4 Review of modal verbs Modal verbs like could and should are used to talk about possibilities in the future. You can use them to talk about your suggestions or solutions to problems. Might is also used to talk about possible events. Need to and have to are more direct they describe things that must be done. Examples We could start volunteering on the weekends. We have to have clean air and water. We should exercise more often. We need to eat food to survive. We might need to make a change. COLLABO LANGUAGES Page 4 of 36

5 Modal verbs and the infinitive Use need and have with to + infinitive to express obligation, or things you should do. Should, could, and might describe possibilities or suggestions for the future. These verbs are used with the bare infinitive (no to) We need We have We should We could We might to change. to do this. take care of the environment. give money to a charity. help lots of people. 6 Place the text in the correct order A Some people today have lots of money and resources, but others do not. This inequality is a large global concern. B At the same time, there are many people who do not have enough food. Global hunger is a large concern that is getting worse. C It is important to vote in order to solve these issues. Politicians can make rules that help poor people get access to food. D Obesity is a big problem in many rich countries. If you have lots of money, it is easier to eat unhealthy foods. 21 Talking about problems and their causes You can talk about the possible causes of a problem with could be or might be. This could be followed by an adjective (it could be cheaper), a verb + ing (we could be helping, they could be working), or even a noun (there might be a way). Examples The temperature of the earth could be warmer in the future. It could be caused by global warming. This could be because of humans. We could be working on a new solution. 22 Talking about problems and their solutions Make your argument stronger by using adverbs and comparative adjectives. Adverbs modify verbs. Example: We need to help quickly. Comparative adjectives modify nouns.
