1 TITLE Creative Art Practice Studio 3 SI MODULE CODE CREDITS 80 LEVEL 6 JACS CODE W100 SUBJECT GROUP Fine Art DEPARTMET Art & Design MODULE LEADER Jerome Harrington MODULE STUD HOURS (based on 10 hours per credit)* Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities Placement (if applicable) Independent Guided Study MODULE AIM MODULE DESCRIPTOR Total umber of Study Hours The Creative Art Practice course provides a studio-based environment that recognises and advances the richness and diversity of a range of art practices, including painting, sculpture, illustration, furniture design and other forms of creative expression. Within the course, engagement in focussed discussion in response to studio practice is part of a commitment to examining one's own and other's artistic and cultural experience to develop and articulate a personal creative identity. ou are encouraged to explore debates whose frame of reference embraces the meeting points between fine art and design practices. Students are committed to developing the practical skills and cognitive abilities to produce artefacts for cultural consumption and also to inform and enhance their future career. Our graduates make significant and substantial contributions to the creative and cultural industries, culture, commerce and society. The module develops skills that will support students who wish to pursue careers in public arts, community arts, arts and museums management, curating, teaching and design. The Creative Art Practice course will enable you to consider your creative and vocational ambitions and to explore the range of options available to you in the professional arena. The course provides a stimulating environment within the context of a strong undergraduate community, where your studio practices are challenged and enabled by dialogues with both staff and your peers in seminars, group critiques and individual tutorials as well as collaborative projects in the form of group exhibitions and open studios. MODULE LEARIG OUTCOMES By engaging successfully with this module a student will be able to Make informed decisions about appropriate processes in order to apply a variety of advanced specialist skills and methods, technologies and materials to the production of your work. Respond to self-initiated project briefs and locate inventive solutions to problems through the testing of materials and methods.
2 Consider, articulate and evaluate your own practice using an analysis of your experience by reflecting on the contemporary context within which your work takes place. Develop skills of visual literacy in order to present your work in response to professional opportunities. Establish a research journal that informs your practice by a reasoned response through consideration of your work in response to the views and critical judgement of others. Demonstrate resourcefulness, strong organisational skills and an awareness of the audience for your work in order to realise a public exhibition. Establish an independent practice, set goals and meet deadlines in the realisation of a body of work. IDICATIVE COTET The core teaching activity of this module is the Group Critiques that take place weekly at which a number of students present their work in progress for critique to other students and an academic facilitator. Crits enable you to apply your skills of reasoning and judgement when discussing the work of others and employ the views of others in the development of your own practice. Workshop surgery sessions taught by experts from a range of specialist skill areas such as Photography, Printmaking, Performance, Video or Fabrication provide expert advice and knowledge to deepen your practice. Exhibition practice seminars will lead you through the process of developing and staging an exhibition to professional standards. Individual tutorials deepen and enhance your understanding of your personal practice and suggest areas of further development. LEARIG, TEACHIG AD ASSESSMET - STRATEG AD METHODS Students will be supported in their learning, to achieve the above outcomes, in the following ways ou will attend a regular series of group critiques with a range of staff at which students present their work for peer discussion. Each student will present work at different stages of its making. This encourages a dynamic critique which will actively inform the development of your practice. ou will receive individual tutorial support for your project, alongside practical workshops where appropriate. ou will have space within a group studio and have access to workshops, modes of communication and appropriate technologies. ou will make regular visits to sites, public art works and events, art galleries and museums, both nationally and internationally. ou will be required to research extensively in support of your own practical, creative and academic agenda, across art criticism, arts journalism and related discourses. ou will also use both online and other archives.

The focus of the assessment for this module is the preparation of artwork exhibited in a public exhibition, professional portfolio or alternative form of public output such as a book work or documentation of significant public proposals. Alongside this a body of work that includes documentation, research and supporting material should demonstrate the thorough and considered development of ideas, processes and outcomes throughout the year. generation and effective expression of ideas, concepts and theories in the realisation of your work application of critical self reflection and evaluation of the judgement of others in the process of creation demonstration of advanced skill development, ambition, organisational and time management resourcefulness, organisational skills and advanced awareness of audience in the public exhibition of your art practice A detailed brief will be provided on the module BlackBoard site at the start of the module. Samples of work will demonstrate how the criteria are applied. FEEDBACK Students will receive feedback on their performance in the following ways Throughout the year you will receive verbal feedback via tutorials and group critiques. ou will receive written and verbal feedback at the mid-point review, the Interim Assessment. This assessment is for feedback only and will not contribute to your final grade. This offers the opportunity of a key informal assessment where your practical work, research and documentation are viewed and feedback is given encouraging you to pursue strengths, plan effectively and indicate weaknesses. Following the final presentation of your work, you will receive a grade corresponding to the published marking criteria accompanied by written feedback. LEARIG RESOURCES FOR THIS MODULE (ICLUDIG READIG LISTS) ou will have space within a group studio. Access to workshops including: fabrication, printmaking & photography. ou will have access to a wide range of equipment and appropriate technologies available from the Media Store and in the Mac Labs/Media Suites.
4 REVISIOS Through independent undertaking you will make regular visits to art galleries, museums, art fairs, projects and commissions both nationally and internationally. ou will be required to engage extensively in support of your own creative and intellectual agenda, across art criticism and theory, as well as arts journalism, related discourses and other relevant modes e.g.: film, video, TV, music, fiction etc. ou will also use online resources, libraries and other learning centres and archives.
