1 Catholic Education Archdiocese of Brisbane POSITION STATEMENT TEACHER-LIBRARIAN This Position Statement documents ways in which a Teacher-Librarian may enact their role and is to be read in conjunction with the document entitled Role Description Teacher which is the overarching Role Description for all Teachers within Catholic Education Archdiocese of Brisbane

3 1 POSITION TITLE Teacher-Librarian Catholic Education Archdiocese of Brisbane POSITION STATEMENT 2 PURPOSE OF POSITION The Teacher-Librarian supports and implements the vision of the school community through building effective library, information and digital literacy services and programs that contribute to the development of lifelong learning. The Teacher-Librarian partners and collaborates with teachers in the development of curriculum and pedagogy and manages the library and information resources and services of the school. The Teacher-Librarian contributes to the growth of students as independent, interdependent lifelong learners. 3 KEY RESULT AREAS In partnership with colleagues and through the support of the Archdiocese of Brisbane the Teacher-Librarian in a Catholic school is required to: Mission/Ethos Demonstrate an understanding of, commitment to, and support for the values and ethos of the Catholic school and the mission of the Catholic Church Professional Practice Collaboratively develop, implement and evaluate curriculum with teachers and school leaders within a contemporary learning environment to challenge learners to engage effectively with literature and develop digital and information literacy Professional Engagement Develop, manage and lead a contemporary digital and information rich environment with a range of resources and services that support and are responsive to the needs of the school community Professional Learning Maintain currency of professional knowledge and skills to actively participate in and contribute to school renewal processes and growth of professional communities. 4 4 STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY The library resource centre and the services it provides are integral to the school community and to the experience of learning for students and teachers. The Teacher-Librarian is committed to: the growth of students as independent, interdependent lifelong learners the integration of digital and information literacy skills and processes into curriculum programs the development of resource collections, both print and digital, information and digital systems and services which promote equity of access to information resourcing a contemporary curriculum and pedagogy fostering the spirit of inquiry in an environment supportive of a diversity of learners and learning styles, and the promotion and encouragement of an appreciation of literature and reading. 5 SCOPE OF THE POSITION The role of the Teacher-Librarian is fulfilled in both part-time and full-time capacities in Brisbane Catholic Education schools. MISSION/ETHOS Demonstrate an understanding of, commitment to, and support for the values and ethos of the Catholic school and the mission of the Catholic Church Examples may include: collaborate with others in support of the ethos and mission of the Catholic school to bring about the integration of faith, life and culture contribute to the development of the whole person in an environment permeated by gospel values collaborate in the development of resource collections that support the religious education program and the religious life of the school support and participate in the religious life of the school establish positive relationships including engagement in the pastoral care of students and supporting their spiritual and moral development establish a welcoming environment which facilitates both recreational and formal learning and equitable access. 2 POSITION STATEMENT TEACHER-LIBRARIAN FEBRUARY 2012
5 PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE Collaboratively develop, implement and evaluate curriculum with teachers and school leaders within a contemporary learning environment to challenge learners to engage effectively with literature and develop digital and information literacy Examples may include: work collaboratively with teachers and school leaders to identify curriculum and learning needs collaborate with others to plan, resource and provide learning experiences, which incorporate digital and information literacy skills and processes select and promote resources to facilitate student learning within a contemporary curriculum engage and empower students to read, view, listen and respond for understanding and enjoyment employ a variety of teaching strategies to provide appropriate instruction to meet the diverse needs of individuals or groups develop and access resources to support equity of educational opportunities for all students promote high quality literature and authors to all learners through specific activities provide assistance and guidance to readers participate as a member of school curriculum committees as negotiated evaluate student learning, library programs and services to inform professional practice. PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT Develop, manage and lead a contemporary, digital and information rich environment with a range of resources and services that support and are responsive to the needs of the school community Examples may include: contribute to the growth of students as lifelong learners engage with teachers and school leaders collaboratively to support student learning develop a knowledge and rich understanding of the school community apply comprehensive understanding of information, resources and technology to manage and develop collections and services FEBRUARY 2012 POSITION STATEMENT TEACHER-LIBRARIAN 3
6 actively foster and promote literature for learning, enjoyment and appreciation collaborate with teachers to incorporate appropriate literature as a cross curricula resource develop and promote information services to the whole school community promote a developmental approach to digital and information literacy development across the curriculum. establish and promote, in collaboration with others, a positive digital citizen culture demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills and a capacity for communication and liaison develop policies, procedures and criteria for selecting resources (print, electronic, digital) so that the curriculum, information and recreational needs of students are met plan and manage a budget administer the library management and electronic information systems coordinate the roles of library staff and volunteers. PROFESSIONAL LEARNING Maintain currency of professional knowledge and skills to actively participate in and contribute to school renewal processes and the growth of professional communities Examples may include: advocate the development of digital and information literacy as a key competency for learning in a digital age through raising staff awareness of the need to acquire such skills model and promote lifelong learning maintain a sound knowledge of current educational pedagogy demonstrate a thorough understanding of learning and teaching across the curriculum demonstrate leadership within school and professional communities actively participate in education and professional networks contribute to the professional development of staff maintain currency of knowledge with regard to information resources, technology, literature, curriculum and pedagogy. 4 POSITION STATEMENT TEACHER-LIBRARIAN FEBRUARY 2012
7 6 AUTHORITY LIMITS Full authority is delegated from the Principal to produce the desired outcomes. 7 REPORTING AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS The Teacher-Librarian is responsible to, and reports on all aspects of the role to the principal. 8 Archdiocese of Brisbane ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA TEACHER-LIBRARIAN Applicants applying for the position of Teacher-Librarian in a Brisbane Catholic Education school must meet the following eligibility criteria: willingness and commitment to support the mission and ethos of Catholic education hold current registration with the Queensland College of Teachers be eligible to work in Australia for the duration of the appointment hold recognised tertiary qualifications in librarianship as recognised by Brisbane Catholic Education e.g. as accredited by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) experience as a Teacher. Desirable Criteria: Teaching experience of at least 5 years. DUTY STATEMENT Duty Statements are optional but can be used by the Principal and roleholder to allow differential levels of role enactment to suit the particular school/ college context. 6 POSITION STATEMENT TEACHER-LIBRARIAN FEBRUARY 2012
