1 Chestermere High School Physical Education Program Physical Education Philosophy: Physical activity is vital to all aspects of normal growth and development with widely recognized benefits. We, as PE staff want to enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead a healthy, active lifestyle through a variety of activities and personal success. Also, we believe that regular attendance is necessary to achieve success in Physical Education. Evaluation: ALL PE classes at Chestermere High School will be evaluated in the following manner: PE PE 30 Fitness Component 20% Leadership Hours 20% Written Work 20% Written Work 20% Attitude 30% Attitude 30% Social Skills 30% Social Skills 30% Students will: Acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities; dance, games, individual activities and activities in an alternative environment. Ie. Aquatics and Outdoor Pursuits Understand, experience, and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity Interact positively with others Assume responsibility to lead an active way of life Leadership: PE 30 All PE 30 students are required to complete 10 hours of volunteer activities. This will include the organization and implementation of the lunch hour intramural program by officiating and setting up equipment for the lunch hour. Scorekeeping volleyball, basketball and tournaments as well as doing lines at a soccer match or football are options. Equipment room manager and doing the laundry complete the activities. To be successful in PE: Students need to: Come to class on time everyday and dressed! Exceed class expectations Work your hardest (you should leave every class sweating) Complete the 10/20 minute run to the best of your ability in PE10 & PE20 Have a good attitude and socialize with others in a positive way Listen carefully to instructions and follow them! PE 30 students require 10 leadership hours to complete.

2 PE Expectations: 1. Students are required to be changed for all PE classes. Students without proper gym attire will be given spare clothes to wear. If there are no spare clothes, students will be subject to the UNCHANGED POLICY. 2. Appropriate gym attire includes: Gym runners with non-marking soles, athletic shorts (to the knee, NO spandex or short shorts) or sweat pant and appropriate T-shirts (NO tank tops or sleeveless tops). 3. Students will not be allowed to bring backpacks into the gym. Backpacks should be placed in school lockers. They should not be left in changeroom. 4. All jewelry must be locked up in the student s locker; no jewelry is permitted in class. Also, please spit out GUM and CHEW before class. 5. CELL PHONES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE TO HAVE IN CLASS. Students that have brought a cell phone to class will lose marks as they are not meeting classroom expectations. They are acceptable during the fitness run only. Students can bring cell phones on bus for PE AWAY but cannot be on it during activity. 6. STREET SHOES are NOT PERMITTED on the gym floor at any time. These include: flip flops, dress shoes, high heels, and boots. We take pride in our floors and they bring in unnecessary rocks and dirt that scratch the finish on the floor. 7. Vaping is not allowed on school premises. Students should respect each other s space and keep the changerooms a clean environment. 8. Students are expected to participate in every class to the BEST of their ability. If you are injured, a parent note is required. If a student is unable to participate for 3 classes or more, a doctor s note is required. If a student misses a day of class it is THEIR responsibility to get a makeup assignment from their teacher as per Rockyview School Division policy. 9. Students who are unable to participate will be asked to help out in some way or given an assignment to make up for their daily evaluation mark. 10. Students are expected to read the PE schedule to know which gym they are in for the day. 11. If you have any medical issues, please discuss them with your teacher. If you have asthma and a puffer, it is the students responsibility to bring them INTO the gym for EVERY class. 12. Teachers will have all marks posted every 2 weeks. Check Power-school for updates. 13. It is MANDATORY for all students to have their belongings locked in a tote in the locker room. Students will be issued a locker in one of the change rooms. The lock is due back at the end of the semester. Any unsecure items in the change room have a very good chance of being stolen. 14. Students are required to clean their locker out on the last day of the semester. Locks will be removed the following day. Please ensure you have contacted your teacher if you are unable to be at school to collect your items

3 Appeals The school evaluation of an individual student may be appealed within 14 days of the final mark directly to your teacher. Any further appeals go to the principal by March 31 or August 31 of the appropriate semester. Chestermere High School PE Unchanged Policy Students who do not bring appropriate PE clothing (including shoes) will NOT be permitted to do homework during class, but will be subject to the following policy: Unchanged Incidents Chestermere Policy for students who are unchanged for PE class PE assignment and warning Complete assignment 1 and hand in at END of class PE assignment and 2 nd warning Complete assignment 2 and hand in at END of class Next unchanged is a phone call home PE assignment, final warning Complete written assignment 3 and hand in at END of class Teacher calls home to parent Student sent to see Administration Teacher fills in discipline form Administration calls home One day out of class suspension- complete Assignment 4 Student sent to see Administration Teacher fills in discipline form Administration calls home May result in an in school suspension Student sent to see Administration Teacher fills in discipline form Administration calls home May result in an out of school suspension Teacher Evaluation Maximum Student Self Assessment mark the day (5 from attitude, 5 2/2 from social skills) the day (5 from attitude, 5 from social skills) 2/2 the day (5 from attitude, 5 from social skills) 1/1 the day (5 from attitude, 5 from social skills) 1/1 the day (5 from attitude, 5 from social skills) 0/0 the day (5 from attitude, 5 from social skills) 0/0 Long Term Assignments/Extended Absence: Will be given to students who are injured and unable to participate for a significant length of time or are going to be away for an extended absence. A doctor s note is required for a Long-Term Assignment and Principal approval is necessary for the Extended Absence.

4 Chestermere High School Physical Education Attendance Policy The Physical Education staff believe that regular attendance is essential for students to demonstrate their ability and to do their best work. Staff also agree that Physical Education classes are different from other classes in that PE is a participation-based class. Students are awarded participation marks for attending each and every class in other words, students earn marks through their attendance. If a student does not attend, it is difficult for them to earn marks. In the event of an absence, regardless of the reason, students WILL NOT be awarded any participation marks from the teacher evaluation (5 marks deducted from Attitude, 5 marks deducted from Social Skills). However, students may make up THEIR portion of the mark through written assignments. Students must see their teacher immediately after the absence to obtain the written material and this assignment will be due the following day. They can also check the school website at chestermerehg.rockyview.ab.ca to obtain these assignments. If the student does not obtain these assignments, a mark of 0 will be given for the day of the absence in the student self evaluation portion of assessment. After 5 absences, regardless of the reason, students MAY NOT make up their portion of the mark through a written assignment. Physical Education Rules Each day your PE teacher will evaluate your attitude and social skills based on a number of what would be considered desired behaviors. Should you not demonstrate this desired behavior, 5 marks will be deducted from the 25 marks you earn in a 2 week period. The following are possible deductions in each category: Attitude: 1. Unchanged, Not Participating, No Note 2. Late for class 3. Cell Phone, jewelry, Gum, Food, Drink, 4. Lack of effort. NOT ENGAGED in class activity. Spectator presence. 5. Not doing drills or class routine properly (including not securing valuables in the change-room), or misuse of equipment 6. Skip class, was asked to leave class or leaving early Social Skills: 7. Distracting instructor or class during instruction 8. Foul Language/ Put downs 9. Unchanged, Not Participating, No Note 10. Continuous use of cell phone, irresponsible behavior and not concerned about the safety of others 11. Disrespectful, Poor Sportsmanship, Pouting 12. Skip class, was asked to leave class or leaving early 13. Consistently late for class (more than 5 minutes late) The number of the infraction will be written by the student name on the date that the infraction occurred. Students can check with their teacher to find out how many deductions they have received.

Finished fitness in the top third of the class I excelled from the start of class till the end of class I was fully changed for class in my gym strip and on time and active for class I was very respectful and sportsmanlike, being supportive to classmates and the teacher I came to class changed, active and on time I participated without my teacher having to prompt me to be active I followed all instructions I was respectful and sportsmanlike I ran the entire time during fitness (completing all that was asked of me) I was engaged in the skill development and game play I came to class and participated but my teacher had to prompt me to participate My teacher pointed out a short coming during class I only listened to some instructions or interrupted the teacher s instructions I stopped during the fitness time but continued after a rest I ran inside the prescribed lines or did not complete the required amount of repetitions as prescribe by the teacher I was only partially changed for class, or I borrowed clothes from the PE office I was a little late for class I was asked to remove jewelry or spit out my gum I was not respectful or sportsmanlike today I used inappropriate language I came to class and didn t do anything unless my teacher had to prompt me more than once I did not listen to instructions, or was talking during instructions I did not have gym strip to change, I regularly borrow strip to participate I was not respectful or sportsmanlike today I used inappropriate language more than once I was asked to remove jewelry again today I come late to class regularly Absent 0 I was absent but know that I need to get an assignment from my teacher to help make up my mark. 11 PE 30 Leadership Package Requirements: 10 hours Leadership: PE 30 All PE 30 students are required to complete 10 hours of volunteer activities. This will include the: intramural program at lunch, scorekeeping or being a linesman at football, volleyball, basketball, or soccer games. You will be required to attend a session on how to properly score-keep and lines. The equipment room needs to be organized and laundry from both gyms will need to be completed weekly.
