GRAMMAR REVIEW As you can see, there are two present tenses in this text, the present simple and the present continuous. I m trying to concentrate. 2 To describe an activity happening in this period, but not necessarily at this moment: She s studying to be nurse. I m reading War and Peace. 3 For planned future arrangements: I m meeting Tom for lunch later. Where are you going for Christmas? Now let s try some more exercises on these two tenses:

What colours do you prefer to wear?... What are you doing now?... What do you usually do at this time?... 4 Correct the mistakes in these sentences. 1. How you spell this word? 2. This evening I go to see a play at the Old Vic Theatre. Next we will look at a passage about PEOPLE, the great communicators (page 11 of New Headway). Read it carefully and answer the questions below: PEOPLE, the great communicators 1 Match the headings to the four paragraphs: A history of communication How we communicate Communication today Differences between people and animals 2 Questions: Which animals are mentioned? What can they do? What is special about human communication? What can we do? Which four forms of media are mentioned in the last paragraph? What is good and bad about information technology today?

6 Now we will listen to two neighbours, Mrs Snell and Steve, talking about each other. Click onto the relative recordings (Listenings 1 & 2) and answer the following questions from the two different points of view. 1 When did Steve move into his new flat? 2 Is it a large flat? 3 What s his job? Is it a good job? 4 Does he work long Hours? 5 What does he wear for work? 6 Who is staying with Steve at the moment? 7 What time did Steve s party end? 8 How many people came to the party? 9 What is Steve doing tonight? 10 Why doesn t Mrs Snell want to speak to Steve? Finally here are some expressions which we use in different social situations. Let s try to match them: e.g. How are you? + Fine, thanks. How do you do? Have a good weekend! Hello, I m Paul. Make yourself at home. Thank you very much indeed. Good night! Excuse me! Bless you! That s very kind. Thank you. Not at all. Don t mention it. Sleep well. Same to you. Thanks. How do you do? Yes, can I help you? Pleased to meet you Paul.

7 PART 2: Practice for PET Tests N.B. These exercises are taken from authentic PET tests and therefore not graded to cover the structures covered in Modules 1, 2, etc. You can try them now or, if you prefer, do them towards the end of the course. Type 1 - Transformations (producing variations on simple sentences). Here are some sentences about playing tennis. For each question, finish the second sentences so that it means the same as the first. Use no more than three words. Example: Answer: I prefer playing tennis to playing squash. I like playing tennis.. playing squash. more than. 1. It s too cold to play tennis. It isn t warm.. to play tennis. 2. There are only a few squash courts in this town. There aren t very.. squash courts in this town. 3. If you don t play every week, you won t improve your tennis. You won t improve your tennis unless.. every week. 4. Why don t you join a tennis club?
