3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. <br><br> The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? serves 1,865 students in grades The principal of is James Gibbons, and the assistant principals are Ani Akaraz, Gary Harper, and Pete Mazzoni. The athletic administrator is Lori Hyman. There are 106 professional teaching staff members including one media specialist and seven counselors. In addition, Stevenson has the following support staff: student assistance person, school psychologist, school social worker, speech and language therapist, resource classroom teacher, occupational and physical therapist, and homebound services. The building support staff includes 9 custodians, 7 secretaries, 4 paraprofessionals, 3 full time security staff, a school Resource Officer, and 11 food service workers. Page 2

We believe the following skills are essential: - Communication is a necessary skill for success. The entire school community will work to increase meaningful communication. - Analytical/Problem Solving Skills are essential for success. The staff will work to increase students' ability to confront and solve complex tasks. - Technological Proficiency is a necessary skill for the 21st Century. The school will provide students with the opportunities to utilize emerging technology in their work. We believe the following habits are essential: - Teamwork is vital. We strive to create teamwork amongst the staff, students, parents, and community at large. - Effort and dedication are habits that we will foster in all students. - Respect is a habit we will encourage in the students by demonstration. We will respect the students and expect that they respect their peers, their elders, and themselves. - Creativity is a habit we will seek to foster in all students by providing an environment that encourages open-mindedness and risk taking. We believe the following cognitive processes are essential: - Global consciousness is an understanding of the diverse world in which one lives. - Critical evaluation is the ability to look at a problem from multiple perspectives and choose the wisest course of action. - Adaptation is a process of understanding change and modifying one's action to accommodate change. - Equipped with these skills, habits, and cognitive processes, our graduates will be prepared for their future. 6 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. In 2009 the Livonia Public Schools School District was awarded the highest level of district accreditation through the North Central Association (NCA), which is now AdvancEd International School Accreditation Commission. Through the district accreditation process, The AdvancEd accreditation process supports and validates individual school improvement efforts. Overall Graduation rate for the Class of 2012 is 95%. African American graduation rate for the Class of 2012 is 87.5%. SWD graduation rate for the Class of 2012 is 80.43%. Economically Disadvantaged graduation rate for the Class of 2012 is 91%. AP students are 10% points higher than the state average at 87%. Approximately 1,939 families have signed up to receive school information and updates via "e-blast electronic mailouts" from the principal's office. During the school year, 278 notices (over 500,000 contacts) were sent to parents electronically. Stevenson also disseminates information through its website, Facebook (1,429 people engaged and 8,685 weekly total reach) and Twitter accounts. Parents may also access their student's grade and attendance through a secure website called Parent Connect. School Improvement is a process by which stakeholders in a school environment work cooperatively to improve student achievement of the core curriculum goals. The process relies on staff, parents, and students participating in collaborative decision making in formulating and implementing a plan for continuous quality improvement. Our building steering committee consists of 11 stakeholder representatives. This year we continued to monitor the implementation of the five AdvancED standards. Our efforts this year were to develop an action plan to increase student achievement in reading, math and writing, in alignment with the district school improvement plan. Much of our professional development and collaboration time this year included topics such as writing using the ACT prompts, analyzing student data using the CLASS A database system, assisting all learners using technology, developing common assessments, and team teaching to support students with disabilities and efforts to prevent bullying. School improvement goals for and : 1. All students at will be proficient in math. 2. All students will be proficient in reading. 3. All students will improve in writing. 4. All students will be proficient in science. We have focused on increasing staff collaboration time using student assessment data including daily class work, district common assessments, state assessment data, and nationally standardized tests. We have identified a new sub-group, the Bottom 30%, which we will be adding to our plan. Page 4
