3 ABSTRACT Natural grouping is a sorting techniqute that aims to combine some of the advantages of both qualitative and quantitative research. The respondents are asked to split a set of stimuli into two groups, then split each of these groups again into two groups, and so on, and to give their reasons for splitting.

A typical example is a table of education by income. On the average income increases with education; both variables are linked with 'socio-economic status. In such tables the second factor is a quadratic function of the first. A plot of the first two factors takes the shape of a horseshoe. This effect is extensively treated in Schriever (1985). 5.
