1 ELAR Summer Professional Development, 2014 K 5 & Special Education Whitney Hicks (Teacher) June 17 th Strategies to Build & Support Engagement in the Reading Workshop (6 hours) This session will look at the cornerstones of engagement that directly affect student achievement. Those being: stamina, book choice, and focus. will take a deeper look at tools that support these facets of engagement; like, reading logs that match the K 5 reader, browsing boxes, engagement inventories, book clubs, and conferring. August 1 st Teaching Towards Independence: The Backwards Planning Model (6 hours) This session will take teachers through the collaborative planning process, developing a clear idea of what a standard really looks like in the classroom. will understand and use the Backwards Planning Model, focusing on reading, social studies integration, and writing. will look at student behaviors and teacher behaviors around specific TEKS. will also take a deeper look at the assessment questions that drive instruction, and how to put meaningful grades in the grade book. K 5 & Special Education **This session would be highly beneficial if teams attend together, because of the collaborative nature of the session. Lisa Natali (IC) Elizabeth Hoppe (IC) Launching a Workshop that Provides Structure and Routine for Authentic Learning, Motivation and Engagement (6 Hours) This session will take a detailed look at the routines and structures launched at the beginning of the year, and how to sustain and revise workshop as the year progresses. take an in depth look at the structure of the workshop. THE WHY? will walk away with strategies and support systems, within the workshop, to maintain and foster its validity. THE HOW? Making Complex Standards Seem Simple, Sensible, and Sustainable (6 hours) Teaching is becoming more and more complex as we move deeper into understanding the rigor of our students current social and environmental eras. For that reason, taking time to build foundational knowledge around FISD s three most complex standards will build confidence in making differentiated teaching moves for each student. will move along the continuum of learning for these three standards/skills: Inferring, Summarizing, and Character Analysis. Each skill will be completely unpacked and differentiated through analyzing specific behaviors. K 2 Guided Reading (8:00 11:00) This session will focus on gaining a deeper understanding of the key aspects of assessing students as individual readers, as well as using assessment data to drive small group reading instruction. Participants will acquire practical techniques in the organization, planning, and implementation of guided reading in a K 2 classroom. Participants will acquire practical techniques in the organization, planning, and implementation of guided reading in a 3 5 classroom. June 17 th Narrative & Expository Writing (3 hours) This professional development session will focus on the narrative and expository writing genres. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the organizational structures of each writing genre, as well as learn instructional and formative assessment strategies to enhance writing across the genres. Elementary: K 2 LLI (6 hours) This professional development is intended for the designated campus K 2 LLI teachers. Participants will learn how to successfully implement the Leveled Literacy Intervention Systems by Fountas and Pinnell. will also engage in hands on activities to become familiar with the reading behaviors students exhibit at various levels of text, as well as learn strategies to accelerate the progress of struggling readers. Elementary: 3 rd LLI (6 hours) This professional development is intended for the designated campus 3 rd grade LLI teachers. Reading in the Wild: Learning from Lifelong Reader (6 hours) Based on survey data from 900 adult readers and assessments from her middle school students Donalyn Miller identifies the characteristics of wild readers and shares methods that support students development into lifelong readers. During this workshop attendees will reflect on their reading lives, discuss the classroom, library, and home conditions that foster wild reading, and examine texts and tools that engage young readers and move them toward independent reading lives. I need grades for Science!, 3 hours rubrics to assess student work in science. must use various techniques and tools when evaluating what students know, as well as how students actually use and apply information and skills. Our Process Skills state that students must solve problems, answer questions, and implement investigations. Therefore, teachers must develop instruments that measure those skills. Elementary Science: k 1 The Brick and Mortar Words of Science, 3 hours This 3 hour session focuses on teachers identifying brick and mortar words in the science curriculum and customizing instruction to meet their students needs. Teacher will take a deeper look at what vocabulary should drive their instruction and how to put meaning into students understanding of science vocabulary specific to their grade level TEKS. 6 Elementary Science Summer Professional Development, 2014 Elementary Science: Beyond Basic Journaling, 3 hours This 3 hour session focuses on student journal entries and what teacher can do to facilitate meaningful journaling. Writing as a formative assessment, reflective writing, and teacher journal responses will be the few of the topics covered. Elementary Science: 4 5 Inquiring Minds Want to Know, 3 hours: 1 session each PD week This 3 hour session focuses on teacher and student behaviors when teaching TEKS 4.6D and 5.6D. Having students design an experiment that tests the effects of force on an object can be difficult for teachers to guide and challenging for students to complete on their own. How much should teachers guide? How much should students be able to complete on their own?
