1 2018 Year Three Parent Information Night. Welcome to our year 3 class for We hope that you and your child will find this classroom to be a warm and welcoming space. We have 26 children in the class this year and we recognise that they are all unique individuals with different learning needs. We are looking forward to getting to know them as individuals and we will work hard to accommodate their differences. We hope that they will each feel valued and important as members of our class. We believe that children learn best when the learning environment is well organised and engaging and learning tasks are interesting. We have worked hard to provide this type of environment for the children and we have been thrilled to see how enthusiastically they have embraced their new classroom and routines. Teacher Roles: Leanne Nield will be teaching Monday - Thursday and Alex Roberts will teach on Friday. Alex will focus on teaching Science, HASS (History, Geography & Civics) and digital technologies. Leanne will cover the other curriculum areas including all of the English and. Kylie Smith will take the children for Japanese cultural studies and Marissa Lloyd will teach PE. 2 Morning routine Encourage your children to get organised independently, starting at home. They can pack their school bags and make sure the essentials are ready to go. Once at school we have established a class routine children are to enter the classroom, unpack their bags and then go to the front of the school to play. By all means feel free to come in and visit our classroom but please help your child develop their organisation skills by allowing them to do their jobs themselves. Diaries and homework A note has been stuck in each child s homework book to give everyone guidelines to follow for completing homework. There is also a copy of this note on our class page on the school website. Homework is a school expectation and as such there are consequences for it not being completed. As a general rule, homework should take about mins each night plus reading time. Reading may be done independently, however it is beneficial for your child to read aloud to an adult at least once or twice a week if possible. Please remember to record home reading in the diary and keep track of the number of nights reading has taken place. Diary use is a valued skill at St Joseph s. On Mondays, children will fill out their diaries with the general overview for the week. Throughout the week there may be more notes added to inform you about events throughout the week as well as parent/teacher communication. It is worth checking your child s diary every night! Students will record their Think Mental results and their spelling test results in their diary. Please check and sign your child s diary on Monday and Friday This is to ensure that you are aware of homework expectations and to inform you about their achievements during the week. QuickNumber QuickNumber will commence in Week Two. Please read through the instructions in your child s record book. Parent/Teacher communication Communication is a vital part of collaboration between parents and teachers. Please feel free to use student diaries for any notes or to make an appointment to see one of us. I will not check diaries every day, so if you have written a note please remind your child to put their diary in the box when they unpack. 3 Student absence If your child is going to be late or away from school, please let me know in advance via your child s diary. Alternatively, you can phone the front office ( ) or me to let me know. School website I cannot stress enough how much information is on our school website. Teachers are required to upload any notes sent home to their class page and the school fortnightly newsletter is also uploaded. You can visit our website at Any misplaced notes can be found here or alternatively copies of class newsletters are kept in the front office where you can ask Mandy or Sarah for a copy. On our class page there are links to Sound Waves with the appropriate login details. Students can access these sites as well as Study Ladder from home whenever you see fit. Timetable A copy of the timetable is attached. Please be aware that this subject to change!! School starts at 8.50am and it is really important that children are here in plenty of time to unpack and organise themselves for the day. It is amazing what a difference an organised start makes for children and also to the smooth running of the classroom. 5 Parents as partners We all know that education is very much a partnership between school and home, parents and teachers. None of us can do it successfully on our own! It is always great to have parent interest and input in the classroom. We welcome you to pop in at anytime to see what we are doing and we especially encourage you to come in after school and have a look at our classroom displays and things. If you have any particular skills or interests that you could share with us or you would like to help out in the classroom please let us know. Mass is held most Fridays at 12 noon and families are very welcome. We also have some special school community events coming up in the next few weeks that you are welcome to attend Tues 13 th Feb: Shrove Tuesday School Picnic Wed 14 th Feb Ash Wednesday Liturgy 9am Friday 23 rd Feb: Welcome Mass to welcome new students and their families Tuesday 6 th March: 1 st parent/child reconciliation Meeting More information regarding the sacramental program will follow later this term. Week 7 & 8-3-way interviews. Behaviour Management We take a positive reinforcement approach to behaviour management which involves encouraging and rewarding positive behaviour. This is done verbally by commenting on things that children do well and talking up those things where possible. We are starting the year with a weekly team challenge where the children will have an opportunity to earn team points by displaying excellent behaviour. We have worked out the behaviours that are important to us and these are set out as our class behaviour expectations. As the year progress and if the need arises we may introduce other reward systems.

6 For not so positive behaviour, our management procedure is based on the 5 R s and we follow these steps unless the incident is considered particularly serious. The lunch time rethink room is only used after all of the above steps have been taken or when work has not been completed in the required time. Re-think is most often used for inappropriate yard behaviour. You will be notified if your child visits either another class for time out or the rethink room. Class Camp: This year we will be having an overnight camp to Monarto Zoo. This will take place in term 3 on Thursday 30 th and Friday 31 st of August. We will be joining with the Year 3 s from the 3 / 4 class for this camp. As yet we do not know whether parents will be required to attend. Naplan: Naplan testing will take place in term 2. We will send out information at the end of this term as to how you can help your child best prepare for this. Most importantly is to not make a big deal of it we won t be!! Please feel very welcome to call in and see us if you have any questions, concerns or feedback along the way! After school is usually best as mornings can be pretty busy.
