1 CompassLearning Odyssey TM Preview Guide This CompassLearning guide was designed to support an introductory preview of the CompassLearning Odyssey Manager, CompassLearning Explorer TM, and CompassLearning Odyssey curriculum. This guide is divided into three sections to best focus on your objective: Part I Preview curriculum and assessment (teacher user names/password) Part II Preview management functionality (teacher user names/password) Part III Preview student view (student user names/passwords) To begin the preview, go to: There is a link on the district page under the students tab. Before logging in, you may wish to view the system requirements by clicking on System Requirements at the bottom of the login screen. Click your browser s back button to return to the login screen. Information before you begin: At the login screen type your teacher user name and password [leave the school Odyssey]. Click Login to go to the Teacher Launch Pad. 1 P a g e

2 Introduction to Teacher Launch Pad At any time you can click on Home [return to Home page], or Logout [return to Login screen]. The top buttons represent the 4 main sections of the manager: Set Up, Assignments, Reports, and Content. Note: Assignments, Reports, and Content have pull-down menus to allow direct access to specific components in these sections. The icon buttons on the right of the screen also represent the 4 main sections of the manager: Set Up, Assignments, Reports, and Content. Roll the mouse over each of the icons to see an overview of each section: Setup Create and modify classes. Create students and update teacher information. Assign students to classes. View and maintain student and class information and subject level access. Assignments Create assignments; assign them to your classes and students; and review class and student progress. View, edit, and assign assignments from your school or all schools in your district. Reports Select from a variety of report types such as Administration, Progress, and Assessment, to see how your students are progressing. Content Search and view an index of all CompassLearning curriculum. Read and download CompassLearning Odyssey user guides. 2 P a g e

3 Part I Preview curriculum and assessment Content > Curriculum Index The Curriculum Index displays the CompassLearning Odyssey curriculum and assessment available for building assignments. In the Odyssey Curriculum section of the Curriculum Index you can browse all CompassLearning Odyssey curriculum. You can search broadly by subject and level, then by chapter and lesson. Or, you can narrow your search to specific objectives with the Keyword feature. You can preview activities, lesson quizzes, and chapter tests. In the State Standards section of the Curriculum Index you can browse CompassLearning Odyssey curriculum for chapters, lessons, activities, and lesson quizzes correlated to your state standards. You can search broadly by subject and level, or you can narrow your search to specific objectives with the Keyword feature. You can preview activities and lesson quizzes. In the Explorer section of Curriculum Index you can browse all CompassLearning Explorer objective-based tests and learning paths. You can search broadly by subject and level, or you can narrow your search to specific objectives with the Keyword Feature. You can preview tests, view summaries of test properties, and view learning paths. A. Browse Odyssey Curriculum 1. Click on Content. 2. Select Curriculum Index. 3. Select a subject and then select a level. [A folder tree and a grid appear, displaying chapters for the selected subject and level.] 4. Click Chapter Folders in the tree to view Lesson Folders and descriptions in the grid, along with the Chapter Test. 3 P a g e

4 5. Click Lesson Folders to reveal activities. 6. Click individual activity titles to preview Learning Activities, and Lesson Quizzes. 7. Click the Close box when finished viewing an activity. Click on any icon to preview student ancillary materials to support that activity. [PDF file] Click on any icon to preview teacher guides to support that activity. [PDF file] B. Browse State Standards If already in Curriculum Index, begin with step Click on Content. 2. Select Curriculum Index. 3. Click the State Standards tab. 4. Select the desired subject and level. Click Search. - To narrow your search to specific objectives, type a keyword in the keyword field, and then click Search. 4 P a g e

In the grid that appears, view Chapters, Lessons, Learning Activities, Lesson Quizzes, and Teacher Materials with their state correlations using the vertical scrollbar on the right, the Prev or Next links, or the page number links beneath the grid. 6. Click activity title links to preview Learning Activities and Lesson Quizzes. 7. Click the icons, if available, to view Student Worksheets and Lesson Plans. 8. Click the Close box when finished viewing. C. Browse CompassLearning Explorer Assessment If already in Curriculum Index, begin with step Click on Content. 2. Select Curriculum Index. 3. Select the Explorer tab. 4. Select the desired subject and level. [An expanded tree appears, displaying Strand Folders for the selected subject and level.] 5. You can browse by opening strand folders in the tree to see their contents in a grid. - To narrow your search to specific objectives, type a keyword in the Keyword field. Click Search. 6. In the Grid you can: - Click an Objective-based Test title link to preview the test. Click the X in the top right of the test screen to close the preview test. Click 5 P a g e

6 Details link [in blue] to view a summary of the test properties. Click the close button. - Click a Learning Path title link to view the Prescriptive Folders and preview the Learning Activities and Lesson Quizzes. Click an activity name [in blue] to preview. Click the close button when finished. 7. Click Home. Content > Resources The Resources section provides access to the: - Curriculum Report For viewing relationships among chapters, lessons, and activities - State Correlation Report For viewing correlations by grade level, subject, and state. The State Correlation Report allows you to view, save, and print state correlations for the grade level, subject, and state you select. D. State Correlation Report 1. Click Content. 2. Select Resources. 3. Click State Correlation Report. 4. Click Next to begin a report. 6 P a g e

7 5. Select a grade level, subject, and your state, and click Next. 6. Review your selections and make any changes you want. [If you wish to save the report, enter a name and click Save Report.] 8. Click Generate Report. Click any activity number [in blue] to preview. 7 P a g e

9 Part II Preview management functionality Setup A. Creating a class 1. Click Setup. 2. Under the My Classes tab, click New Class. 3. In the New Class dialog box, enter a name for the class: Type your name and the word class [Smith Class]. 4. Click Save. [The new class will appear in the grid on the right.] B. Creating a new student 1. Click the Student Index tab. 9 P a g e

10 2. Click the New Student button. 3. Type in your first and last name. 4. Select First grade from the pull down menu. 5. User Name: Type the first four letters of your last name, first three letters of their first name and the last 4 digits of their student id number. [example: John Smith = smitjoh5678] 6. Password: School initials and school # Ex RVE Click the Next button. 10 P a g e

11 8. In the Attach Attributes section, click the box for ESL/ESOL/ELL/LEP to check. Click Next. 9. Leave Subject Level Access to the defaults. 10. Click Save. 11. To confirm, enter the student s first, last, or user name in the Name Contains field, click Search, and verify that the student appears in the grid on the right. 11 P a g e

12 C. Adding a student to a class If already in Student Index [from step 11 above], begin with step Click Setup 2. Click the Student Index Tab. 3. Select the desired filters [type in the student s last name]. Click Search. 4. In the student grid that appears, check the student to be added to the class. Click the Add to Class button. 12 P a g e

13 5. In the Add to Class dialog box, select the class to which you want the student added. Click Save. Preview Assignments Options The Assignments section is divided into four areas: Class Progress View class and student progress (in addition to reports). Assignment Builder Build, edit, save, and delete assignments and assign them to your classes and students. Assignment Archive Store your assignments and assignments for your school and/or all district schools. Test Builder Build, edit, and save tests and include them in your assignments. Assignment Builder Assignment Builder allows you to create assignments and assign them to your students and classes. Under the Odyssey Curriculum tab you can browse all CompassLearning Odyssey curriculum for activities, lesson quizzes, and chapter tests for your assignments. You can search broadly by subject and level, or you can narrow your search to specific objectives with the Keyword feature. You can preview all activities, quizzes, and tests. The Create Authentic Task button allows you to create your own authentic tasks for assignment including launching a URL site. D. Building an assignment 1. Click on Assignments. 2. Select Assignment Builder. 3. Click the Curriculum tab if not already selected. There are three ways in which you may build an assignment: a. Odyssey Curriculum Note: For this preview we will be using Odyssey Curriculum to create an assignment. b. State Standards c. Explorer [assessment with learning path 13 P a g e

14 Keyword Search Use the search engine to find specific activities by objective. a. Select Math as the subject. Select Level 3. b. In the Keyword box, type decimals. Click Search. Click any lesson title [in blue] to preview. c. Click in the box [places a check mark] to add to an assignment. 4. Select Odyssey Curriculum. a. Select a subject: Math. b. Select Level 4. c. Click Chapter 4 - Fractions and Decimals. d. Click Lesson 1- Parts of a Set or a Whole. e. Click all four boxes to select the three activities and lesson quiz. f. Click Add Selected Tasks button at the bottom of the screen. 14 P a g e

15 g. Click Complete Assignment button at the bottom of the screen. h. Type a name for your assignment [Smith Fraction Assignment] and use the pull down menu to assign it to Level 4 Math. Make sure Yes is selected to Assign to students now? i. Click Next. j. Select your class by clicking in the box. k. Click Finish. l. Your assignment is complete and assigned to student(s). 15 P a g e

16 Test Builder Test Builder allows you to customize and build objective-based tests and assign them to your students and classes. You can create tests from CompassLearning Explorer or state objectives or by modifying pre-built tests. Changes can be made to the number of objectives for each test and to the test property settings. All tests you create can be saved and edited. E. Build a custom objective-based test 1. Click on Assessments. 2. Select Test Builder. 3. From the pull down menu, choose a Standard Set [either CompassLearning Explorer, or your state if available] and choose a level and subject. For this preview select Level 3 Mathematics. 4. Click Next. 16 P a g e

17 5. Select objectives that you want included in your test by clicking in the box. For this preview select the first five objectives by clicking in their boxes and click Next. 6. Review the selected objectives and click Next. 17 P a g e

18 7. Review the Test Properties, make any changes, and click Next. 8. Type a name for the test [Smith Math 3 Benchmark Test] and an optional message which will display when the student launches the test. Click Next. 9. Review your Test Summary screen, and click Save. 18 P a g e

19 10. Note: You are now actually in Assignment Builder [see above] and can add/remove activities in the Learning Path and Prescriptive Folders, as well as create Authentic Tasks as part of your automatically assigned student learning path. 19 P a g e

20 In the Assignment field, type a name for your assignment [it can be the test name, i.e., Smith Math 3 Benchmark Test], select Sequential order, and click the Complete Assignment button. 11. In the Complete Assignment dialog box, select who should have access to your test [My Assignments], the level and subject [Level 3 Math], and make sure Yes is selected to Assign to students now? 20 P a g e

21 12. Click Next. 13. Select your class by clicking in the box. 14. Click Finish. 15. Your test [assignment] is complete and assigned to student(s). 16. Click Close. 21 P a g e

22 Please Note: You will need to complete Part III - Preview Student View, in order to have data to run the following reports. Login as the student you created and complete the Math 3 Benchmark Test Assignment. Then return here to run your reports. Reports CompassLearning Odyssey s report module enables you to generate, view, and print relevant information. A variety of reports cover areas such as test results, averages, time on task, attendance, and enrollment. Access to different report types is determined by your user type [e.g., teacher, administrator, or multi-school administrator]. The Objective-based Test Results Report provides information about student performances on objective-based tests. You can filter by test or objective and by student or class. Information includes test dates, raw scores, and percentage scores where appropriate. First and last scores can be displayed to show student or class progress. Summaries of the average percentage score for each test are also available. F. Objective-based Test Results Report 1. Click on Reports. 2. Select Assessment Reports. 3. Select Objective-based Test Results. 4. Click Next. 22 P a g e

23 5. Select your test under Test Title by clicking in the box and click Next. 5. Click Objective [to show results for); keep all other choices the same. Click Next. 6. 24 Click Next. 6. Review selections and make any changes by clicking on the Edit button. Click Generate Report (name and save are optional). 24 P a g e

25 The Learning Path Status Report shows the status of activities in a learning path or learning paths prescribed to one or more students you select. The report evaluates a selected test and shows objectives not passed, displaying the objective name(s) and student s score, as well as activities within the corresponding learning path and their scores. G. Learning Path Status Report 1. Click on Reports. 2. Select Progress Reports. 3. Select Learning Path Status. 3. Click Next. 4. Select your assessment assignment under Assignment Title by clicking in the circle. 5. Select the associated learning path by clicking in the box, and click Next. 5. Select your class (on the left) or filter by attributes on the right. Click Next. 6. Review selections and make any changes by clicking on the Edit button. Click Generate Report (name and save are optional). Part III Preview student view Basic Navigation for Students Log into CompassLearning Odyssey as a student [use student user name(s) and password(s)], to see the Student Launch Pad. Students may proceed to the assignments within a subject area by clicking the appropriate icon. Subject icons include Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Brain Buzzers TM, and Thematic Projects. 25 P a g e

26 Assignments An orange icon indicates that tasks within that subject have been assigned to the student. Note: The custom assignments you created above in Part II will be listed here. Please complete the Math 3 Benchmark Test Assignment in order to have data to run reports. Once students click on an assignment icon, the task menu appears. A flashing arrow indicates which chapter, lesson, or learning activity the student should complete next. If the assignment was assigned in sequential mode, the student must complete the chapter, lesson, learning activity, objectivebased test, or learning path with the flashing arrow first. If the assignment was assigned in self-select mode, the arrow indicates the task that students are recommended to complete next, but they can choose another task, if they wish. When a student has completed a learning activity, lesson, chapter, objectivebased test, or learning path the icon will contain a check mark. No Assignments A blue subject icon indicates that there are no assigned learning activities within that subject. When students enter a subject area in which no assignments have been assigned, they will see a blue chapter screen. When they select a chapter, a green lesson screen appears. When students select a lesson, an orange activity screen appears. When a student completes a learning activity, the star activity icon becomes animated. When a student completes a PlayBox Theme Time activity a green check mark appears over the activity icon. General Navigation Tips Access a specific learning activity by entering the learning activity code in the Destination Activity Code field and clicking Go. Click on the Back icon Click the Launch Pad icon Pad. to go back to the previous page. to return to the Student Launch Click the Log Out icon My Portfolio to exit. The My Portfolio icon takes students to their personal portfolios, where they can view information on their assignments. Students can obtain a report of all completed chapter tests, lesson quizzes, learning activities, and objective-based tests. Students can also view any assignments that have been completed, or that they are currently in the process of taking. 26 P a g e
