1 December 13, 2018 Family Folder Newsletter Dear PB School Family: Today was a Magnanimous day! We began the day with Mass, on the Feast Day of St. Lucy. St. Lucy is a martyr and the perfect Advent Saint, the name Lucy means light! We then had the opportunity to embrace the presence of the Lord with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Grades 5th-8th received the sacrament of reconciliation (2nd-4th had Reconciliation on Monday). Our Middle school students kicked off our NWEA testing today taking the English Language Arts test. This will be new data for our students. Since we began taking NWEA last Fall, we have only tested math and reading. Next week grades K-8 will take the winter NWEA reading and math test. The NWEA student reports will be sent home with report cards on January 10 th, Next Friday is the last day of the 2 nd quarter. Prek-4 students have been working hard practicing for their Christmas programs. The program is going to be terrific! I am excited for all of our students and families to enjoy the night filled with Christmas Spirit. This weekend, the Candy and Bake sale is going on from 8:00 12:00 in the gym this Sunday. Stop by to shop or eat a pancake breakfast. Santa Clause will also be attending on Sunday morning! Children will have the opportunity to visit with him and take a photo. 2 Hi PB Family! The annual PB Holiday Basketball Tournament is right around the corner. This year the tournament will run from 12/26-12/30. We are in need of MANY volunteers to help make this run smoothly. If you have an athlete in grades 5-8, it is expected that you volunteer a minimum of 1-2 shifts (especially since we don t ask parents to do any sort of sales to raise funds for new uniforms, equipment, etc). Thanks in advance for your help and for setting a good example to your children by donating your time. If you are able, come out and support our PB athletes! Boys first game is 12/26 at 3pm and girls follow at 4:15. Go Reds!

3 Library News In light of the holiday season, the school s library is going to allow grades 3-8 to have books checked out over the break. However, there is one condition. If a book is lost or horribly damaged when school is back in session, the student will have to either replace the book themselves or pay FULL PRICE for the book s replacement. If you feel your child is responsible enough they are more than welcomed to check books out next week. If they are unsure and are afraid they would lose them then it would be best if they turned everything in next week and start fresh in January. This is everyone s library and we want to keep it in good condition for many years to come. Thank you and have a Blessed Christmas! 6 K-4 th Grade and Band Christmas Program The Christmas Program is Thursday, Dec. 20, at 6:30pm. It will feature our band students from 4th-8th grades, the Kindergarteners, and 1st-4th graders performing "Christmas Chronicles." WHAT TO WEAR (and requests for props) Kindergarten--dress clothes (no strapless clothing or open-toe shoes, please; also, dresses and skirts need to be at least knee-length for being on stage) 1st grad are the choir of angels that appear to the shepherds in this year s Christmas program! As such, students may wear an angel costume for the 6:30pm performance (please come already in costume for the evening performance). It can be as simple as a white outfit and gold halo made from a loop of gold garland. You are also welcome to get more elaborate by adding a white gown and wings. If students do not wear an angel costume, whites/yellows/pastel colored dress clothes may be worn (no strapless clothing or open-toe shoes, please; also, dresses and skirts need to be at least knee-length for being on stage). If light-colored dress clothes are not worn, other dress clothes should be worn. Any questions please Miss Rush at music@preciousblood.org.

7 2nd grade dress clothes. If you have a flashlight or battery operated candle, please let your child borrow it for the performance (their featured song is about finding the Light [of Jesus]). You can send flashlights and battery operated candles in on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 20 (please include your name on the device so I can keep track of who it belongs to if you want it back). 3rd grade dress clothes. We still more newspapers. If you have a stack laying around, send them in! 4th grade Many will be in costume and need to wear something that works underneath. Please see specific instructions sent home with the 4 th grade newsletter. Those not needing a costume can wear their Saint costume or come in dress clothes. Report to Mrs. Lohmuller at 6:10pm that night to change into costume. From the Kitchen Beginning January 7 th, 2019, the price of an extra entrée is going up to $1.00 and the price of milk is going up to.50. These price changes are mandated by the state and we apologize for any inconvenience.

8 HYGIENE DRIVE Friday, December 21 st is a spirit wear day. Student Council will be taking donations for St. Mary's Ave Maria House in lieu of our normal $.50. The Ave Maria House is a day shelter for the homeless. They are in need of the following hygiene items: Shampoo, Conditioner, Deodorant, Body Wash, Bar Soap, Toothpaste, and Toothbrushes. Please feel free to bring in as many items as you wish. Of course, if you are unable to make it to the store to purchase these items before Monday, you may always just bring in your usual $.50. Thank you in advance from our Student Council.

10 Job Openings 1. Most Precious Blood school is looking for a PreK teacher assistant. This position is Monday through Friday 7:30-11:30. We have two full-day preschool classrooms. A three-year-old classroom and a four-year-old classroom. The majority of this position is working with the four-year-old classroom. 2. Maternity leave teaching Resource for grades 4-8. Mrs. Spoltman s due date for her little girl is January 31 st. This is a certified teaching position. It is a 50% time position. Mrs. Jessie Bloom will be the long-term substitute for religion class. 11 Homework Help Sheet Stay informed. Talk with your child's teacher. Make sure you know the purpose of homework and what your child's class rules are. Teachers can be reached via phone and . All faculty s are posted at the school s web page ( Check your child s book bag, planner, and homework folder daily. Keep a folder at home for returned/graded work to save in case it is needed at a later date. Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework. Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going. Make sure the materials your child needs, such as paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available. Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance. A dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas and other resources are available online at the following website ( Help your child with time management. Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don't let your child leave homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates. Be positive about homework. Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires. When your child does homework, you do homework. Show your child that the skills they are learning are related to things you do as an adult. If your child is reading, you read too. If your child is doing math, balance your checkbook. When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers. Giving answers means your child will not learn the material. Too much help teaches your child that when the going gets rough, someone will do the work for him. When the teacher asks that you play a role in homework, do it. Cooperate with the teacher. It shows your child that the school and home are a team. Follow the directions given by the teacher. If homework is meant to be done by your child alone, stay away. Too much parent involvement can prevent homework from having some positive effects. Homework is a great way for kids to develop independent, lifelong learning skills. Help your child figure out what is hard homework and what is easy homework. Have your child do the hard work first. This will mean he will be most alert when facing the biggest challenges. Easy material will seem to go fast when fatigue begins to set in. Watch your child for signs of failure and frustration. Let your child take a short break if they are having trouble keeping their mind on an assignment. Reward progress in homework. If your child has been successful in homework completion and is working hard, celebrate that success with a special event (e.g., pizza, a walk, a trip to the park) to reinforce the positive effort.
