Course Prerequisites HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: For each of the sections covered in this course, there is a graded homework assignment. You must complete these assignments prior to taking the test which covers the material. In summary, you must complete all homework assignments and quizzes for the sections covered on a test BEFORE you take each proctored test. It will be important that you stay on track with your homework and quizzes so that you do not fall behind before tests. SECTION QUIZZES There will be seven section quizzes spaced throughout the course. You must complete all required quizzes for the sections covered on a test BEFORE you take each proctored test. PROCTORED TESTS n When you have finished all of the sections required for a given test, you should schedule an appointment to take the proctored test using the online scheduler located under myefsc /students applications drop menu / elearning online scheduler) (or your proctor if you live outside of the Brevard County area) and schedule a time to take the test during the designated window for that test. Please be aware that the EFSC Learning Labs are no longer accepting walk-ins for exams. The Labs can fill up fast, particularly during the last few weeks of the semester, so be sure to schedule your test far enough in advance that the time slot you want won't already be taken. There will be a multiple-day window (see course schedule) that you will be given to take each test. No make-ups outside this window will be allowed except in very rare documented emergency situations. (Arrangements may be made to take a test early, if necessary). If an important, prior commitment date conflicts with a test window, then the student may want to make arrangements to take the test early. The term will go by quickly! The schedule translates into a test roughly about every 4 weeks. That can be somewhat of a hectic schedule, but if you budget your time and plan accordingly, then you should still be able to finish without having to rush. It is important that you budget your time and not fall behind. You will not be permitted to use a graphing calculator on any proctored test. On certain tests, you may not be able to use a calculator at all.
HOMEWORK The homework assignments in MyMathLab are extremely important! As stated earlier, you will have a homework assignment for each lesson in the course that you must complete in MyMathLab. I recommend that you keep a notebook with your work so that you have good notes to study for the material. Your work should be organized and clearly labeled with the section number. Use proper mathematical notation when solving homework problems and show your work. One of the secrets to learning math is being neat, organized and using proper mathematical notation. The key to learning mathematics and doing well on tests is to allow the material to "incubate." A three-hour math class normally requires at least 9 hours of study time per week outside of class. Nine hours of studying evenly spaced out over 7 days will produce better results than 9 hours spaced out over 2 days. DO NOT GET BEHIND IN THE COURSE. Course Links support/learning_centers/math_center/student_resources/course_informati on Grading Policy 4 proctored tests (125 points each points total) Graded Homework Assignments (100 points total) Quizzes and Review Quizzes (100 points) Activity in the discussion Board (100 points) Proctored Final exam (comprehensive points) Grade Book: A: B: C: D: F: Below 60 An incomplete (I) grade is an emergency grade assigned under special circumstances for a student who has completed all regular tests (with a C or above) and some emergency prevents you from taking the final exam.
The W grade indicates a withdrawal from the course. The course withdrawal policy at Florida community colleges and universities has recently changed. If you are unfamiliar with these changes, you may want to consult your advisor or the director of admissions. If you stop attending this course, then it is your responsibility to initiate the withdrawal. Your instructor will NOT sign a late withdrawal form unless you can document an extenuating circumstance that would justify a late withdrawal. The request for a late withdrawal in order to avoid an unwanted course grade will be denied. Attendance Policy This course is an online course, designed to help the student master the basic concepts of College Algebra. As such, it is structured differently from a correspondence course, in this course the students may interact both with the instructor and with other students in the class. As a student, you are expected to take part in several kinds of online activity/software instruction each week to show that you are still active in the class. The following is a list of acceptable activities that will be counted toward the weekly requirement of two attendances: You must complete at least two of these each week. Students' attendance are based on the following activities: Make sure to submit the weekly assignments Make sure to take all quizzes and proctored tests within the scheduled dates Make sure to submit the discussion assignments Any student who is not attending/participating in the course regularly may be administratively withdrawn from the course prior to the withdrawal deadline or may receive a grade of "F" after the withdrawal deadline. It is the student's responsibility to complete and return to College Records a withdrawal form prior to the withdrawal deadline if he/she wishes to insure that a grade of "W" is received. Your instructor will NOT sign a late withdrawal form unless you can document an extenuating circumstance that would justify a late withdrawal. The request for a late withdrawal in order to avoid an unwanted course grade will be denied. Course participation is considered very important. A student must do his/her own work; there are no exceptions.
e-learning ATTENDANCE POLICY: The e-learning Department at Brevard Community College has a very strict attendance policy that must be adhered to by all online students. 3-Day Initial Attendance Policy: You must complete one or more required Initial Attendance activities within your online course within the first 3 days of the semester. Be sure to check with your instructor as to what your 3-Day Initial Attendance activities that are required. Failure to complete the required 3-Day Initial Attendance Activity by the third day of the semester will result in your instructor reporting you as Never Attending and the college will withdraw you from the course. You will not be reinstated. Regular Attendance Policy: You must maintain acceptable attendance in your online course. Just logging into your online course does not constitute attendance. You must complete a required activity. Failing to complete two-consecutive weeks of required work in your course will result in your instructor reporting you as Stopped Attending and the college will withdraw you for nonattendance (W7) from the course. You will not be reinstated. If for any reason you believe you will miss any assignment in your course, you must obtain prior approval from your instructor. Do not assume that you can ask for forgiveness or an extension after the fact. Documentation may be required by your instructor. Dropped for Non-Payment (DN): If the college drops you from your online course due to non-payment of fees, you will not be reinstated into your online course. It is your responsibility to make sure all of your fees are paid on time. Exam Policy All Tests are proctored tests and must be taken in a proctored environment. If you reside outside of Brevard County and cannot use EFSC's Learning Labs to take your tests, it is your responsibility to find a suitable proctor. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL FEES INCURRED FOR TESTING SERVICES. Suitable proctors include College testing labs and
public libraries. The instructor's decision about the suitability of proctors is final. Please ensure that you submit your proctoring information to your instructor well before the scheduled exam date. Academic Integrity Student Code Of Conduct (Student Handbook): Academic Dishonesty: o o o Cheating, plagiarism and any other misrepresentation of work are prohibited. Students who are found to be in violation of this standard may receive severe sanctions including a failing grade in their respective course. And depending on the circumstances, possible expulsion from Eastern Florida State College. Disability Policy If you are a student with a disability and/or special needs who require OSD accommodations, please contact me during the first week of class with a brief discussion of your accommodations. It is an OSD student's responsibility to discuss with the instructor any accommodations to be arranged.
