1 ENGR 2210 Fundamental Electronics for Engineers Dr. Oenardi Lawanto 3 credits Fall 2016 Course Description A study and application of DC/AC and digital concepts which include circuit fundamentals, theorems, laws, analysis, components, digital design fundamentals, and combinational circuits design, equipment and measuring devices. The laboratory will include circuit design, construction, analysis, and troubleshooting DC/AC circuits, and the use of measuring instruments, power supplies and signal generators. Course Objectives By completing this course, the students should be able to: 1. Apply Ohm s and Kirchhoff s Laws 2. Analyze DC and AC circuits (series, parallel, and compound) 3. Build and analyze electronic (simple analog and digital) circuits on a proto board 4. Use an oscilloscope, DMM, power supply, and frequency generator Textbook Pearson Custom Electronics Technology (ENGR 2210) Volume 1 and 2 Computer Access You will need to have an up-to-date browser in an operating system to take this course. Check audio and video streaming software and hardware requirements to enable active participation in online discussions. Make sure the computer can read PDF files because some of the documents in this course will be available to you in PDF form. If you do not have access to a computer, there are many computer labs on campus that you can use to participate in this course. Enhanced Guided Notes (EGN) Enhanced guided notes (EGN) are instructor-prepared notes that contain information concerning course topics, but are incomplete. The EGN will be posted on Canvas to allow students to print and fill in the missing information during lectures. They may consist of essential concepts, ideas, diagrams, graphs, problems to solve, and conclusions that can be made. These are not mandatory, but are highly recommended for this course. EGN are not a substitute for reading the textbooks. All the information found in the textbooks can NOT be covered in class. You are responsible to keep up your reading. Homework The due dates for homework are on the table below. Please complete assignments using engineering paper. Check on Canvas for the format and guidelines file explaining how to submit homework. Submitted homework without proper format or solution derivations will not be graded. Homework will be due every Friday except homework for EGN#7 due date is Thursday 10/20; homework for EGN#10 due date is Monday 11/14; and homework for EGN#11 due date is Monday 11/28. Homework due dates can be subject to change depending on when we complete the discussion in class. We will check for homework completeness but we will only grade some of the homework problems. Late homework will not be accepted because the two lowest homework scores will be dropped. Laboratory The due dates for labs are on the table Tentative Labs at the end of the syllabus. Laboratory activities are mandatory and students must participate in these activities. Students must attend the lab section for which they are registered. Students must arrive on time with a hard copy of the lab printed prior to arriving. A student will not be permitted to make up labs unless the absence is excusable (i.e., illness or emergency). 1

2 Exams There will be 3 regular 50 minute exams throughout the semester. Tentative dates for these are listed in the schedule below. Exams will be multiple choice using Scantron answer sheets. You are required to bring a #2 pencil to each exam. Pencils will NOT be provided. Cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a grade of F for that particular test. The comprehensive final examination is scheduled for o Date: Wednesday, December 14, 2016 o Time: 1:30 p.m. 3:20 p.m. o Place: Engineering 103 Questions and Answers () sessions are question and answer sessions. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the material, theory, and examples shown in normal lecture time. A 10 minute session will also be available at the beginning of every laboratory session. Help Sessions Help session will be provided to allow opportunity for further questions. Help sessions will be held in ENGR 240 each Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m., except 10/21, 11/25 and the week of finals. A general review will be held in class 12/7. Help sessions are optional, but are very beneficial to learn the vast material covered in this class in the time given. It will give you the opportunity to see more example problems that won t be shown during normal lecture time. Learning Resources In this section in Canvas you can find different resources that may help you better learn the content of every topic discussed in the class. Although they are not mandatory, you are strongly encouraged to review any of those resources that are relevant to your need: 1. Video Presentations. All of the topics addressed in this course are covered by video lectures. These videos are posted on Canvas to allow students to play, stop, rewind, and replay as many times as needed to improve upon the live classroom experience. Additional recordings of solved problems will be posted on Canvas to reinforce the content of the EGNs. 2. Self-Evaluation Quizzes. Throughout the semester, students will have the opportunity to take a selfevaluation quiz based on the content of each EGN. You will not receive points for the self-evaluation quizzes, but you are encouraged to take the quizzes in order to improve your understanding of the material covered by each EGN. 3. Problem-Solving Videos. There are additional, homework-like problems posted that will help you understand the problem solving strategies you will use in the assigned problems. 4. Homework Solutions. The homework solutions will be posted on Canvas after your assignments have been collected. You can use these to check your solution strategies. 5. Did You Know YouTube Videos. These informative videos will extend your understanding and seek to ground what you are learning with practical applications. Electronic Supplies The laboratory experiments for this course will require electronic supplies (one set per group). The teaching assistants (TA) will provide you these electronic supplies during lab activities. Please be careful with the instruments you are using in the laboratory. Make sure you ask your lab assistants to check your circuit before connecting it to the power supply. You are responsible for any damage you cause. 2

4 Grading Policy Homework 20% Laboratory (7 labs) 25% Examinations (3 exams) 30% Final Examination 25% Homework will be assigned regularly and graded. See Tentative Class Schedule below for details. Check your scores frequently on Canvas, and keep your graded reports of homework and lab scores for further reference. Any report of inaccurate scores posted on Canvas after 12/9 will not be accepted. Accommodations for Persons with Disabilities If a student has disability that requires some accommodation by the instructor, the student must contact the instructor and document the disability through the Disability Resource Center during the first week of the course.
