1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Head of Learning and Standards - Farnham Campus Grade: Management Scale Point 46 Responsible to: Hours per week: Responsible for: Associate Principal - Farnham Campus A minimum of 36 hours per week to meet the requirements of the post Farnham Campus curriculum staff including Teachers/Tutors, Technicians, Associate Tutors, Curriculum Area Leaders Main Purpose of the Role 1. To manage the delivery of education and training to students at the college within the relevant subject areas. 2. To effectively lead and manage teaching and teaching support staff within a curriculum area through clear, strong and supportive management and communication. 3. To be responsible and accountable for managing improvements in teaching and related curriculum activities to maximise effective learning for all students by maximising each student s personal attainment and achievement. 4. To be responsible for and accountable for prioritising those curriculum and related activities that have an explicit and measurable impact in achieving effective learning for individual learners within a curriculum area. For example curriculum and related areas to be managed include: Curriculum design and implementation Teaching, learning and assessment Schools liaison and recruitment activities (in conjunction with Marketing and Schools Liaison teams) IAG including interview processes Enrolment and induction (in conjunction with Curriculum Area Leaders) Tutorial design and delivery Pastoral support, including chairing weekly STAAR meetings Quality processes Staff management and recruitment 5. To be a member of the Faculty Management Team reporting directly to the Associate Principal and to represent the Associate Principal as appropriate. 6. To ensure that all courses in the curriculum area return achievement rates that are significantly above the national benchmark. 7. To be a Designated Safeguarding Officer at Farnham Campus

2 Principal Accountabilities Quality Management and Improvement 1. Ensuring that student performance measurably increases as measured by retention rates, pass rates, achievement rates and value added. 2. Ensuring that course targets for the maintenance or improvement of standards reflect College and sector-wide benchmarks for recruitment, retention, pass rates, achievement and value added. 3. Ensuring that teaching, learning and assessment strategies and other curriculum activities (e.g. tutorials) respond to individual learning needs, promote independent lifelong learning and are designed to maximise individual learning and success. 4. Managing the curriculum to ensure that each course is organised and delivered to maximise individual learning and success and meet the requirements of the awarding bodies. 5. Ensuring that the curriculum is supported and underpinned with effective schemes of work, assignment planners and lesson planning. 6. Integrating all elements of the learning process (e.g. main course, programme of study, Functional Skills, Additional Learner Support, and tutorial) into all individuals courses to personalise learning and maximise success. 7. Ensuring that student assessment records are kept and that compliance is achieved with regard to tracking and monitoring of student performance and supporting students to improve. 8. Ensuring that there is robust internal verification and recording and reporting of internally-awarded marks in place that conforms with College policy and complies with the requirements of external awarding bodies. 9. Integrating quality improvement activities to ensure achievement rates that are significantly above the national benchmark. 10. Promoting the use of contemporary teaching, learning and assessment methods, including e-learning, that ensure quality and efficiency of curriculum delivery. 11. Carrying out lesson observations and participating in other measures related to quality improvement in teaching, learning and assessment. 12. Writing a Self-Assessment Report (SAR) and producing a Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) for the area of responsibility based on a critical reading, evaluation and moderation of termly programme reviews; monitoring the progress of individual courses against action plans on an on-going basis and assessing the impact of the QIP. Audit and Inspection 13. Playing a key role in external inspection, internal and external audit and ensuring that staff members within the area of responsibility are aware of any requirements to support those activities.

3 Staff Management 14. Managing and developing staff within the curriculum area to ensure optimum performance for the College, in the areas of performance management, absence management. Personal and professional development and health, safety and wellbeing. 15. Line managing Curriculum Area Leaders (CALs) and a proportion of the college s curriculum delivery staff (shared with CALs) 16. Leading and implementing, with the Associate Principal, the College s performance management scheme for all staff. 17. Implementing the College Quality Improvement Strategy related to teaching, learning and assessment including monitoring and evaluation, the interventions required as a result of course consultative meetings and taking swift and corrective action relating to student performance. 18. Effective performance management and development of staff within the curriculum area to ensure optimum performance for the College. Financial Management 19. To be a cost centre manager with responsibility for the appropriate budgets within the area of responsibility. Curriculum Planning and Operational Implementation 20. Keeping up to date with curriculum developments and to participate in the ongoing review and design of the curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of learners and meets the College aims and objectives and policies and procedures. 21. Ensuring that course entry requirements are kept under review and are appropriate, clear and comparable across subject sector areas. 22. Supporting and facilitating the timetabling process, including rooming and staff deployment, and liaising with relevant staff members at all levels of the organisation. Student Management and Guidance 23. Ensuring individual students access and receive all relevant College services (e.g. enrichment, counselling, finance) to meet their individual needs to maximise their learning and success. 24. Ensuring that all students are supported through the implementation of appropriate processes including: Participating in the preparation of marketing materials including the prospectus Managing campus approaches to schools liaison Interviewing, recruitment and enrolment of students Initial assessment of students Ongoing monitoring and review of progress and achievement Implementation of effective tutorial / pastoral support Induction for students Monitoring of attendance and punctuality Student behaviour and discipline, including participating in the Duty Principal rota

4 Teaching Undertaking a teaching timetable up to 4.5 hours per week in own area of specialism. General Accountabilities 1. Lead, promote and support the development of the College s Equality and Diversity policies, procedures and practices as they relate to students and staff. 2. Develop effective contact, liaison and working relationships with colleagues in the College and other bodies as appropriate. 3. Support the development of the learning organisation and facilitate cultural change. 4. To engage in professional development and networking to ensure that professional and strategic contributions are up-to-date. 5. Complying with the College Health and Safety Policy and all relevant health and safety requirements. 6. Participating actively in the performance management scheme, agreeing objectives, attending reviews and undertaking professional development as required. 7. All employees are expected to be fully committed to all policies and processes including equality, diversity and safeguarding. 8. Such other duties as may be reasonably expected of the post holder. 9. This list is not exhaustive and is only an indication of responsibilities. Training Identified for the Post 1. Where appropriate to the post, undertake professional updating for a minimum of three days work experience per year in a relevant placement to keep abreast of industrial developments and requirements 2. Undertake 60 hours per year professional development activity (pro rata for part time staff, with a minimum of 6 hours) 3. GDPR training 4. Induction training 5. Equality and Diversity training 6. Safeguarding training including a three yearly update 7. Health and Safety training 8. Prevent training including a three yearly update 9. Keeping updated with developments in the appropriate curriculum area 10. Keeping updated with sector developments as they affect the management of the specific curriculum area 11. Appropriate teaching qualification at Level 4 or above 12. Management and leadership training and development Please note The person appointed to this post will, from time to time, have contact with students, many of whom are under eighteen year of age, and some under sixteen years, a number of whom may

5 have moderate to severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities. As such, the post holder will be required to have an Enhanced DBS check along with other mandatory checks. As the College is a multi-campus site, flexibility and willingness to work across sites will be required. This job description reflects the requirements of the post at May 2018 but may be amended from time to time following consultation with the post holder. PERSONAL SPECIFICATION: Head of Learning and Standards - Farnham Campus Experience Essential Experience as a teacher for students aged 16 to 18. Significant experience as a Programme Manager or Curriculum Team Leader. Appropriate industrial experience. Experience of successfully planning, managing and monitoring management information. Proven track record of successful programme management and development of quality, equality and empowerment of employees. Desirable Significant teaching experience in a Sixth Form College. Experience of curriculum design and management Qualifications A professional qualification at Level 4 or above. A recognised teaching qualification at Level 5 or above. A professional qualification at Level 5 or above. Knowledge Extensive knowledge in own professional area.

6 Thorough knowledge and understanding of educational concepts, current National thinking about teaching and learning initiatives and application relevant to the job role. Understanding of the political and socioeconomic environment in which the curriculum operates. A clear vision for the promotion and development of teaching and learning. An understanding of quality improvement and quality controls, funding mechanisms and the range of available curriculum products. Skills Ability to deliver innovative and inspirational teaching. Well-developed IT skills and familiarity with Office packages. Ability to develop alternative methods of teaching delivery using elearning techniques. Proven ability to prepare and present management reports using data on student progress and achievement. Ability to effectively plan, manage and monitor information systems and take proactive action to avoid crisis management. Commitment to champion best practice in respect of equality of opportunity. A proven track record of effective oral and written communication skills. Personal Qualities Articulate and able to communicate professionally with colleagues at all levels, both internally and externally. Ability to work as part of a team and support colleagues. Ability to cope with a demanding workload. Prepared to take and implement decisions and accept responsibility for own actions. Self-motivated. Ability to work effectively as a member of the Management Team and establish credible

Ability to generate confidence, respect and trust from the employees, the Executive Team and external contacts. Ability to take overall responsibility for a curriculum area within an FE environment. Ability to empower and motivate people at all levels, including effective team building and relationships which are not dependent on traditional hierarchical structures. Ability to think and act to create and develop innovative solutions. Proven record of effective professional and personal learning. Commitment to and ability to contribute and add value to the College Vision, priorities and commitments. Other Ability and willingness to travel between sites and elsewhere on a regular basis. Ability to work flexibly (some evening duty is required) to meet the needs of the College.
