COURSE CREDITS, CONTACT HOURS, & DESCRIPTION Credits: 3 Contact Hours: 45 Lecture: 45 Lab: Course Length: 16 weeks Catalog Course Description: Application of business communication principles through creation of effective business documents and oral presentations. Includes study and application of team communication and use of technology to facilitate the communication process. Course emphasis is on the types of written and oral communicative skills needed in the workplace. Topics also include personal skills, employment skills, teamwork effective presentations, and planning and conducting meetings. Prerequisites: None Co- requisites: None Institutional/ Core: Program: Course: STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. A demonstrated ability to use oral and written communication effectively 3. Identify the fundamentals of communication theory and their relationship to business communication. 2. Apply the principles/processes of effective communication to business situations that use memos, letters, proposals, reports, etc. 3. Prepare/organize business messages that are logical, complete, concise, grammatically correct, and audience centered. 4. Differentiate (in style) between school writing and business communication, as well as, determining whether a specific set of words will result in effective business communication. 5. Create business letters, s, and memos that respond to an inquiry, place an order, solicit a request, sell a product, establish return policies, adjust a billing, seek credit, respond to a claim, make collections on an account, order supplies, handle complaints, and prepare a resume and cover letter. 6. Explain how your products and services meet these needs. List the specific consumers, organizations or businesses that your company serves or will serve. Explain the competitive advantages that you believe will make your business a success such as your location, expert personnel, efficient operations, or ability to bring value to your customers. 5 ACCOMMODATIONS: ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: ELECTRONIC DEVICES: EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION - E2CAMPUS: If you are a student with a disability needing classroom and/or testing accommodations, please contact the Coordinator of Disability Services in the Academic Center, Room B6 on the ground floor of the Academic Center ( ). You need to do this at the beginning of the semester in order to be eligible for accommodations during the semester. In the case of clinical courses, students should be aware that taking lab practical exams in a lab setting with the lab instructor and within specified time limits is considered a major component of the course and cannot be modified. Personal integrity is a goal that Harcum fosters. Students should be guided by the fundamental ideals of honor and integrity in the personal conduct of their lives. The Harcum degree represents not only the fulfillment of academic requirements but also the development of character and personal conduct. A student who is dishonest in any assignment, test or examination receives a grade of F and the incident is reported to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The penalties for such violations are cumulative. A second violation will result in failure of the course; the third, expulsion from the college. All students must put their cell phones on silent status during classroom instruction and activities. No student will be permitted to use electronic devices (ex. cell phone, ipod) during instructional or testing times. Harcum College has an e2campus emergency notification text message program. It will be mandatory practice for the instructor or an instructor- designated student to keep his/her phone on ring to regularly review text messages during class time for a potential emergency. The instructor or student is not expected to respond to any messages except to notify the instructor and/or students of a potential emergency from e2campus. All Harcum students must register for the e2campus emergency notification system which connects students instantly to significant events that affect campus classes and activities. The notification system sends announcements regarding emergency conditions, weather cancellations and delays, and other urgent campus- wide information instantly and simultaneously. Go to Harcum's e2campus page, click on "I Need to Create an Account" and sign up today at: STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT/CLASSROOM DISRUPTION: Conduct that a reasonable person would view as substantially or repeatedly interfering with the conduct of a class is prohibited. Such conduct includes, but is not limited to, repeatedly leaving and entering a classroom without authorization, making loud or distracting noises, persisting in speaking without being recognized, or resorting to physical threats or personal insults. Students are responsible to comply with an instructor s individual requests regarding appropriate classroom behavior as listed in the class syllabus. INSTRUCTOR ATTENDANCE POLICY: INSTRUCTOR POLICIES You are expected to attend every class. You are allowed one unexcused absence without penalty. Each additional unexcused absence will be penalized as follows: An unexcused absence = 3- point subtraction from final grade. (For example, if you have an 89 final average with 2 unexcused absences your final grade will be 83). Four (4) or more unexcused absences will result in automatic failure for the course. If you experience life- altering circumstances and cannot attend class, seek advice from your Program Director about withdrawing from the course. An absence is excused if: TURNITIN: Page 5 of 8 You are required to participate in an official Harcum College activity (documentation required); You are under a doctor s care (documentation required); You are granted a leave of absence from Harcum College for reasonable cause by your Program Director and/or Vice President of Academic Affairs (documentation required). Students enrolled in this course may be required to submit or have submitted by the Instructor papers, assignments and/or projects online to Turnitin.com for originality checking and for the detection of plagiarism. Turnitin.com is only a tool for detecting textual similarities. The Instructor retains responsibility for any judgment of plagiarism. All submitted student work will be included, always without your name and any personal information, as source documents in the Turnitin.com reference database solely for the purpose of detecting if someone else has plagiarized your work.
