1 Spring 2018 English 2326 Instructor Information Deidra Dallas ext Course Description, Outcomes, and Objectives ENG 2326 is a study of diverse works by American writers. Emphasis on reading, comprehending, appreciating, and thinking critically about the selected works within the context of American culture and literary history. At the end of this course you should: understand the role of American literature as an expression of national values and an interpretation of the American experience; understand the interaction among American history, culture, and literature; understand the scope and variety of American literature, including its various forms; understand and be able to explain the function of American literature as a definer of national identity and an index of American values; be able to define the terms neo-classicism, romanticism, realism, naturalism, modernism, and post-modernism and other terms related to genre study and literary analysis; understand and apply basic methods of literary analysis. In an effort to help you achieve the learning outcomes above, I have prepared lessons, readings, and class assignments, listed in the pages below, that will help you Develop a basic sense of the scope and variety of literary forms and of the changing interests and assumptions of authors across time Gain factual knowledge about academic writing (the terminology of academic writing) Learn to analyze and critically evaluate ideas, arguments, and points of view. Required Materials All reading will be supplied to you on Blackboard or via textbooks owned by BHS. 2 Spring 2018 English 2326 Grading Quizzes 10% Oz Project 20% Midterm 1 10% Author Paper 20% Midterm 2 10% Final Exam 20% Midterm 3 10% TOTAL 100% ASU Core Curriculum Objectives: English 2326 Students in sophomore literature will practice the following core curriculum learning objectives in critical thinking, communication, social responsibility, and personal responsibility. Students will then demonstrate their capabilities in these objectives through reading quizzes, written analyses, or examinations. Critical thinking will be demonstrated in reading quizzes, written analyses, or examinations Students will gather, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information relevant to a question or issue by mastering a series of assigned literary works in terms of generic conventions and content. Communication will be demonstrated in reading quizzes, written analyses, or examinations. Students will develop, interpret, and express ideas through effective written communication. Social responsibility will be demonstrated in written reflection on public reading or lecture. Students will demonstrate ability to engage with locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally known literary artists and the texts they create, and to reflect upon the shared traditions of literary expression, the debates that help shape literature, and the conflicts, cultural differences, and shared experiences. Personal responsibility will be demonstrated in reading quizzes, written analyses, or examinations. Students will demonstrate the ability to evaluate choices, actions and consequences by identifying, analyzing, and evaluating ethical decision-making in literary examples. English Syllabus Spring

3 Spring 2018 English 2326 Policies and Procedures As this is a college level course you are expected to keep up with all course work and stay on top of your schedule. No late work will be accepted. Therefore, it is your responsibility to turn in any and all work before you expect to be gone. The only exception will be in the case of medical emergency, and a doctor s note must be provided. This means, football, basketball, baseball, and softball games, band competitions, UIL activities, theatre productions, track meets, FFA events, and all other extracurricular activities do not excuse you from homework or due dates. You have a schedule -- make note of assignment due dates on your personal schedule. Electronic malfunction will not be an excuse for late work. DO NOT wait until the last possible second to submit an assignment. If you have an issue, make sure to contact me ASAP so that we can discuss your options. Make sure that it gets turned in somehow, some way. Quizzes There will be periodic quizzes throughout the semester over reading assignments. Some reading assignments will NOT be covered by ME. You are still responsible for knowing the information and will be tested on it. In some cases, you will be given collective class time to work together on these assignments. We will have frequent Socratic Circle discussions and your participation in these discussions will be documented and used as a part of your grade. If you have failed to complete your reading, you will not be able to participate, and therefore you will not receive a positive grade. Grammar Assignments Each week we will discuss a different grammatical concept. These will be graded and included in the quizzes category of your grade. Oz Project We will read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, watch the film The Wizard of Oz, and read : The Life and Times of the Witch of the West. After completing these assignments, you will write an analytical essay comparing and contrasting the characters, symbols, themes, etc. from all three works. Author Paper All of you will be assigned a different author from American Literature. You will be responsible for researching this person s background and writing and teaching the class about them when we reach that point in the syllabus. You will also turn in an analytical essay discussing what you have learned. English Syllabus Spring

4 Spring 2018 English 2326 Midterms/Final Exam You will have several midterms during the course of the semester. Your final exam for the semester and will be an in-class essay test taken during the final exam time period. The final will be the week of May 7. Plagiarism Plagiarism is defined as using ideas and information from other sources without giving appropriate credit to the original sources. Plagiarism includes taking information from people you do not know (the Internet) and from people you do know (your friends). Study groups are permissible, but only if each student turns in an original document of their own. If you are caught plagiarizing, you will receive a zero on the assignment, and you could possibly receive a failing grade in the course. Additional discipline could involve letters being placed in your permanent file and action taken by Western Texas College resulting in a possible suspension or expulsion. Also note that even accidental plagiarism is considered plagiarism, so when in doubt CITE EVERYTHING. The Internet makes it easy for you to plagiarize, but it also makes it easy for me to catch you plagiarizing. Be aware that I am well versed in the use of Google, and catching you is as easy as Googling a sentence from your paper. Everyone has a unique writing style. If something does not sound like you, I will check it. Do not test me. Academic Honesty Angelo State University students shall maintain complete honest and integrity in their academic pursuits.
