievement on the following competencies on an exam administered near the end of the course. Each student must pass the exam to earn a grade of C or better in the course. No calculators will be allowed and no formula sheet will be provided. The competencies are: 1) Simplify numeric expressions 2) Simplify exponential expressions 3) Simplify algebraic expressions 4) Perform arithmetic operations with polynomials 5) Simplify square roots of monomials 6) Solve linear equations 7) Solve linear inequalities 8) Graph and interpret linear equations 9) Set up and solve word problems 10) Factor polynomials 11) Simplify algebraic fractions 12) Solve quadratic equations
