Lesson Opener Making Connections Invite children to tell you what they know about putting shapes together to make a larger shape. When you put two shapes together, how do you decide if they fit together? (answers will vary; sample answer: try putting different sides together to see if any fit together) If you put a side of one shape next to a side of the other shape, how do you decide if they can fit together? (the sides should touch evenly and might be the same length) Are You Ready? You could also use sets of tangrams or geoboards for them to explore composing figures. Learning Task Focus on changes that occur when two shapes are composed to make a new, larger shape. Take two shapes. Run your finger along the outline of each figure. How many sides does each figure have? (answers will vary) Take one of the shapes and put the other shape with it. Do the two shapes fit? Explain. (answers will vary) Join the two shapes to make one new, larger shape. Then run your finger along the outside of the shape. How many sides do you find? (answers will vary) Literacy and Mathematics Choose one or more of the following activities. Have children draw a picture of two shapes that are composed to make a new, larger shape. Have them label each of the sides of the larger shape as a side. Have children use only rectangles and triangles to make a picture. 2 Explore Hands On Encourage children to name and describe each pattern block. Some children may know the names trapezoid or rhombus, but they all should be able to name those shapes as s. Read the problem aloud. Pam uses blocks to make this three different ways. Each time she uses a different number of blocks. What are three ways Pam can make the? Point out to children that the same shape appears on the page three times. Have children find one pattern block that is the same shape and size as the shown. What is the color of the single pattern block that you can use to cover the shape in the top box? red Have children color the in the top box red to show it as the red trapezoid pattern block. Next, ask children to find two pattern blocks that they can use to cover the shape in the middle box. What two pattern blocks can you use to cover the shape? Possible answer: blue and triangle Have children draw and color to show the blocks they used. What three blocks can you use to cover the shape in the bottom box? Have children identify the number of sides and vertices of each block. Put the trapezoid and the square together in several different ways to make new polygons. Have children identify the number of sides and vertices for each. You may wish to trace around the blocks to better display each new polygon. Repeat with two different pattern blocks. Ask children which pattern blocks were easiest for them to combine and to explain why. Encourage them to use the blocks to help verbalize their opinions.

3 Model and Draw Combine the shapes to make a new shape that has 4 sides. Share and Show Combine the pattern blocks. Trace the blocks to show the new shape you made. the new shape. Encourage children to turn the blocks over and around to try different ways to put them together. Encourage them to check the number of sides of the new shape before tracing it on their paper. Make sure children understand there may be more than one correct answer. As you go through both exercises, ask: What are some different ways you can put the two blocks together? Describe a new shape you can make. How many sides/vertices does it have? COMMON ERRORS Error Some children may have difficulty finding how to combine the blocks to make a two-dimensional shape with the given attributes Springboard to Learning Ask children to put one red pattern block (trapezoid) on the desk and have them take another trapezoid pattern block and move it around the first block, connecting the sides in different ways. Discuss the new shapes they make each time, counting the number of sides and vertices. Ask children to use pattern blocks to show other ways to make the polygon. Children should color to show how they put the pattern blocks together. Ask children to compare their work with a partner and discuss any differences or similarities. 4 Problem Solving If children answered the checked exercises correctly, assign the exercises on this page. Problems These problems require children to use higher order thinking skills and/or multiple steps to solve. In Exercise 4, children use their knowledge of shapes to determine how they will put two blocks together to make a new shape that has 5 sides/vertices (). Exercise 5 is a non-routine problem that challenges children to display a way of combining blocks to make a shape with 10 sides. Go Deeper Give each child two different pattern blocks. Ask them to find a few different ways to combine the blocks into a new shape, drawing each way and writing the number of sides and vertices of the resulting figure.
