1 BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE LAKE JACKSON, TEXAS SYLLABUS CTEC COOPERATIVE EDUCATION I -TECHNICIAN CATALOG DESCRIPTION: CTEC 1380 Cooperative Education I - Technician. CIP Career-related activities encountered in the student s area of specialization offered through an individualized agreement among the college, employer, and student. Under the supervision of the college and the employer, the student combines classroom learning with work experience. Class time will focus on work related topics such as safety, self-initiative, goal setting, time management, leadership, communication, team skills, and continuous improvement. Students may register in only one co-op class per semester. (3 SCH, 1 lecture, 20 lab) Prerequisite: Process Op Co-op - Completion of or concurrent enrollment in PTAC 2420, PTAC 1408 and a 2.7 GPA or approval of the division chair. Lab Tech Co-op - Completion of or concurrent enrollment in CTEC 1441 and a 2.7 GPA or approval of the division chair. COURSE CONTENT Objectives Students enrolled in the Chemical Technology program must work in a related job in the chemical industry at least 20 hours per week with satisfactory evaluations by the coordinator and the job supervisor. Job Site Objectives A. Perform satisfactorily on the job in the following areas: 1. Concern for safety 2. Dependability 3. Adaptability 4. Job attitude 5. Technical ability 6. Productivity/quality/continuous improvement 7. Initiative and accepting responsibility 8. Acceptance of constructive criticism 9. Human relation skills (employee/employee, employer/employee) 10. 9 BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS CTEC COOPERATIVE EDUCATION I -TECHNICIAN IV. LEARNING OUTCOMES CTEC 1380 OUTCOMES Student will record a biweekly job report form on job activities and learning experiences. Student and supervisor will prepare a list of goals to be accomplished in the co-op position. Student will complete written assignments in reference to "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Steven Covey. Students will have a C or better on their performance evaluation. METHOD OF ASSESSMENT Grade reports for completion Goals turned into coordinator Grade on assignments Grade from performance evaluation SCANS Competencies: The Secretary Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) identified competencies in the area of Resources, Interpersonal, Information, Systems, and Technology; and foundation skills in the areas of Basic Skills, Thinking Skills, and Personal Qualities. This course is part of a program in which each of these competencies and skills are integrated. The following is a list of applications of specific SCANS competencies and skills in this course. 9
10 Competency Reference SCANS COMPETENCIES CTEC 1380 Application 1. Resource Time Management Facilities/ Management Human Resources Productivity and time management is discussed in lecture as well as being emphasized on the job as part of the supervisor s evaluation. The students will do an evaluation of their performance as well as their supervisor s. They are made aware of equipment and material resources, budgets, etc. at their job. 2. Interpersonal Leadership Participation as Team Member Works with Diversity 3. Information Acquiring Organizing Interpreting 4. Systems, Understanding Organizational Systems Technological Systems Social Systems Leadership and interpersonal relations are discussed in lecture. The students are evaluated on their human relation skills at their job. Utilizing data is discussed in lecture. The co-op jobs will typically require the student to acquire, organize and interpret data that is part of their evaluation. Students will be evaluated on their job performance at midterm and at the end of each semester of the internship. The supervisor or the college coordinator will review these evaluations with the student and suggest ways of improving their performance. The student will develop their own personal goals for improving their performance. Continuous improvement will be discussed in the lecture. 5. Technology Selecting Applying Maintaining The student will be required at their job to operate a variety of technical instruments. This will involve not only operation but some maintenance and troubleshooting as the student becomes more familiar with the equipment. The student will be evaluated at the end of each semester on their technical ability. 6. Basic Skills Reading, Writing Mathematics Speaking, Listening Students are typically required at their co-op jobs to: read various job procedures, manuals, and reports; make written reports; perform mathematical calculations on lab data; and communicate effectively with their supervisor and co-workers. 7. Thinking Skills Decision Making Problem Solving Learning Techniques 8. Personal Qualities Responsibility Sociability Integrity/ Honesty Thinking skills and problem solving are discussed in lecture. Learning skills are discussed on how to adapt to a new job. The student is evaluated on adaptability and decision making. Personal confidence, accepting responsibility, human relations, and integrity are discussed in the lecture and are part of the student s performance evaluation.

Distance learning activities will focus on work related topics such as safety, self-initiative, goal setting, time management, leadership, communication, team skills, and continuous improvement. 13 ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES Distance learning class attendance is not graded, but you must participate in the class to successfully complete the course. If you are unable to complete this course, you must complete and submit a withdrawal form with the registrar. If you stop participating in the class and do not withdraw, you will receive a performance grade, usually an F. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY 1. Students enrolled in the Chemical Technology program must work in a related job in the chemical industry at least 20 hours per week with satisfactory evaluations by the job supervisor. 2. Students must also participate in the on-line portion of the course with satisfactory evaluation by the distance learning coordinator.
