It will cover topics such as: developing an effective and personal voice, avoiding overwriting and underwriting, choosing effective and fresh words, avoiding clichés, choosing and foregrounding clear subjects and lively verbs, naming definite actors and actions, making sentences connect, assigning emphasis, controlling rhythm, achieving grammatical variety, and applying rules of thumb. You will have numerous opportunities to analyze the work of professional writers, analyze your own writing style, adapt writing for multiple situations and audiences, and develop a personal style of writing. Required book A book order has been placed with the campus bookstore. You can buy the book from the bookstore or from a reliable online bookseller. Just make sure you have a copy of the book by the first day of class. Glaser, Joe Understanding Style: Practical Ways to Improve Your Writing. 3rd edition. Oxford University Press. Make sure you buy the third edition, published in ISBN- 13: Every week, we will also read short articles or editorials written by professional writers that are intended to illustrate one or more points about effective writing style. Links to these short writing samples will be included in the course notes posted to Blackboard. Course Platforms: Lync, Blackboard, and Google docs We will meet as an entire class every Monday on Lync from 6:00-8:50 pm central time starting August 29th. Install Lync for free if you don t have it. It s also called Skype for Business because it s fully integrated with the TTU eraider system. Fire up Lync at least a few minutes before 6 pm and be ready for an audio call from the professor promptly at 6 pm central. Your attendance and participation will be vital to the success of the course. Have your book with you and be ready to discuss the readings and cover the items on the night s agenda (posted to Blackboard). If you don t have Lync (Skype for Business), download Lync from the Make sure you log in to Lync using your eraider credentials. I will be calling the class using your TTU address. Prior to the first night of class, test your microphone and speakers to make sure everything is working. You will need to have access to a computer with working speakers and microphone to take the course. 1

2 You will most likely need a broadband internet connection (DSL, cable, etc.). In my experience, dial-up connections and most hotel wireless networks are too slow to support audio conferences. If you get dropped from the Lync call during class, use the link provided in the course notes and posted to Blackboard to re-join the call. In the future, watch your TTU for a link to join the Lync conference call on your own prior to our 6 pm start time. The course syllabus and the night s Lync agenda will be posted to Blackboard. You will also upload your completed assignments to Blackboard to be graded: If you do not see the course listed in Blackboard after you log in, ask the professor to add you. We will collaborate together on various exercises and activities using Google docs. This platform is ideal for real-time collaboration. I ve created a folder in Google Drive called ENGL3366-Style- Fall2016. I have sent an invitation via TTU to each of you to join this directory. You should have editing privileges, which will allow you to make changes to documents and add new documents to the directory. More information on how to use the Google docs class site will be provided in class. If you don t have a Google Drive account for your TTU address, please create one: Course notes & homework The course notes will be posted to Blackboard every class day before 6 pm. The course notes are very important. Detailed directions on completing each assignment will be included in the course notes. Detailed directions on completing the weekly homework exercises will be included in the course notes as well. Grading Your final course grade will be calculated according to the table below, using the standard curve of % = A; % = B; % = C; % = D; % = F. Under no circumstances will grades be rounded up or down. ASSIGNMENT VALUE Weekly homework exercises 15 Style and professional artifacts (see below) Analyze their style 15 Reflect on your style & revise 20 Recast/Popularize a technical topic 20 Showcase your style: An essay & reflection 25 Lync participation/attendance 5 TOTAL 100% Assignments A short summary of each assignment follows. For full directions, see the course notes posted to Blackboard. 2

3 Weekly homework exercises (15). Our textbook is full of exercises designed to help you work through problems and topics in the chapters. Each week, you will be assigned a small number of the exercises in the book to complete along with the reading assignment. The course notes (posted to Blackboard) will list the specific exercises you will need to complete. Professional and style artifacts (required to complete assignments). In order to complete some of the homework exercises and one of the major assignments, you will need 1) an article written by a professional writer. You can find examples of professional writing online at sources like Slate.com, RollingStone.com, etc. See me if you have questions. You will also need 2) a sample of your own writing. Choose an essay that you wrote for another college class. The essay should be at least 500 words. Feel free to discuss with me if you have questions about choosing an essay that you ve written. Analyze their writing style (15). Take an example of professional writing written by a journalist or critic, such as an essay, editorial, or article from a popular website like Slate.com, and analyze it using the strategies and suggestions in our textbook. The length of your analysis should be 1250 words. Your analysis will be written for a popular audience who is interested in the same style topics that are covered in our textbook. Genre: Your analysis will take the form of an open letter to the author. Reflect on your own writing style & revise (20). Analyze your own writing style. For this assignment, you will analyze your own style of writing using the style artifact you submitted to the professor. For Part 1 of the assignment, you will analyze your style using the guidelines for effective style in our textbook, and then offer a set of recommendations addressed to your future self. Genre: Part 1 will take the form of a report with a clear set of recommendations you can use in future writing situations. The length of your analysis in Part 1 will be about 1000 words. In Part 2 of this assignment you will significantly revise the first words of your original essay you analyzed in Part 1. Recast/popularize a technical topic (20). You will take a technical or scientific topic and explain it for three different audiences. You will choose your three audiences but they must be different enough to provide different stylistic opportunities and challenges. One piece might be written for young children. Another might be a news-style report for a general audience. A third audience might be experts on the topic. Each recast will be approximately 500 words for a total of 1500 words. Genres: Each explanation will be written in a style that is appropriate for that audience. Showcase your style (25). Write an essay on style and reflect on your style. You will write an essay on style. The essay will answer a significant question on style. See the course notes for sample questions. The audience will be other college students who are highly motivated to learn some advanced writing techniques and tips. The length of your essay (Part 1) will be 1250 words. Part 2 of this assignment will be a reflection of about 500 words in which you discuss the stylistic choices you made and how they fit the guidelines in the textbook. Your essay (Part 1) will require some outside research on the style topic you ve chosen. You must cite sources. You will also present your showcase assignment to the class on the final night. Genre: A lively and accessible article addressed to other college students who are searching for tips on good writing. Lync participation and attendance (5). You will be expected to participate in class during our Lync class sessions. Be ready for class by doing the assigned reading and weekly 3

4 exercises. Expect to be called on during class. At the minimum, expect to participate with your voice at least twice during each Lync session and be engaged with the various activities, discussions, and exercises. Tip: If you are worried about your performance in this class, or don t feel like a particularly good writer, focus on the easy points first: attend every class meeting and participate often. These five participation points could be the difference between one letter grade and a higher one at the end of the semester. Expected learning outcomes Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: Recognize the variety and characteristics of good and bad writing styles Analyze your own and others writing and offer recommendations using the principles of good writing style Adapt your writing style for different aims and audiences Revise efficiently and appropriately Articulate reasons for revisions in your writing. Methods for assessing the expected learning outcomes The expected learning outcomes of the course will be assessed through: Reading assignments; in-class discussions; collaborative exercises using Google docs; weekly writing exercises that provide numerous opportunities for students to work through important concepts in the readings; a written analysis of students own writing style; a written analysis of the writing style of a professional writer; a recast/popularization assignment in which a piece of prose is adapted for multiple audiences; a final writing assignment in which you produce an essay on a style topic and then reflect on that style in a companion piece. Standard course policies Be prepared for class by doing the assigned reading and writing in advance. Bring the assigned readings with you to Lync class each week. Submit all required assignments to be eligible for a passing grade. Contact me immediately if you have a question about or problem using Lync, the course websites, or any course materials. Attendance policies o Be on time for class. Log in to Lync using your eraider (TTU) credentials at least a couple minutes before 6 pm central on class days. o Expect to attend every class meeting. Your performance in the course, as well as the overall success of the course, depend upon your regular attendance. o Attendance policy: I expect you to attend every Lync session. We are only meeting once a week this semester and our Lync sessions will be an important component in your success in the course. For students who are absent three or more Lync class sessions, 5% will be subtracted from your final course grade. Five or more absences will warrant a failing grade in the course. I do not excuse absences. ADA statement: Any student who, because of a disability, may require special arrangements in order to meet the course requirements should contact the instructor within the first two 4

5 weeks of class to make any necessary arrangements. Students should present appropriate verification from Student Disability Services during the instructor s office hours. Please note instructors are not allowed to provide classroom accommodations to a student until appropriate verification from Student Disability Services has been provided. For additional information, you may contact the Student Disability Services office in 335 West Hall or Participation policy: Expect to participate actively in class discussions. The success of the course depends upon your active engagement with in-class activities. These activities are designed to prepare you to complete the major assignments in the class. To receive full credit for participation, participate with your voice at least two times each Lync session, and strive to be fully engaged with the activities, discussions, and exercises you are asked to do. Civility and professionalism o Respect the views of others. o Maintain and promote a civil and respectful environment i.e. an environment conducive to learning. Academic Integrity/Plagiarism statement o Do not plagiarize. Your work must be your own. If you borrow words or ideas from another person, you need to make it explicit (through proper citation) that the words/ideas in question are not your own. If you use someone else s paper or work as your own, you are in violation of the University s policy on academic integrity. Please keep in mind that the penalty for plagiarism can be severe. See me immediately if you have questions about the University s policy on plagiarism. o All work submitted for this class must be your original, new work not submitted for any other class. Late policy: Submit your work on time. Late work is penalized 10% per day. Assignments more than five days late will not be accepted. Submission requirements: Submit your assignments using Blackboard. Lync agenda: Each day before class, the Lync agenda will be posted to Blackboard. Review the agenda closely for directions and suggestions for successfully completing the assignments.
