1 L.Valentine Grade 8 Expectations ( ) Language: (Reading, Writing, Oral Communication, Media Literacy) On-going throughout the year, students develop specific skills in reading, writing, oral communication and media literacy through various activities and assignments. -reads and demonstrates an understanding of a variety of literary, graphic, and informational texts, using a range of strategies to construct meaning -recognize a variety of text forms, text features, and stylistic elements and demonstrates understanding of how they help communicate meaning -generates, gathers, and organizes ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience -drafts and revises their writing, using a variety of informational, literary, and graphic forms and stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience -listens in order to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes -uses speaking skills and strategies appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes -demonstrates an understanding of a variety of media texts -identifies some media forms and explains how the conventions and techniques associated with them are used to create meaning -use knowledge of words and cueing systems to read fluently -reflect on and identify their strengths as readers, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful before, during, and after reading -use editing, proofreading, and publishing skills and strategies, and knowledge of language conventions, to correct errors, refine expression, and present their work effectively -reflect on and identify their strengths as writers, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful at different stages in the writing process -reflect on and identify their strengths as listeners and speakers, areas for improvement and the strategies they found most helpful in oral communication situations -create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences, using appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques

3 History(Grade 8) : -describes various significant events, developments, and people in Canada between 1850 and 1890, and explain their impact -analyse key similarities and differences between Canada in and in the present day, with reference to the experiences of and major challenges facing different groups/ individuals History (Grade 7) -describes various significant events, developments, and people in Canada between 1713 and 1800, and explain their impact -use the historical inquiry process to investigate perspectives of different groups on some significant events, developments, and/ or issues that affected Canada between 1800 and 1850 Assessments will include: Oral and written responses Drama activities Research projects Tests and quizzes Debates The Arts Visual Arts -applies the creative process to produce art works in a variety of traditional two- and three- dimensional forms, as well as art works that communicate feelings, ideas, and understandings, using elements, principles, and techniques of visual arts as well as current media technologies -demonstrate an understanding of a variety of art forms, styles, and techniques from the past and present, and their sociocultural and historical contexts

4 Dance and Drama Drama will be reported on in term one and dance in term two. Students will explore the elements of drama and dance and focus on building confidence when presenting and communicating. This will be done through small and large group activities as well as through role plays, and presentations. -apply the creative process to process drama and the development of drama works, using the elements and conventions of drama to communicate feelings, ideas, and multiple perspectives -demonstrate an understanding of a variety of drama and theatre forms, traditions and styles from the past and present, and their sociocultural and historical contexts -demonstrate an understanding of a variety of dance forms, traditions, and styles from the past and present, and their sociocultural and historical contexts -apply the creative process to the composition of a variety of dance pieces, using the elements of dance to communicate feelings and ideas Mathematics See attached sheet Math Assessments will include: Daily math investigations and homework assignments Mental math drills Group work and problem solving activities Tests and quizzes Physical Education -performs movement skills, demonstrating an understanding of basic requirements of the skills and applying movement concepts as appropriate -participates actively and regularly in a wide variety of physical activities, and demonstrates an understanding of how personal motivational factors can be used to encourage participation
