1 Lake-Sumter Community College Course Syllabus Course / Prefix Number REA 0007 Course Title: College Prep Reading I CRN: Credit: 4 Term: Spring 2012 Course Catalog Description: This course is designed to provide reading instruction to those students who test into the course based on a Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) for reading. This course includes a study of literal and inferential comprehension skills, organizations of informational patterns and vocabulary development. The following are the specific comprehension improvement and vocabulary development course objectives. 1. Comprehension Improvement A. Literal comprehension skills 1. Recognizing main idea in a given passage 2.Identiying supporting details 3.Determing the meaning of words on the basis of context B. Critical reading skills 1. Recognizing the author s purpose 2. Identifying the author s overall organizational pattern 3. Distinguishing between statement of fact and statement of opinion 4. Detecting bias 5. Recognizing the author s tone 6. Recognizing explicit and implicit relationships within a sentence 7. Recognizing valid arguments 8. Drawing logical inferences and conclusions II. Vocabulary Development A. Recognizing that every word represents a concept and serves as a graphic symbol of that concept 1. Read for a variety of purposes including gathering information, to follow directions, to give a response, to form an opinion, to understand information, to enjoy and appreciate. 2. Value reading as a means of learning and enjoyment. 3. Analyze context to understand the meaning of new or unfamiliar words The successful functioning of the academic community demands honesty, which is the basis of respect for both ideas and persons. In the academic community, there is an ongoing assumption of academic integrity at all levels. There is the expectation that work will be independently thoughtful and responsible as to its sources of information and inspiration. Honesty is an appropriate consideration in other ways as well, including but not limited to the responsible use of library resources, responsible conduct in examinations, and the responsible use of the Internet. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office.
