OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT 3-1 University Hall Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2J9 Tel: Fax: Thank you, Dean Robinson. Student- Parent Orientation Saturday, September 3, :15 pm 6:15 pm Main Gym Van Vliet Centre I.V. Samarasekera, OC President and Vice-Chancellor Students, Parents: Welcome to the University of Alberta! Thank you so much for coming this afternoon. I know well just how hectic the last few days have probably been. Some of you have packed up and moved into residence many of you have probably already spent some time in the bookstore loading up on text books and all of you have been trying to get to know this campus that will become your home away from home for the next few years. If you re feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment no wonder. But I hope that you re excited too. We are all so glad to see you here and welcome you into the University of Alberta family. This is YOUR university now, and that means something. 1
At the U of A, our aim is to create a learning experience both inside and outside of the classroom that will uplift you as a person that will help you fulfill your potential and prepare you to make the leadership contributions that will uplift your communities. Now that s a tall order but if you are willing to embrace all that this university can offer you and are ready to open yourselves to change, then I believe that something extraordinary can happen. Change. Now there s a word that we hear all the time these days. I don t think I can remember a period of my life when I ve been reminded more often than now just how much the world is changing how fast technology is changing how human communications are changing at breakneck speed how much we need to be ready for change and so on. Young people like you are now told routinely that you ll need to be prepared to change jobs and careers several times before you retire. Flexibility and adaptability will need to be your middle names on job applications of the future. But it seems that no matter how much we are reminded that we must change or be left behind, change can be difficult. Not always, of course.
Every day new products appear on the shelves inciting us to upgrade the things that that we already have that kind of change can be easy to handle, because it seems like it will make our lives easier or at least, more fun. It s change that demands something of you that is much more difficult to manage but ultimately, also much more rewarding. It s that kind of change the U of A has to offer. It is my hope that the next few years at the U of A will challenge you and push you. We re here to help make the most of your university experience but the best will only be possible if you become our partner in learning and discovery. Did you know that the U of A is home to some of Canada s most exceptional teachers? More of our professors have won the country s top teaching award than any other university. And you class of 2015 are among the best students in the country. Take full advantage of the talent that will be in the room every day that you attend class. Ask questions. Really dig into the readings, essay questions, experiments and problems. Work together to create a learning environment that demands something of you and your fellow students. That s what will lead to the discovery of new ideas and new innovations. It s also what will open the door to change in yourselves and in the people around you.
As Phil Morin mentioned, learning and discovery doesn t only happen in the classroom and I urge you to take full advantage of the U of A s exceptional educational resources. Do you know that the U of A library system is the second largest in Canada? Ten million volumes! Not many Canadian students indeed not many students around the world have such ready access to the wealth of materials and information you have. Another one of the great advantages to attending a researchintensive university like the U of A is the fact that you can observe and participate in that research. In our new Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science, for instance, you can wander the glass hallways and see scientists at work using state of the art equipment. In every faculty, undergraduate research scholarships and internships are available to bring you right into the heart of cutting-edge projects. Are you interested in studying or working abroad? We can help. You could find yourself doing a teaching practicum in rural Ghana or field work in Baikal, Siberia or a business program in China. Perhaps you ll do an exchange in Europe or take a course at our Faculty of Arts campus in Cortona, Italy. Closer to home, you might consider taking one of our communityservice learning courses. You get out of the classroom into nonprofit organizations where you can see for yourself how the theories, concepts, and skills you learned in class have an impact on society.
This is just a small taste of how you can stretch yourself at the U of A. In the next four years, you re also going to find out that much of the learning you do will be among friends. Every year, teams of U of A students join together to enter national and international competitions competitions focused on entrepreneurship, robotics, bio-engineering, debating, industrial and fashion design, litigation, and so on. U of A students have also created more than 350 student clubs focused on activities and interests of all kinds. Students, like you, volunteer by the hundreds to ensure the success of U of A s annual International Week. So take some time to have a look at what your fellow students are doing. At Convocation Hall, Horowitz Theatre, or the Timms Centre for the Performing Arts, you can take in the latest in music performance and theatre. Or, drop by the hockey arena or Foote Field to see our Golden Bears and Panda Bears win and win big did you know that U of A athletic teams are the only ones in Canada to have won championships in all eleven team sports? I hope you re getting a sense of just how rich and rewarding the next four years of your life could be if you re willing to take a few risks and jump in. It won t always be easy and I know that many of you are probably feeling enormous pressures right now to succeed.
You might be wondering if you ve chosen the right courses and the right degree that will lead to a good job and secure future. I want to assure you that a U of A degree in any field has a proven track record in terms of future employment. More than 95% of our graduates find full-time employment within two years of graduation. Today, Ken Bautista has given you a sense of how much our U of A alumni are succeeding and contributing and how much they want to help you do the same. Finding rewarding work after graduation is, indeed, important. But, I urge you to go into the next four years with learning and discovery as your primary goal. You might not know today precisely what you want to do with your life. Don t worry you are not alone. Follow your interests and passions and be open to change and you will be prepared for whatever might happen. Just last weekend, the Globe and Mail featured a major story about a U of A alumnus that illustrates what I mean. When Andrew Dawrant entered the U of A he had no idea what he wanted to do for a living. He just knew that he d had a passion for China and Chinese languages since the third grade. So he decided to do a degree in East Asian studies which allowed him to focus on his passion and also pursue learning in a range of subjects.
He didn t know then where he was headed exactly but today he says that his degree was the ideal training ground for the career he later discovered. And what is that? Andrew Dawrant is now considered to be one of the top Chinese-English-language interpreter currently working in China. He is the translator of choice in meetings at the highest level. He translates for China s leaders, for Canadian prime ministers and premiers, for US presidents, and for CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. To do this job well, he doesn t just need to be master of several Chinese languages and dialects he must also be completely briefed on the issues of the day. And, he needs to know all of the economic, social and political issues and nuances that could colour any conversation between leaders. In short, he needs to be learning new material all of the time. If flexibility and adaptability are going to become your second names, then the skills that will matter more than any other will be your ability: to learn new things, to think critically, to bring ideas from many different fields together in new ways, to communicate clearly and
to work comfortably in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural environments. You can learn these skills by taking any degree at the U of A. The truth is, we cannot know what the future holds. When U of A alumna Noreen Flanagan studied nursing, she had no idea that one day she would be the Editor-in-chief of ELLE magazine. When alumni Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk entered med school, they had no idea that one day they would be the founders of Bioware, one of the world s top makers of video games. And I can tell you that when began my engineering degree at Ceylon University in Sri Lanka, I couldn t even begin to imagine that one day I would be standing here today addressing a new class of students as the president of the University of Alberta. Life is full of surprises! Full of changes that are both delightful and difficult. So if you re not sure where you re headed right now, that s perfectly fine. We have the support you ll need to make choices and positive changes. Parents, I hope you are also ready to be flexible! Attending a broad, research-intensive university can provide choices that your children have not yet imagined finding out about them might cause a few changes in the plan.
Students: Learning and discovery inside the classroom and out really does demand something of you. It requires an investment of your commitment and time. It also requires a significant financial investment from you.... and from your parents... and from thousands of people you don t know by name but with whom most of you share a home. I m speaking of the citizens of Alberta, who through the provincial government pay close to 75% of the cost of your education. As generations of U of A graduates before you, I know that you will do your best to repay your families and your other major investors by becoming active and contributing citizens in the future. It is my wish that your years at the University of Alberta will be life-changing in ways you don t expect today. If you are willing to be an active participant in your own learning and discovery if you are willing to be open to change that demands something from you then I promise you that the University of Albert will give you an experience like no other. Thank you again for coming today and my warmest welcome to the U of A and best wishes for your first year! [Pause for applause] And, now I would like to introduce the U of A Mixed Chorus, one of the longest running student clubs on campus, with members from every faculty and school on campus. They re going to lead us in one of the great traditions of the university the U of A cheer song.
