1 CHM Chemistry Fundamentals 1A Fall 2015 Instructor: Dr. Melanie Beazley Office: Physical Sciences Building Class Meetings: Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30 pm 5:50 pm in PSY 108 Office Hours: Course Objective: Required Materials: Optional Materials: Grading Summary: Tuesdays: 9:00 am 11:00 am Thursdays: 10:00 am 12:00 pm Or by appointment To provide a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts of chemistry including units of measurement, classification of matter, atomic structure, atomic theory, the periodic table, chemical bonds, molecules, ions, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, and thermochemistry Textbook: Chemistry: A Molecular Approach (3 rd Edition) by Nivaldo J. Tro Scientific calculator: No graphing or programmable calculators will be allowed during exams Pink ScanTron test form with UCF logo for each exam iclicker2 Transmitter Supplemental study guide: Chemistry Fundamentals 1A by Patino Mastering Chemistry online supplement (course ID MCBEAZLEY05151) 4 Exams (100 points each) 400 points 1 Final Exam 200 points 4 Quizzes (25 points each) 100 points Total 700 points Four exams will be given during the regularly scheduled class time and worth 100 points each. The final exam will last 2 hours 50 minutes and be worth 200 points. If you have not missed any exams, the percentage grade of your final will replace your lowest exam grade (if higher). All exams will be cumulative with a computer-graded multiplechoice format. Five fifteen-minute quizzes will be given during the semester using the iclicker. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Quizzes will not be cumulative and will be worth 25 points each. In-class extra credit opportunities will be provided periodically throughout the semester without prior notice. 1

2 Exams: Grading Scale: For each exam the student should bring: Their student ID A clean, flat, pink ScanTron test form with the UCF logo Number 2 pencil Scientific calculator no graphing or programmable calculators will be allowed during exams. Use of any electronic devices (such as tablets, phones, ipods, laptops) during exams is strictly prohibited. Any use of such devices will be considered cheating and result in a grade of 0 for that exam. The +/- system will not be used in this class. Letter grades will be based on four quizzes, four exams, and a final exam. Grade distribution will be as follows: % A % B % C % NC % F Make-up Policy: Attendance Policy: Webcourses: Student Required Academic Activity: You can access your scores at any time using the Grades section of Webcourses@UCF. If you miss an exam, the percentage score from your final exam will be substituted for the missed exam. Quiz make-ups will not be given. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. See the instructor in advance if you will miss an exam or quiz for a university-sponsored event, jury duty, or military service. Attendance in class will not be recorded. However, you must be present to take exams, quizzes, and to take advantage of opportunities for extra credit. Webcourses is an online management system (accessed through my.ucf.edu and then the Online Course Tools tab) that will be used to access grades and additional information for the course. As of Fall 2014, all faculty are required to document students academic activity at the beginning of each course. This academic activity must be completed by the end of the first week of classes or as soon as possible after adding the course, but no later than August 28 by 5:00 pm EST. Failure to do so may result in a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid. Take the syllabus quiz in Webcourses by 5:00 pm EDT on Friday, August 28,

3 iclicker Policy and Procedures: We will be using the iclicker2 feedback system in every lecture to provide an interactive classroom environment. Be prepared to click in your answers to the questions posed. These questions will be primarily used for the student s learning enhancement and will not be used for grades. However, all quizzes will be given using the iclicker format and will count toward your grade. Registration: Register your iclicker in Webcourses under the iclicker tab. Policy: The following policies will apply to the use of iclickers in the course: Students are responsible for registering their own clicker ID in Webcourses no later than the first week of class. iclickers must be registered at the start of the semester even if it was registered in a previous semester. Should a student replace an iclicker during the semester, the student is responsible for registering the new iclicker and informing the instructor. Using two iclickers during quizzes is prohibited. If a student clicks in for another student who is not in the classroom during the quiz, both students will face disciplinary actions. If a student fails to bring their iclicker to class on the day of the quiz, they will not receive credit for that quiz. Note: the iclicker can be used in other classes if it is the same version/generation. Check with your other instructors to be sure.
