7 AIMS OF THE DOCUMENT The aims of this document are to: define the structure of MA Creative and Media Education; specify the programme award titles; identify programme and unit learning outcomes; articulate the regulations governing the awards defined within the document. AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME MA Creative & Media Education (MACME) is aimed at teachers of media and creative subjects, at all levels, as well as those working in educational support roles. The MA Creative & Media Education builds upon the Faculty of Media & Communication s reputation for leadership in the teaching of media, as demonstrated by the awards of Centre for Excellence in teaching and learning. MACME also builds our education provision in an area of discipline strength. The programme also aligns with the Faculty s aim to provide a range of executive masters programmes which appeal to professionals and are delivered on a part time basis. MA Creative & Media Education is aimed directly at teachers of media and allied creative subjects, and those who support learning/training, in these fields. The MA is part of a suite of programmes offered in CEMP, which also includes the Masters short-course framework, and our Doctorate of Education Programme (EdD). The Centre is also home to the Journal of Media Practice (JMP) and the Media Education Research Journal (MERJ). CEMP also convenes the annual International Media Education Summit (MES). MACME is designed to enable students who would not be able to attend a full-time masters programme to engage in advanced study in order to further their professional careers. Students will continue to work, and indeed their workplace experiences are central to their study. The model of learning that underpins the programme is one of self-directed, critical learners who are able to reflect on their learning and work in collaboration with others. There are four types of learning activity at the heart of the programme: Research, Skills Development, Innovation and Exhibition. As students progress through the award, they will negotiate activities, review new areas of their professional context, and identify a pathway for development. As part of the programme, students will work with other students to consider their working practices. They will develop new skills and understandings to help them become more effective in their work and to enable them to influence and improve media pedagogic practice in their schools and colleges. The aim of MACME is to provide students with knowledge and skills relating to both current debates and practices in the creative industries, and the teaching and learning of media, through sustained professional enquiry. This will result in students developing as critical, knowledgeable and responsible leaders of creative and media education, capable of initiating, developing and embedding new understandings and techniques in the classroom. 7
8 EMPLOYABILITY STRATEGY All MACME students will be already in employment in education practice, or in an educational support role, when joining the programme this is a condition of entry. However, MACME does offer significant professional development opportunities, and graduates often move sector after completing the programme. For example, for some graduates in educational support roles such as those working in learning technology, libraries or museums MACME can facilitate a move into teaching. Similarly, the programme can support the move into Higher Education, for those working in sixth form colleges/further Education. For graduates already working in Higher Education, MACME can facilitate a move into a more researchfocused career at the time of writing, six MACME graduates are registered doctoral students (both PhD and EdD) with us, and we expect at least two more in the next EdD cohort. ALIGNMENT WITH THE UNIVERSITY S STRATEGIC PLAN The review of MA Creative & Media Education supports the Faculty s strategic vision of creating, sharing and inspiring and the BU2018 fusion strategy of research, education and practice and the idea of creating a new academic experience where the sum is greater than the component parts by: - embedding professional practice throughout the curriculum all MACME students are working professional education practitioners, or are in allied educational support roles; - to provide high-quality professional development for teachers of creative and media subjects, in schools, colleges and universities; - to offer students publication opportunities in the Media Education Research Journal (MERJ): - to facilitate presentation opportunities at CEMP s annual International Media Education Summit: - to act as a route of entry onto BU s Doctor of Education (Creative & Media): LEARNING HOURS AND ASSESSMENT Bournemouth University taught programmes are composed of units of study, which are assigned a credit value indicating the amount of learning undertaken. The minimum credit value of a unit is normally 20 credits, above which credit values normally increase at 20-point intervals. 20 credits is the equivalent of 200 study hours required of the student, including lectures, seminars, assessment and independent study. 20 University credits are equivalent to 10 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits. As a general rule, time devoted to assessment should normally represent approximately 25% of the student learning time for a unit (i.e. 50 hours for a 20-credit unit), leaving the rest for specific programme-related activities, including lectures, 8
9 seminars, preparatory work, practical activities, reading, critical reflection and independent learning. Of the time devoted to assessment, every 10 hours of student effort is equivalent to approximately 1,000 words of coursework or 1 hour of examination. Therefore, as a guideline, a 20-credit unit would normally require the equivalent of approximately 5,000 words in total (e.g. a 2,000-word written coursework and a 3-hour unseen examination). The assessment strategy is one which recognises the work that those working in educating do in their professional lives. Students are therefore able to negotiate each assessment with tutors, in which will make positive educational interventions in their own professional contexts. MACME students are never working on more than one assessment at a time, and are encouraged to view their own places of work as active field sites, for a series of participatory action research projects. The Learning Facilitator will work with the student to identify appropriate learning resources and reflection and action inquiry opportunities, in order to enable the student to explore the boundaries of their discipline, and to embed their findings in their professional practice. This is further developed through student-centred learning that explores particular topics in more depth. Further reading and focused discussion are also key elements of cognitive/subject based knowledge acquisition. Assessment will be through submission of a portfolio. In particular, subject knowledge and understanding will be assessed by professional presentations using an approach / medium appropriate to the student s work as well as an exhibition and evaluative commentary. STAFF DELIVERING THE PROGRAMME Students will usually be taught by a combination of senior academic staff with others who have relevant expertise including where appropriate according to the content of the unit academic staff, qualified professional practitioners, demonstrators/ technicians and research students. 9
