2 degree. The aim was to create an initial teacher training degree which could potentially be studied while also in full-time employment. Therefore, on this four-year programme, the training is delivered through study weeks and twilight taught sessions by trainers from across the Edge Hill University partnership, complemented by tasks undertaken in a school setting. It provides the opportunity to study for a degree leading to QTS, with Edge Hill University, from anywhere in the North West. The school-based route is suitable for well-experienced trainees who would prefer to spend more time in school and learn while working. We want to recruit trainees who actively demonstrate a strong commitment to primary teaching as a career. You must have an appreciation of the demands of teaching and should have made a conscious decision about your place in the teaching profession. Imagination and resourcefulness to meet the challenges facing today s teachers are essential. 3 Course in Depth What will I study? The course is an innovative school-based training programme designed to ensure that you have opportunities to develop as an outstanding practitioner who is able to make links between theory and practice, and to be trained in a range of highly relevant contexts. How will I study? When you join this school-based programme, you must be employed or volunteering for a minimum of one day per week in a primary school and your Head Teacher will agree to support your progress with the degree for the duration of the course. A number of subject strands run throughout the programme and ensure you will: Learn how to study effectively at university and take charge of your own development. Focusing on how children develop and learn, you will build up the planning, teaching and assessment skills required to become an outstanding classroom teacher; Develop your own knowledge of all of the National Curriculum subjects and study how children learn them. Exploring a range of teaching methods, including the use of computing across the curriculum, the programme will immerse you in providing stimulating, imaginative and effective learning experiences for children; Spend a significant amount of time in school, in a variety of Key Stage 1 and 2 classes, across the length of the programme. You will observe outstanding teachers in action and learn from high quality training, progressing from teaching small groups to teaching a full class on your own as you become more confident in the classroom. The programme includes a major subject specialism in English, Mathematics, Modern Languages or Science. You will also have the opportunity to study a minor specialism (subject to numbers) in one of the following subjects: Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education; English as an Additional Language; Early Years Foundation Stage; Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. You will undertake formally assessed professional practices in your own setting in preparation for a final professional practice in an alternative school. Your pedagogical and subject specific knowledge will be developed through a comprehensive training programme, blending face-to-face university-based learning experiences with online and school-based training. Drawing on Edge Hill University's experience of working with diverse trainees, the University-based sessions will be planned for two weeks (Monday to Friday) each year, typically one week in September and another in July. In addition, you will attend face-to face sessions in the evening approximately six times per term in a partner setting. During these face-to-face sessions you will undertake subject specific training and develop your professional identity as a Trainee Teacher. Following your study weeks, you will complete a range of online learning activities and school-based tasks to develop your independent learning ability. You will also participate in online group tasks to forge professional links with peers and engage in professional dialogue. How will I be assessed? Assessment strategies will include portfolios of school-based work, written assignments, oral presentations, and observations of your teaching in schools. You will be given clear assessment criteria and constructive feedback. There are no formal written examinations as part of the current assessment methods on this programme. 3 Published 20 Nov 2018, 12:25

4 Who will be teaching me? You will be taught by a range of highly qualified and experienced teachers and tutors who are dedicated to excellence in Primary education and who will model high quality practice to enable you to develop your own teaching style. A Great Study Environment Throughout the programme, you will be supported in school by an Edge Hill University Partnership Trainer and also by an Edge Hill University Personal Tutor to ensure that you have a training experience that is tailored towards your individual needs. This will build strong links between theory and practice, so that you can apply pedagogical knowledge in the classroom and reflect upon it immediately. You will be trained in at least two of our partner schools (one of which will be your host school), so that you have contrasting experiences of educational settings and you will be encouraged to reflect upon such differences. 4 Published 20 Nov 2018, 12:25
