Class Web site Moodle: Moodle Login User Name: Lastname_Firstname Password: Student ID (88 ) Course Description This course provides hands on experience using personal computers and the Windows operating system. It includes an overview of Windows and an introduction to Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Prerequisite/Recommended CAOT 32 (Business Communications) and CAOT 92 (Windows) are recommended. Students should have a working knowledge of the Windows operating system. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to: Be more productive by utilizing Windows file management strategies to organize files and folders. Use a variety of formatting techniques in Word to create professional looking business letters, reports and desktop publishing documents. Create visually appealing and informative workbooks in Excel, and use functions and formulas, and create and format charts. Design and create relational databases, and create forms, queries and reports in Access. Plan, create and format PowerPoint presentations using templates, themes, slide layouts and master slides. Student Learning Outcome Use word processing software to prepare an effective business document that is formatted correctly, grammatically correct, and utilize formatting word processing features. 2 Syllabus: CAOT 82 (1520), Spring version 1 Required Textbooks The following textbook bundle is MANDATORY for the course. It includes three textbooks and a MyITLab Student Access Code. MyITLab is REQUIRED for the class, so every student MUST buy their own access code. (The bundle is available at the Valley College Bookstore.) Office 2013) When sold separately: ISBN 10: ISBN 13: Prentice Hall Custom Project Management textbook (not used) Software In order to complete this course you must have access to a computer running Microsoft Office 2013 Professional or Office 365. Other versions of Office (Office 2106, Office 2010, Office 2007, Office 2003, Office 2016 for Mac, Office 2011 for Mac, Office 2008 for Mac) are NOT acceptable. Some versions of Office 2013 do not include Microsoft Access. Be sure to check that your MS Office software also includes Access. 2

3 Syllabus: CAOT 82 (1520), Spring version 1 You will not be excused from any part of an assignment or exam because you are using the wrong version of Office. Office 365 (the subscription version of Office 2013) is available to LACCD students for free. Alternatively, if you choose to purchase Office 2013, it is available at discounted prices for students. Please see the class Web site for more information on both of these options. MyITLab Some of the training and homework assignments in this class will be provided through MyITLab, an online interactive training and assessment program. Developed by the textbook publisher, it is designed to reinforce and clarify the lessons in the book. Every student will need to have access to MyITLab; to get this access, you will need a MyITLab Access Code (see the Textbook Bundle, above). You will also need an internet connection (DSL or cable connection recommended). Hardware Your computer will need to meet certain requirements in order to run MyITLab. For information on getting your computer set up to use MyITLab, please see this link: Data Storage You will need to have a USB drive (1 Gb or larger) to complete some of the exercises and to save your files. You also have storage space available from LAVC on your UIA Network Drive. Please see for more info. Communication Outside of class, the best way to communicate with me is through e mail (see above). Important: you must include "CAOT 82" and your Last name somewhere in the "Subject" area of your message. If not, it is possible that I will not receive it. Grading and Evaluation Criteria Points Percent of Grade Homework 480 points (12 x 40 points each) 48% Quizzes 180 points (12 x 15 points each) 18% Capstone Projects 160 points (4 x 40 points each) 16% Final Exam 100 points 10% Class Participation 80 points 8% Total 1000 points Students are required to take all exams, quizzes and tests. Incompletes will not be issued, except for a documented medical emergency. 3

Consistent progress; meets all course requirements. C 70 79% Average. Meets basic course requirements. D 60 69% Below average; partial fulfillment of requirements; minimal effort and progress. F 59% and below 599 and below Fails to meet minimum course standards. Policies and Procedures Class Sessions All reading assignments should be completed before class. You are responsible for all material covered in lectures, and in class instructional activities. All hands on classwork is required. Computer use during class is limited to class related activities. Any other use (checking your e mail, playing computer games, etc.) is forbidden, and will result in a zero "participation" grade for that class. Homework Each student must complete his/her homework. You may work together, but each student has to complete the assignment separately. Homework is due at the beginning of class. No late homework will be accepted. Points will be deducted from any homework that is improperly submitted. In Class Exercises, Quizzes, Capstone Projects and Exams Students are required to complete all In Class Exercises, Quizzes, Capstone Projects and Exams. No make ups will be given. Drop Policy If you decide to drop the course, it is your responsibility to take care of the necessary details by the appropriate deadline. Please refer to the Spring 2016 Academic Calendar for specific dates: Spring 2016_College_Calendar.aspx. Attendance/Drop Policy Students are expected to attend all class sessions. You are responsible for notifying the instructor, in advance, of any absence or scheduling conflict. You may be dropped from the class if you miss more than two consecutive classes without notifying me. Students who are out for three sessions due to illness need to provide a doctor s note to be reinstated back into the class. Although I retain the right to drop you given the above circumstances, it is nevertheless your responsibility as a student to withdraw from this class if you do not intend to complete it. Students should not expect faculty to initiate withdrawal procedures for them. You can drop a class in person, by telephone, or by internet; please contact the Admissions Office for more information. 4

5 Syllabus: CAOT 82 (1520), Spring version 1 Academic Standards Enrollment in a class may be terminated due to unsatisfactory student conduct, undue disrespect towards an instructor or administrator, or academic dishonesty. Each student is responsible for maintaining standards of academic performance established for each course in which he or she is enrolled. Honest and ethical students are protected in this class. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with The Policy on Academic Dishonesty, which is printed on page 154 of the Spring 2016 General Catalog: Spring Sched 2016_WEB (2).aspx. While studying together is encouraged, each student must complete his or her own In Class Exercises, Homework, Quizzes, Capstone Projects and Exams. Please be extremely careful that you do not engage in any behavior that could be construed as cheating. Violations could result in a failing grade, for the assignment, and referral to the Vice President of Student Services for further disciplinary action. The following actions are considered cheating: Copying another student's homework, or giving a copy of your homework assignment to a classmate. Inappropriate behaviors during a quiz, test or exam: Talking or exchanging information with another student. Looking at or copying from another student's paper or screen. Using a disallowed notes or electronic devices. Leaving the classroom without prior permission. Removing exam materials from the classroom. Falsifying or attempting to falsify attendance records and/or grade rosters. Changing answers on a previously scored test, assignment, or experiment with the intent to defraud. Taking exams and quizzes for someone else or with someone else. Disability Statement If you are a student with a disability requiring classroom accommodations, and have not contacted the Services for Students with Disabilities Office (SSD), do so in a timely manner.
