1 Introduction Our Offer allows all students to be successful. This is confirmed, year after year, as Oxclose Community School is acknowledged as having some of the best GCSE results in the North-East, as well as one of Sunderland City s highest rates of Further Education uptake. We offer a broad, balanced curriculum that prepares all of our students for whatever their progression route may be. Students leave Oxclose Community School with an appreciation of education and training as a life-long valuable process which improves the quality of life enormously. Students are very positive about the help they receive in making informed choices, for example, in choosing their subject options at the end of Year 9. Older students value the help they received in planning the next steps of their education, training or employment. OFSTEDvgggggfg All students follow a CORE curriculum that is the basis of a well balanced examination profile. They then tailor it to their own individual choice through a range of exciting progress routes. We pride ourselves in offering a wide range of options so that each student can find an appropriate route to success. It is vital that you and your child have the opportunity and the time to consider which qualifications and route that is appropriate for your child. This process is designed to make sure each individual makes the right choices for them. The following booklet will guide you through the choices available to your child. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions. The booklet you have been provided with contains the subject choices we think, offer you the most appropriate progress route for you to gain future success.
2 What to do... All students will study the following core subjects: Core Subjects English Language English Literature Mathematics Science & Additional Science ICT Citizenship PE In Option Block A all students will study GCSE French. In order to complete your KS4 Subject Choices form you must choose: ONE subject from Option Block B ONE subject from Option Block C ONE subject from Option Block D (The subjects are listed on the KS4 Subject Choices form) If the combinations do not work for you, please contact Mrs Hill or Mr Haw as soon as possible on You must return your KS4 Subject Choices Form to the Main Reception on or before THURSDAY 29 TH MARCH 2012
3 Core Subjects Citizenship This GCSE course allows students to be more aware of the world around them and their rights as citizens. This course encourages students to take an active interest in the decisions of World, National, and Community Leaders. Students have the opportunity to work as part of a team and will also engage in independent study. English Language/Literature English is a core subject and all students study it. In English, some students work towards two GCSEs: English Language and English Literature, and some towards one GCSE: English. For some students the option of Study Plus is offered, giving them extra support in the key areas of Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening that are crucial for success across the whole curriculum. Information & Communication Technology All students in Year 9 commence a GCSE course in Information & Communication Technology that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum at Key Stage 4. By the end of Year 9, students on the GCSE ICT course should have completed course theory and a module of GCSE ICT coursework. Students will go on to complete a further module of coursework by the end of Year 11 and sit a final written examination to be awarded the equivalent of 1 full GCSE in ICT. I have found it fun. It is also nice because I m doing the lessons that I really enjoy.
4 Core Subjects Mathematics All students will follow the Edexcel Linear course and will be examined at the end of Year 11, although there is the option of early entry. There are two tiers: Foundation Grades G-C Higher Grades D to A* Physical Education PE is compulsory for every student In Year 10 and Year 11. They receive two lessons per week and these two hours are blocked together. The programme aims to develop a range of practical and social skills as well as encourage students to be more aware of health related activities as they contemplate an active lifestyle. Some students may study BTEC Certificate PE, this will be discussed with teachers on an individual basis. Science & Additional Science The new suite of GCSE Science courses and qualifications started in September These courses place more emphasis on How Science Works, which means not just learning theory but understanding the practical side of science and its relation to the world in which we live. Most students follow Core Science in Year 10 followed by Additional Science in Year 11 although some students may be advised to study Triple Science. For more details see Mr Quinn. I enjoy having more freedom and respect by members of staff. I feel you are encouraged to be independent when managing your time and work.
5 Option Block A French The aim of the Modern Foreign Language course is to prepare students for the use of French in their future lives. This could be in the world of work, university entry or purely as communication whilst living or holidaying abroad. The emphasis of the course is communication, enabling students to leave school able to speak, read and write in an other language. This in itself will highlight their cultural awareness. Students will develop skills such as teamwork, public speaking, working to deadlines and creativity to future employers. The best thing about being in Year 10 is that I m doing the lessons that I like and learning new things.
6 Option Block B Geography This course gives the opportunity to explore current geographical issues that are relevant to students lives. Within the course there is a choice of routes and there is opportunity to present assessment pieces in creative and original ways allowing students to work to their strengths. Students are encouraged to develop independent study skills and to think as geographers to understand their planet. History This EDEXCEL course allows students to complete four equally weighted units over their period of study with 3 written exams and a Controlled Assessment in Year 11 EDEXCEL History A - The Making of the Modern World Students will gain a detailed insight into how our world today has been shaped through a study of manageable sections. The topics start from looking at the role of the Suffragettes in helping women gain the right to vote in Britain to the impact of the American involvement in Vietnam. To have lessons I enjoy and that I am interested in, this way I can enjoy my lessons while learning skills I may need.
7 Option Block C Art & Design Students will be expected to develop their creative, imaginative and practical skills within the area of Art and Design through their response to set design briefs. Students will experiment and explore a wide range of media and this could include, paint and pencil, clay, digital imaging, 3-Dimensional material and photography. Students will develop their drawing skills and will be required to take an independent and enquiring approach towards research and development of their design ideas. Students will be required to complete sketch book support work and complete at least 2 final outcomes which could be a painting/drawing, a piece of digital work or a sculpture. Students will be required to study the work of other artists and take inspiration from the world around them in order to fully develop their own original ideas. Business Studies GCSE qualifications in business subjects enable students to actively engage in the study of business and economics to develop as effective and independent students and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds; use an enquiring, critical approach to distinguish facts and opinions, to build arguments and make informed judgements; develop and apply their knowledge, understanding and skills to contemporary issues in a range of local, national and global contexts; appreciate the range of perspectives of different stakeholders in relation to business and economic activities. Computing All students in Year 9 commence a GCSE-equivalent course in Information & Communication Technology that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum at Key Stage 4. Students wishing to develop their skills and knowledge further and learn about ICT and computing in more depth should consider the computing option. This course offers students the opportunity to learn about Creative ICT this includes multimedia, website creation, digital imaging, digital video, digital sound, animation, mobile APPS creation. This computing course also includes Technical Computing which involves learning about computer programming / computer hardware and software / computer networks / computer control. This computing course utilises specialist computer software used in real organisations and industry with work-based scenarios to set the scene. I find it hard but interesting because it s a challenge and it s a bit harder than Year 9.
8 Option Block C Dance The GCSE Dance course is designed to give students training in all areas of Dance. Students will develop their dance technique, skills in choreography, performance ability and dance analysis. Expectations are high and students are required to conduct themselves in a professional manner in preparation for a career in this area. Design Engineering Drama This single award GCSE course will require students to produce a detailed case study of an engineered product considering the impact of modern technologies, production details, engineering processes and design solutions. Secondly students will be required to produce an engineered product from a choice of briefs set by the exam board. This will involve analysing client design briefs, developing design solutions, engineering an actual product and evaluating the completed product. A Written examination based on engineering processes also forms part of this GCSE award. The Edexcel GCSE Drama course offers pupils the chance to explore dramatic theory and theatre in performance. Pupils will work creatively and collaboratively to develop their understanding of Scripted Texts and their writers and also devising as an exploratory tool. Food Technology This course provide students with the opportunities to investigate, design, make and evaluate a variety of topics within Food Technology. There is a strong practical element to this course, as it is used to support the theory taught during lessons. A range of topics are covered which include nutrition, special dietary needs and industrial applications. Geography This course gives the opportunity to explore current geographical issues that are relevant to students lives. Within the course there is a choice of routes and there is opportunity to present assessment pieces in creative and original ways allowing students to work to their strengths. Students are encouraged to develop independent study skills and to think as geographers to understand their planet.
9 Option Block C History This EDEXCEL course allows students to complete four equally weighted units over their period of study with 3 written exams and a Controlled Assessment in Year 11 EDEXCEL History A - The Making of the Modern World This course allows pupils to gain a detailed insight into how our world today has been shaped through a study of manageable sections. The topics start from looking at the role of the Suffragettes in helping women gain the right to vote in Britain to the impact of the American involvement in Vietnam. Music Music has been designed to enable students to enjoy and appreciate the benefits of being involved in performing music, creating music and understanding the theory and historical development of the subject. The course is suited to any student who has had instrumental and/or vocal tuition and who wishes to develop their techniques and musical knowledge further. PE & Sport Our GCSE Physical Education option meets the requirements of the National Criteria and is targeted at the full range of GCSE grades. You will be expected to attend extra curricular sport on a regular basis. If you want to achieve the high grades you will have to commit to a healthy active lifestyle. I think that Year 10 is better than any other year because it is lessons I chose and it is more challenging than other years.
10 Option Block D Art & Design Students will be expected to develop their creative, imaginative and practical skills within the area of Art and Design through their response to set design briefs. Design Engineering This single award GCSE course will require students to produce a detailed case study of an engineered product considering the impact of modern technologies, production details, engineering processes and design solutions. Secondly students will be required to produce an engineered product from a choice of briefs set by the exam board. This will involve analysing client design briefs, developing design solutions, engineering an actual product and evaluating the completed product. A Written examination based on engineering processes also forms part of this GCSE award. Fashion & Textile Design Students will be expected to develop their creative imaginative and practical skills within the area of fashion and textiles. This will involve working in areas such as fashion clothing, theatrical costume, and designing fashionable products. Practical elements will include the study of printed and dyed fabrics, making skills and Decorative textile techniques by hand and machine. Students will be expected to investigate and work in a range of textile materials and processes to produce a range of high quality, creative and original outcomes. They will study the work of other artists and fashion designers in relation to their own work. Students will also have the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of design and market influences and manufacturing processes linked to the fashion and textiles industry in the modern world. I enjoy the options I have chosen. Also starting to explore the kind of things I can do in the future.
11 Option Block D Food Technology This course provide students with the opportunities to investigate, design, make and evaluate a variety of topics within Food Technology. There is a strong practical element to this course, as it is used to support the theory taught during lessons. A range of topics are covered which include nutrition, special dietary needs and industrial applications. Graphic Communication Product Design 3D Students will be expected to develop their creative, imaginative and practical skills within the area of graphical design through their response to set design briefs. This could include packaging design, design for print, digital photography, video and web design. Students will become familiar using digital cameras, flat bed scanners and graphic tablets which are all the tools of today s graphic designer. Students will also be expected to investigate and experiment in a range of other media and processes and study the work of other designers in relation to their own work. Students will develop their designing and making skills so that they will be capable of creating totally new products to meet the needs and wants of specific groups of consumers. This base of knowledge will be developed through explorations into a variety of materials including paper and card, natural timbers, man-made boards and plastics. Students will develop a working knowledge of different manufacturing processes and techniques through a series of planned activities, including the use of computer aided design and computer aided manufacture. Product design blends a range of disciplines allowing students demonstrate Graphics Design skills as well as more traditional Resistant Material techniques if they so choose. Triple Science - Biology, Chemistry & Physics The new suite of GCSE Science courses and qualifications started in September These courses place more emphasis on How Science Works, which means not just learning theory but understanding the practical side of science and its relation to the world in which we live. These GCSE s are sometimes known as Triple Science. For more details see Mr Quinn. A new level of maturity and responsibility.
